searcy arkansas: Bragging about an ex-student, now a competitor.....and his listing of historic hotel in Letona Arkansas. - 12/14/12 05:13 AM
When I taught Art at Searcy High I had several students who have now wound up as competitors of mine in this real estate business.
One of my favorites was David Lorton.  He actually got himself an art degree and then switched to business, worked all over the country with Wal-Mart and other businesses and has now become a very good real estate agent.
His newest listing belongs on this blog.  He has listed the old hotel at Letona!  And he put the old picture of it in with his current pictures!  NOW, that is an artist for you!  He appreciates … (12 comments)

searcy arkansas: Mental exercise for the Searcy Sleuths. Another old Searcy site goes down. - 12/13/11 01:29 PM
Believe it or not, today I received a call from a business associate and he called to give me a blog topic.
I asked what it was and he said __________________ was being torn down as we spoke.
Now I could fill in that blank but that would not make the minds of the Sleuths work.  I hustled over and took a snapshot of the demise of this building and thought I'd put it out and see if any of you recognize the remains.
Here's the very artistically arranged photograph.  Guess we need the Googleman to show us how it used … (31 comments)

searcy arkansas: A street in Kensett Arkansas, small town near Searcy Arkansas. Front Street. - 11/25/11 03:23 AM

Front Street, Kensett Arkansas, probably no longer exists. I searched a map of Kensett, which is a small town of approximately 1900 people just a minute away from Searcy Arkansas, and found no Front Street on the map.
I suspect, however, that it was the main drag at some time in the past.  I found this picture somewhere and saved it on my computer.  Perhaps the Seary Sleuths can tell us more about the photo.
Interesting to me is that it looks so much like a town out of a Western movie and is that man on the porch one-legged?  … (13 comments)

searcy arkansas: Cresting. I found some more of that stuff right here in White County Arkansas. - 10/19/11 02:38 PM
Reviewing some delightful pictures that I took last year of our famous "oldest documented church in Arkansas" I found another example of what I had never heard of until a few days ago when I put up a blog about a house in West Point Arkansas that was built in 1883 and had this stuff on the top of the roof which was defined by a reader as cresting.
This oldest church is called Smyrna Church and is located just before Center Hill on Highway 36 West.   Suzy Ribeiro defined the trim on roofs in a comment.
The spindly metal trim on rooftops … (3 comments)

searcy arkansas: Another chomp and another chunk of Searcy AR is gone. Where is this one, folks? - 06/15/11 09:29 AM
You like guessing games?  Yes, Searcy Sleuths who live elsewhere like to figure out where the things "used to be" in Searcy Arkansas.
While driving by today, I came upon this ugly, vicious machine tearing down another structure.  The ones who have to tear the building down don't look upon it as a vicious machine, however.  They consider it a work-saver, and it is.
I anticipated this building coming down so I took pictures of "before."  However, because you need something to challenge you, tell me where it is from this one.  Then I'll post the before ones.

searcy arkansas: VIPs from Searcy Arkansas in the 50's. Who are they? Searcy Sleuth's puzzle. - 04/03/11 01:59 PM
Searcy Arkansas in the 50's was evidently a fun place to live.  Looking back through an old annual I found two really lovely girls who were important persons in their school years.
First, I found this young lady who was co-editor of the yearbook.  That's a big honor!  Here she is?  Who is she?

Then I found a real treasure.  This lady was named Miss Searcy High School!  What a thrill!  So who was she?  If you know who they are, you need to tell something about them when you identify them.

Be sure to note the styles.  Saddle … (24 comments)

searcy arkansas: Harding College, Searcy Arkanasas, in 1948. Aerial view and some buildings for your review. - 11/21/10 07:17 AM
A Harding College (now Harding University) yearbook from 1948 has been rediscovered and I'm borrowing some pictures for this blog.  First is an aerial view of the school.  For fun perhaps you can find the following structures in the aerial view.  I graduated from Harding with a degree in Art so I know that the President's house was turned into an Art gallery.  My own student exhibit was displayed there so I recognize it in the picture below.

This house is the President's home.

This one belonged to the Dean.

This one is the boy's dormitory.  How things have … (12 comments)

searcy arkansas: Thank Heaven for Little Girls.....without them what would little boys do? Old picture from Searcy Arkansas. - 10/23/10 01:21 AM

The old song has to come to mind when looking at this picture.  The little boy stands there strutting his stuff.  Never mind that his pants were too big, his shirt a bit small.  His smile was large and genuine.  One little girl is linked to him.
The people in the picture, in case you are curious, are Rodger Duncan, his cousins Sandra Lynn Joyner Johnson and Carolyn Holmes Swindle.  Barbara Duncan Wilson is in the center (yes, my sister-in-law is also named Barbara).  The smallest girl is a cousin whose name I don't remember.
The picture was taken at the … (5 comments)

searcy arkansas: Race Street revisited. Searcy AR Sleuths....recognize this one? - 10/10/10 02:58 PM

I always liked this building.  This picture comes from an old Searcy High School annual, year not remembered.
Knowing how the Searcy Sleuths get bored and desire a challenge I'm not going to tell where it is or where it was and see if you can tell me.
So you tell me if you remember it?

searcy arkansas: A mystery photo. Can you tell me what this is? And what it does? - 10/01/10 01:38 AM
For fun today, I'd like to know if you can tell me what this picture is of.  Perhaps a little digging into history might help and if you come up with the answers, I can tell you more on comments.

Our county is full of history and interesting things if we just look around.  My trips into the county to check on listings often make me do double-takes when I see something different.  This was entirely new to me.

searcy arkansas: There's no hair on these tomatoes! Golfer tomatoes! Success at last. - 08/11/10 02:36 PM
When I came home today I found this lovely bowl of tomatoes on the kitchen counter.  Not just strung out on the counter in any old syle but nicely rounded in this little bowl with the best sides forward!

In case anyone wants to go back and read about my husband's tomato farming, the blogs are listed in this blog.  They were pretty funny when I had to report on his bringing hair home from the barber shop to put around his tomato plants.  And about his !@#$% words aimed at the deer who sneaked into the yard and ate his tomatoes.

searcy arkansas: Who remembers El Charro? Searcy Arkansas had a great Mexican food restaurant. - 07/06/10 08:37 AM

Remember this delightful restaurant?  It was probably Searcy's first Mexican food restaurant and I remember it fondly.  However, I'd forgotten how it looked.  I vaguely remembered driving out East Race Street and pulling into the parking lot.  The whole thing is gone now.  I can't remember exactly where it was located.
It had 150 seating capacity and did business in the same location for 17 years.  This picture and history was in a 1981 real estate brochure offering it for sale.  No price was listed and the address was not listed.  In fact, the entire brochure had great pictures but no … (17 comments)

searcy arkansas: Punky Caldwell reblogged. C L Coyle and other band members from Searcy Arkansas. - 07/04/10 03:58 PM
We did a blog a short time ago that was a fun blog about long haired music.  A young man who turned out to be Punky Caldwell, quite well know in his day, got noticed and commented on a lot.  His daughter found the blog and sent us additional pictures.
It seems Punky died young but was quite a musician in his day.  Here is a picture of Punky and his band.

Band members were C L Coyle, Coot Brown and Bishop Horten.  They were together in the late 50's and played at "The Silver Moon" outside of Searcy. The … (12 comments)

searcy arkansas: Letters, letters, I get letters.....and I like getting the letters. - 06/28/10 02:19 PM

One thing about a blog is that it stays out there in internet land for a long long time.  We may forget it but someone else is finding it and finding it interesting.  Such is the case with my Beebe Arkansas depot blog.  I just received this inquiry.
Dear Barbara,
I just recently purchased an old desk from the flea market that now occupies the Beebe Depot.  They told me this desk came with the depot. They had no idea how long it had been there but I did do some research on the company that made it and they had … (14 comments)

searcy arkansas: A house full of memories and a Mother's Day greeting in the back yard. - 05/09/10 03:31 AM
Going to revisit an REO property in Bald Knob yesterday made me very aware of Mother's Day.
The house was built in 1927.  It's a little cottage style house with a price tag of $51,000.
A stubborn front door made me go around to the back to get in.  Look what greeted me.

Every bloom was perfect.  It was like a Mother's Day greeting right there in the middle of the back yard!  Of course my immediate thought was how many memories that house and yard holds and how I should share this Mother's Day greeting with activerain friends.
In … (12 comments)

searcy arkansas: The 40's in Searcy Arkansas. So you think our streets are rough now???? - 04/26/10 12:43 PM
My husband says he grew up out in the country.  He says it was W-A-Y out in the country at the time he was a little boy.  I never believed him until I saw this picture.  This house was where he grew up.  It was bought by his parents when he was a wee one.  It had some land which was used to run cows.  The barn which shows in this picture was struck by lightning many years later and burned to the ground.  By that time he was married to me and the whole neighborhood came out to see the … (18 comments)

searcy arkansas: The toilet paper passage is alive and well. The kid's popularity is waving in the wind. - 04/04/10 02:14 AM
Remember getting rolled?  By toilet paper?  You get up and your mom and dad are cussin' and fussin' about the mess in your yard and how you're going to have to clean it up?
You look out and pretend to be furious but secretly your little heart is pumping because you've been selected!  You're popular!!  The gang remembered you on Saturday night and left toilet paper all over the front yard!!
I'm calling it the toilet paper passage (we could call it message) and it is alive and doing well in my neighbor's yard.  It's more fun as a parent to … (14 comments)

searcy arkansas: Why'd they pose that cute kid on top of that torture machine???? Farmall Tractor - 03/29/10 02:46 AM
Would you look at the tires on this contraption.  Can you imagine being run over by that thing?  It looks like something from a futuristic movie.... and with a line of these going across the country, it would wipe out everything.
The cute kid is an activerain reader and supplied this photo saying it was taken in 1941 at Harmony Arkansas.  Perhaps we can persuade him to tell us more about the machine and reassure us that he survived this gruesome experience.  Wonder if any of these machines still operate.  Wonder if they'd work on a super highway?

searcy arkansas: Bill collectors and friends are having a tough time finding the person they need. - 03/28/10 02:08 AM
Our landline rings.  Husband answers and they ask for Barbara Duncan.
I pick it up.  "Is this Barbara Duncan?  I am calling to collect an unpaid debt.  I need to tell you that anything you say can be used against you."
I listen to see what else she has to say.
Then I ask her very politely, "Well, what are you calling about?"
She says it is an account with some bank or finance company or credit card company.  I can't remember the exact words.
I have to say to her, "Ma'am, I don't have an account with that company.  You have the … (26 comments)

searcy arkansas: You loved the Rendezvous in Searcy Arkansas? Now you can buy it! - 03/25/10 01:02 PM

Ahhh, this is the old Rendezvous that you may have loved.  It is located on Main Street in Searcy Arkansas and many civic meetings, weddings, parties, and family meals were held in this building.  Memories are wonderful.  It was also a bus stop.  This wonderful picture of the bus stopping at the Rendezvous was made by Paula Windsor Thompson when she was a wee tot doing a photography project.

It is up for sale right now.  Price is $235,000 and it was built in 1944 and has 8384 sq. ft.  For a better view of it today visit my personal … (17 comments)
