Ocala's Final Honor Flight

How appropriate as we approach Memorial Day that volunteers and supporters organize a trip to Washington DC's WWII memorial for what is often called The Greatest Generation.  It is so sad that for many of these heros Ocala's last flight may be their last flight.

 

Veterans prepare for May 23 Ocala Honor Flight

 

 

"Julian Schulze, a World War II veteran, will be on the final Ocala Honor Flight, which will take wing on May 23.

"On Oct. 25, 2012, the last scheduled flight was supposed to include two airplanes filled with veterans bound for Washington, D.C., to visit war memorials and other sites. One plane departed as scheduled. The other, which had a mechanical malfunction, was left sitting on the tarmac at the Ocala International Airport.

Ocala Honor Flight organizers, and their partners in the endeavor, made good on the trip, however, and many of the veterans from the failed flight, including Schulze, will now make their visit to the nation's capital. About 150 passengers, including the veterans, their escorts and medical support personnel, are scheduled to visit the World War II Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, Capitol Building and White House."

Ocala Honor Flight

WELCOME HOME: The public is invited to arrive at the Ocala International Airport at 750 SW 60th Ave. around 8:15 p.m. Thursday, May 23, to welcome home the final flight. The Kingdom of the Sun Concert Band is scheduled to perform. Attendees are encouraged to bring American flags.

FILM PRESENTATION: A film about the Ocala Honor Flight program will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26, at The Appleton Museum of Art, 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd.,Ocala. Admission is free, but reservations are required. To RSVP call 854-5230 or visit www.ocalahonorlfight.org.
