It takes a strong heart to be a foster. And a lot of Kleenex.
I've been wanting to bring home strays since I was 5 and hence my mother never let me see the inside of an animal shelter. So as soon as I flew the coop, that's the first thing I did. Heartbreaking. Especially when you know what many of the final outcomes will be.
There's only 1 really cushy shelter here in San Diego-- Joan Kroc donated millions to totally rehab the cold old decrepit Gaines Street facility. They moved it a few blocks and it blossomed into an … (4 comments)

At Lab Rescuers, we rescue labs and lab mixes from shelters all around Southern California, we rehabilitate the injured ones, and we love and care for the abandoned ones, many of whom have been treated so cruelly. animal rescue: Lessons Learned from Rescuing Animals - 01/20/10 12:27 PM
For the past 4 months, we've been fostering Gus, a very delightful dog whose owner no longer has a home or the means to care for him. I loved Gus the minute I saw him. My dog-loving son, however, has remained a bit detached, knowing that at any time, Gus might have to leave us and go back to his former owner. More than once, he's asked: "Do we really have to give him back?"
We've adopted many animals before, and most are older and are only with us a few years anyway. But Gus is 3 and full of life … (0 comments)
