white county arkansas: Now this is a B--I--G tree.....beside an old Searcy Arkansas home. - 10/14/09 09:11 PM
Each time I drive by this house and it is almost every day, I drive a little faster thinking that if one of those limbs comes down on me, I'm a goner! Well, not really. But I always think that the tree is as historic as the house. This house is known, I believe, as the Deener house. I once had it listed and was fascinated by the features that dated back so far. Reportedly it was built in 1912. The house is on Center Street in Searcy Arkansas, White County. In fact, here's the way it looked

white county arkansas: Well, where'd the Pergo go? - 10/10/09 07:35 AM
This is the second home that I've had listed as a foreclosure property from which the Pergo flooring has been removed. It was kinda funny on the first one but this second one makes me wonder if it's easily transportable, sorta like a rug, and can be installed in a minute in someone's new house. The first picture shows how the house looked when it sold for around $80,000. The second one shows how it looks now as a foreclosure. There had been lots of work done with replacement windows and siding and updated cabinetry and bath. Now we're back to the

white county arkansas: A rainbow over a little horse farm in the city limits of Searcy, Arkansas. - 10/05/09 06:51 PM
We have friends who have lived in the same house for years and a house which used to be in the country. Driving to visit them seemed to take a long time a long time ago. After all, it was in the country. Now the city has grown out to meet them. But they have certain privileges because they are "grandfathered in." For one thing, they have a lovely horse barn and corral for the horses. They can keep a donkey or a horse and still walk to the grocery store. Their latest pets are chickens. We rode over to the house and saw chickens roaming free. They

white county arkansas: Good art? Bad art? Just a postcard of Beebe Arkansas's old Anderson Grill. - 10/01/09 07:48 AM
Most postcards are as realistic as can be. This one must have been done by a true artist who used artist's license to create this junction in his own way. Having been trained as an artist and teaching art for many years, I find this one interesting. It's almost like folk art. The subject? It is the Junction of U.S. Highway 64-67 Beebe Arkansas probably 40 or 50 years ago. Anderson's Grill was a great place to eat. Folks from all over congregated there for excellent steaks and salads. I remember the salad dressing was REAL Roquefort dressing, not blue

white county arkansas: Get Down....Downtown Searcy held this weekend! Crowds! Big Success! - 09/27/09 08:26 AM
Drifting to Get Down....Downtown Searcy yesterday was a pleasure. The streets of downtown were roped off and vendors of all kinds lined the streets, especially food vendors. I almost bought ribs three times to take home and eat later. Smells were fabulous. Music was on each end of the street with a variety of entertainment. I snapped a few pictures. I loved this one with the big dog and tiny dog. The couple graciously let me snap their picture. Another favorite was this climbing mountain. Someone had set it up and the kids loved it. There was a line to

white county arkansas: They don't build them like this anymore in Searcy Arkansas....and a vacation spot for Nutsy. - 06/12/09 04:38 PM
These pictures were taken on our main drag, Race Street in Searcy Arkansas, and show the detail on a house built in 1925! It's still standing and has magnificent detail for a home that would be considered modest in size today. I especially like the detail around the windows and soffitts. What craftsperson could do this detail today???? The way Race Street is expanding with commercial properties taking away the old family homes, I'll drive by one day and it will be zapped.....gone....so these pictures may someday be precious. And while I was snapping pictures, I discovered this chimney!

white county arkansas: Downtown Searcy Arkansas is changing again. Stott's Drug Store. - 05/24/09 03:31 PM
This old photo taken by my friend Paula when she was doing a Girl Scout's photography project is one of my favorite of Searcy Arkansas during the 40's, I think. I've posted various pictures that she loaned me for my blog. This photo shows what is now Quattlebaum Music Store and what is still Stott's Drug Store on the right side of the picture which is the South side of the Court Square. This photo shows Quattlebaum Music and Stott's Drugs as they were just a few months ago. I was cruising downdown and snapped

white county arkansas: Old Armstrong Home in Armstrong Springs White County AR - 05/15/09 03:00 PM
Here's another great old picture taken at Armstrong Springs, White County Arkansas. Armstrong Springs had a hotel where people came and stayed to drink the healing waters of the springs. Ruby Nell Woodson Moye loaned me the picture of this picture of the Armstrong family, Ruby's relatives on her mother's side. It is taken on the front steps of a house that still stands there. Ruby said that her grandfather bottled and sold the water! Sounds like he was way ahead of his time in selling bottled water. He is the 4th from left, middle row. Armstrong Springs became

white county arkansas: Smyrna Church, White County Arkansas, Searcy. Dedicated in 1857. It's OLD!! - 05/12/09 07:07 AM
This photograph of our old Smyrna Church on Highway 36 West taken in 1981 ? by one of the Armstrongs from Armstrong Springs was loaned to me by Ruby Nell Woodson Moye. She found it as she was cleaning out her desk and going through things long forgotten. The church is now undergoing restoration. The photographer's composition is very nice. Most of us would have centered the church, wouldn't we? For another view and a little history of the church, click here. From this link you can find out a lot of White County history. Go for it!!

white county arkansas: Seven brothers......handsome too......all gone now.... - 03/04/09 04:17 PM
Several years ago my husband's mother was shopping in a flea market or a discount store and saw a lot of cheaply framed photos of people and things. She did a double take when she saw this picture. She bought copies for all of her children. I treasure it. It was a copy of a photograph of her husband's father when he was a young man.....with his 6 brothers! They were lined up on this board for a posed photograph and they were all so handsome. They were all dressed basically alike also, just as young people today dress. So

white county arkansas: I need a pony tail so I can wear my royalty cap. BUY LAND! - 02/18/09 07:33 PM
I wrote the following blog a few months ago in a state of euphoria because I'd received a royalty check from leased mineral rights. The gas companies held a royalty owners meeting on Nov 10 which I did not attend. They later sent me a nice letter saying they regretted that I was not there but they wanted to give me some information and a number to call for questions. There was a very nice folder and a cap for me to wear. This was shipped by UPS with Extremely Urgent on the package! WOW! Wonder how many they sent out.

white county arkansas: Is he dead, alive, or just playing possum? - 02/15/09 09:28 PM
Going to a new foreclosure property is always an adventure. Walk softly and carry a big stick....didn't someone famous say that? While getting a shot of the foreclosure house from across the street, I did a double-take when I saw this animal under a tree beside the side walk and actually in the front yard of a well-maintained home. I didn't use a stick to prod him but he sure looked healthy to be so dead. I've heard that opossums play dead! Perhaps he wasn't dead, just playing possum?

white county arkansas: Jim's Dining Car from old Searcy Arkansas - 12/28/08 04:29 PM
Here's another great picture of old Searcy Arkansas. I've never seen this picture before and had no idea that there was once a converted railroad car located at the corner of West Race and Pine Streets. This picture was sent to me by Don Thompson who says he loved eating there because they had the very best BBQ sandwiches and pecan pie. Don also says that one of the ladies at the entrance is Anita Fuller's mother, Corrine Hart. Don and Anita are frequent contributors to this blog! Thanks to both of you. Now hopefully, we can get a little more

white county arkansas: Searcy High School Girls' Basketball Team 1915. - 11/06/08 08:01 PM
In 1915 Searcy evidently had a basketball team for girls. Here's a magnificent picture showing them with possibly their coaches. The basketball is marked 1915. In the background is the old school. I believe that sometime after this the male leaders decided that sports were bad for girls and eliminated all of them. Girls were ignored until 1972 when Title IX was passed which said basically: ""No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving

white county arkansas: Our atomic clock is something we continue to find amazing. - 11/02/08 08:32 PM
My husband got credit this morning for something he didn't do! I totally forgot that the time changed while I was sleeping so even though I stayed in bed a little longer than usual I really got up too early. The paper boy must have forgotten too because the papers were delivered and I sat down to read the paper and drink my coffee. I looked at the clock and it said 6:00! I imagined my usually forgetful hubby actually remembering to change the clock and thought fondly of him even though he was still snoozin'. When he staggered in he

white county arkansas: Analysis of a perfect Halloween original art work. - 10/26/08 11:30 AM
With Halloween around the corner and little kids and big kids wanting to go out and trick or treat and dress up in fantasy costumes, I'd like to show you this picture done by a child. It bowled me over when it was done. (I'm a former art teacher.) It was great for these reasons, at least in my opinion. Kids love two story houses and this one is two story. Kids have noticed that bricks and cracks show through the stucco on spooky houses and this one depicts them in full color. Blue clouds swirl around in the black sky.

white county arkansas: I shouldn't leave my cell phone in the back room of my house. - 10/02/08 07:30 PM
I admit I'm bad about coming home, throwing off the work clothes and putting on the oldest, ugliest but most comfortable clothing in the house. While doing this, I put my cell phone on a shelf and often walk out and leave it on the shelf. Today was one of those days. When I checked to see if I had any messages, I had a missed call. I quickly dialed the number with intentions of apologizing for my negligence. The phone says, "Please enjoy the music while waiting for your party to answer the phone," or something very much like that.

white county arkansas: Living estate auction at this condo in Searcy AR. Now under contract!! - 06/26/08 07:39 AM
We have this condo under contract now! This Saturday will be a big day for the sellers because they'll be getting rid of a lot of family treasures. No family member has room to hold everything so most of the household items, antiques, furniture, etc., will be sold. If you want to see some of the sale items go to this website and view the items. Sale is at 9:00 Saturday June 28. We don't have a lot of condos in Searcy Arkansas, a small 20,000 population city approximately 50 miles from Little Rock Arkansas. The first ones built

white county arkansas: Better than new house sold in short amount of time. SOLD! - 06/22/08 08:51 AM
What an extreme pleasure to put a big SOLD sign across this property that I blogged about about a month ago. Selling agents were great to work with, buyers were nice and the owners of the house kept it super nice for showing. And it only took one or two showings to get it sold. Thanks to my lovely friends who are now moving to another chapter in their lives!! SOLD I wrote this blog just a few days ago and now I have the listing on this lovely house located at 105 Christopher in Judsonia. It is

white county arkansas: A view of Searcy Arkansas downtown - 05/29/08 09:36 AM
While looking at old photos of our Searcy AR White County town, I was loaned this wonderful photo as well as the ones yesterday of our old Safeway store that was in the middle of downtown. A friend has given me permission to post it. It shows part of the court house sqare and the memorial that stands on the SW corner. It also shows the Safeway store but it is an easier-to-recognize location in this picture. The old Security Bank building shown here is under renovation right now. I hope it will end up looking like this photo again. Thanks
