THOSE MAGNIFICANT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES!!  That title from a famous slapstick movie reminds me to what links man goes to conquer space and the skies.  One of my favorite parts of the balloon festival is the guest appearance of the Airborne Parachute Demonstration Team.  Have you ever wondered how they do it?  Parachute out from helpcopters and planes so high up we can't even see them on the ground and … (6 comments)

childrens activities: Hot Air Balloon Championship Aug.6 and 7, 2010, in Baton Rouge Has Something for Everyone in the Family - 08/06/10 10:03 AM
It started this morning and winds down Sunday, the annual hot air balloon championship in Baton Rouge.  Conveniently located at Pennington on Perkins Road, it's filled with activities to thrill all ages.  Each morning you should plan to be seated at the field by 6:30am to see All the balloons take off as the competition starts for the day.  They drop a bean bag marker onto a target.  And each evening about half the balloons will set up on the field and take-off for the "the hare" and "the hounds" event.

This is one weekend I look forward to all year long:  when the Pennington hot air balloon championships come to Baton Rouge Louisiana. 
This year there will be other special features:  The Black Daggers parachute Team, the official U.S. Army Special Op Command Parachute Demonstration Team will perform live aerial demonstrations.  After their demonstration, the skies will glow with spectacular fireworks on Friday and Saturday night following the balloon glow.

There will be many other events such as the Balloon Glow in the evenings after sunset where the balloons look  like huge lighted ornaments.
