white county ar: The copper thieves are still out there. - 09/25/08 02:27 AM
The latest copper theft was a surprise in Searcy Arkansas.  The house had been remodeled by investors and they had found a buyer.  The house was in city limits and not isolated.  One of the investors had been in the house a few days before the close and flipped on the lights and they didn't come on but he checked the breaker and noticed it was off.  That would explain the lights not coming on.
The close took place.  The new owner went to his house, turned on the lights and the breaker and he still had no lights.  Closer examination found that thieves … (23 comments)

white county ar: Truman Baker Chevrolet. A big name in Searcy Arkansas for years. - 09/24/08 02:21 AM

Here's another one of friend Paula's pictures.  She won a camera and went around town snapping pictures for a Girl Scout project.  It was sometime in the 40's.
This was the Truman Baker corner at the corner of Race and Main.  The Truman Baker Chevrolet dealership took up this corner for many years.  It has been less than 5 years, probably, since they closed it down and moved it to a larger spot near the freeway.  The corner now has a Walgreen's drugstore.  All buildings have been torn down.

white county ar: Mansion in Judsonia that survived the 1952 tornado - 08/29/08 12:34 AM

I blogged a few weeks ago about the vicious tornado that killed so many people in Judsonia Arkansas and left fear in the hearts of all survivors.  I had to go to Judsonia this week and because of blogging interest decided to drive by and see the mansion that survived the tornado.  I'm posting the picture of that mansion and again posting the picture that shows it after the tornado.  The tornado was in 1952.
It had quite a few flaws but it still looks pretty grand, doesn't it.

white county ar: Look what those little brats did! Bad kids! - 08/22/08 01:38 PM

On my way to work, I thought I saw birds on the power line.  Look again!  Not birds.  Shoes!  Two pairs of shoes wrapped around the power line.  Little brat kids have been throwing shoes up in the air!
BUT THEN....BUT THEN....I started thinkin'.....little brat kids playing outside!!  HOORAY!!
They got away from the computer games, the TV, and actually played outdoors.  I can even hear them.
"MMMOMMMM. Brother threw my tennis shoes onto the power line!"
Mom, "Brother, what did you do that for!"
Brother, "I didn't mean to.  I just threw them in the air and they landed … (21 comments)

white county ar: Railroad station in Searcy Arkansas - 08/06/08 12:22 AM

A day or two ago we put up a picture of the bus stopping in Searcy AR for passengers to board, alight, or have a rest stop.  Lots of us boarded buses to get around.
Here's an old picture of the train depot in Searcy AR.  I think it may be here still but turned into a business location.  Native Searcians may have to tell me.
I hope some people can enlighten us on riding a train because my one experience with train riding was a nightmare.  I was traveling from Arkansas to Georgia and it must have been in … (22 comments)

white county ar: Old Rodger's Hospital in Searcy AR. A view from the past. - 07/31/08 03:07 PM

This photo of the old Rodgers Hospital on Woodruff Street in Searcy AR was taken by my friend Paula when she was doing a project for 4H as a youngster.   Look at the age of the cars!  It was owned by Porter Rodgers, Sr., a physician who was loved in the city.  I made a trip to the hospital late in the evening once because I had a daughter who was ill.  Dr. Rodgers was there and took care of her.  I guess he was making his rounds because surely he didn't get out in the packed snow just to see her.  … (34 comments)

white county ar: Another photo of Searcy AR before streets were paved! - 07/13/08 01:34 AM

This is another picture of Searcy Arkansas White County taken so many years ago.  I love the guy on the light pole who may have climbed up there for the photo.  I would assume photos were a big deal then.  Do you think there were people on the streets for the photo or were there that many loiterers?
This view is of Spruce Street going North or the West side of the court square.
The photo was given to me by a friend whose family owned the daily newspaper.  He remarked that he'd thrown dozens of great … (9 comments)

white county ar: Judsonia AR. Dirt streets photo. - 07/01/08 12:33 PM

Judsonia Arkansas was a thriving little town in 1952.  This shows a picture of the streets much earlier than 1952 when they were dirt.  I love seeing the old town photos.  Judsonia is just about 5 miles from Searcy, our city of 20,000.
The saddest thing about Judsonia is that in 1952 a tornado came through and wiped the town out almost.  About 50+ people were killed.  The reports say that you couldn't tell where streets were because the damage was so bad.  It was a terrible thing.
Now if you are selling property in Judsonia you'll find a storm … (11 comments)

white county ar: Built in 1960 and will be around another 50 years - 06/23/08 12:29 AM

You should see the wood in this house.  It was built in 1960 by a wealthy family in Searcy AR who owned and operated a flooring or lumber mill.  They made oak flooring that was about 3/4 inch thick.  Architect Norris Sparks designed their house and we still have the blueprints.  It is placed on 5 city lots which stretch from one street to the next.  When built it was on the edge of town.
Now, of course, the town has come out to meet it.  The property, however, is zoned R3 so it can not be used for commercial … (14 comments)

white county ar: Esso motor truck - 06/21/08 03:38 AM

I'm fortunate to have a friend who has supplied me with lots of photos of Searcy Arkansas's history.  This, I believe, is her dad standing beside his Esso truck.  Note the lettering on the side of the truck.  Searcy Arkansas is a progressive city of approximately 20,000 people and serves as the county seat of White County which serves about 60,000 people.  Anita, give us more of this history in your comments and correct me where I'm wrong.

white county ar: Class at high school - 06/19/08 12:23 AM

Look at these eager children!  This is a photo made in front of Searcy High School, the old one that burned down.  Once again, correct me in comments if I am wrong.  This photo was provided by my friend Anita.  Searcy AR is a progressive city of approximately 20,000 residents.  I don't know any of the children and don't know the year but I love looking at the clothing worn by the kids.  I can almost assure you that none of the jeans were bought with a "worn" look built in.  They were probably worn by brothers or sisters and … (8 comments)

white county ar: Searcy Arkansas old filling station, boy scouts, and bad tires - 06/16/08 12:10 AM

Here's another treasure from the old picture stack of Searcy Arkansas White County photos.  It's an old filling station with two young boy scouts and two adults.  The boys are holding a tire and an inner tube that may require repairs.  Do you remember tires with inner tubes that had to be taken out and repaired?  I remember people talking about tubeless tires as if they were some miracle.  I guess they were.  My friend, who supplied the photo, has this to say about it.
Here is everything you want to know about the picture but were afraid to ask: … (3 comments)

white county ar: Morning Sun, Searcy AR, a place that is rapidly changing - 05/22/08 03:28 AM

Look what I've found this time.  This is a postcard of Morning Sun, Searcy AR.  It is a newspaper copy and not a great picture but who would have thought there'd be one at all?
Morning Sun reminds me of one of our real estate friends who said as a young man he worked at the filling station there for some super salesman.  He was trained to go out and say, "Fill er up?"  Then he'd do the service on the car.  They apparently also had a snack bar.  He was to make a milk shake and … (5 comments)
