October 30, 2010
Madison is bracing itself for the costumed (if contained) chaos that is Freakfest. The city-organized event will be held on State Street on Saturday, Oct. 30, beginning at 7 p.m. It drew more than 55,000 people last year. Students will love the musical lineup this year. Acts will play on three stages: at the top of State Street, in Concrete Park on Frances Street and on Gilman Street at Peace Park.
A lot of excitement will be generated with  OK Go is the headliner group. They became an Internet sensation due to their fun and funky Grammy-winning treadmill video, "Here It Goes … (2 comments)

Speechless Sunday: Reflections from Capitol Square in Madison Wisconsin 53707 - 10/24/10 11:34 AM
Speechless Sunday: Reflections from the Capitol Square in Madison Wisconsin 53707
One aspect of photography I especially enjoy is the photographic record of something which appears abstract.  I love reflections of trees in a pond or lake, especially in autumn. However, this very bright sunny day while strolling around the Capitol Square in the city of Madison  with a friend, I captured many images of buildings reflected in other buildings.  Here is one of them. It seems out of context but this is exactly what I saw.

Silly Sunday II: Pullitzer Prize Winning Humorist Dave Barry: On Meetings - 10/24/10 10:46 AM
17? 24? 99?  How many meetings do you attend per month?  What is your record with a single client in one day?  We meet with lenders, home inspectors, customers, clients, home stagers, landscapers, handymen, architects, builders, developers.  We attend lectures, seminars, webinars, sales meetings, board meetings, committee meetings and you-name-it-meetings. I have held meeting where people cry, scream, and, thankfully, laugh. My philosophy is we have to laugh at life and ourselves to make sense of things or to keep problems from becoming gigantically overwhelming.
Dave Barry writes here about corporate meetings and this was published in Reader's Digest and in the … (0 comments)

Pears and Real Estate Listings: The Window of Opportunity to Sell Your House - 10/22/10 12:20 PM
When you bring home green pears from the supermarket, you have to keep them out and let them ripen before you can eat them.  There is a short Window of Opportunity. The pear on the left in my photograph is ripe and ready. If you wait too long for pears to ripen, they will look more like the pear on the right.  You can still eat it, but you have to cut out the bad spots or perhaps you end up not eating it at all.
When you list your home, there is a Window of Opportunity, too.  Your Realtor and you … (9 comments)

The Fine Art of Negotiating with Quotes from Humorist Dave Barry - 10/20/10 08:37 PM
Pulitzer Prize Winning Humorist, Dave Barry, on Negotiating (and hiring a Realtor). This is for Karin Lundeen, and Rebecca Harris who asked, when they each ReBlogged my post from "Silly Sunday" if Dave had anything on this topic.
I strongly advise you to use a broker, for the same reason that I'd advise you to pay somebody else to repair your automobile transmission, namely: No matter how incompetent or overpaid this person is, he or she can't possibly screw things as badly as you would if you did it yourself.
A fine example of the kind of negotiating approach you should take can be found in … (10 comments)

The Heart and Soul of UW Madison: University of Wisconsin Memorial Union Autumn Waterfront Scenes - 10/20/10 08:34 AM
The Heart and Soul of UW Madison-that is what the banners on the Terrace say and who is to argue?  Even with the concerts over, students, professors, families and their dogs still gather for conversation or just hangin' out.  Walks, runs and bike rides to Picnic Point are an enjoyable side trip, and you can still take out a boat if you are a Hoofer or watch the big crane lift their larger top-heavy sailboats out of Lake Mendota and transport them to their winter cradles.  You can always warm up for a fireside breakfast in the Rathskellar if it gets … (3 comments)

Silly Sunday: That Irreverant Humorist Dave Barry on "How to Argue Effectively" - 10/17/10 08:43 AM
Silly Sunday: That Irreverant Humorist Dave Barry on "How to Argue Effectively"

In researching tips for effective argueing, I found that Thesaurus.com offers this definition:
Compare your opponent to Adolf Hitler.
This is your heavy artillery, for when your opponent is obviously right and you are spectacularly wrong. Bring Hitler up subtly. Say, "That sounds suspiciously like something Adolf Hitler might say," or "You certainly do remind me of Adolf Hitler."

National Mustard Museum, Parmenter Street, Middleton Wisconsin 53562 - 10/16/10 06:07 PM

The  National Mustard Museum, Parmenter Street, MiddletonWisconsin 53562.
One of the newest attractions  on Parmenter Street  in the the Good Neighbor City is the  National Mustard Museum and store.
Both of these two images were taken  while I stood outside the front door of the Stark Company office.  My Broker/Manager,  Jennifer Utter, was pleased that her son, Ryan and girlfriend, Adrienna were visiting from Colorado.

They wanted to take it all in and I followed them with my camera. Arianna's favorite flavor was the whole grain mustard with Guinness Stout.
They carry 5,000 varieties of mustards, the larget collection of … (15 comments)

Let Them Eat Carrot Cake: The New Farmer's Market in Downtown Middleton Wisconsin - 10/07/10 01:33 AM

Now, there are not one, but TWO Farmer's Markets in Middleton Wisconsin.
GreenwayStation  has it's Thursday market. It is a delightful place and well established for Middleton residents and shoppers from all over the greater Madison area.  This Saturday, pumpkins will be given away to the first 100 kids who stop by.
And now for your veggie shopping pleasurer, a new  and  "very sincere" pumpkin patch, er, I mean Farmer's market tucked away on Terrace Avenue beside the Middleton Depot Museum and stretched out behind the   Middleton Libraryand St. Luke's Lutheran Church on the other side of the railroad tracks.   If … (2 comments)

Door County Century Bike Ride - 10/05/10 11:40 PM
The  Century Bike Ride 2010 was recently held in  Door County and a couple of very good musician friends of mine from Madison participated, as they have for several years.  Adam Michie of  Bluetrain and Bonobo Secret Handshake and Mark Loder of The Relics are pictured in the first picture.

There were some changes this year, primarily location.  The Fairgrounds in Sturgeon Bay is the new locale which affords more people the opportunity  to participate due to the ability to overcome space limitations.

There are two excellent aspects of this race.  The local scenery all along the way is one of them, but the other … (4 comments)

Harry Andruss of Pillar to Post Inspections: A Greener Kitchen Plus A Snakes Alive! Story - 10/05/10 08:29 PM
When you are in business, you want to refer business to people whom you trust and who conduct themselves in a professional manner and deliver exceptional service.
Harry Andruss,  of Pillar to Post, is a home inspector I have referred and used numbers of times in my years as a Realtor and I have referred him to many other  Realtors, as well.  I do keep to recommending a list of Home Inspectors to Clients but I am always happy to see when Harry is going to perform the home inspection for my  Middleton Wisconsin buyers or my Madison area buyers.

Robert and Julie are happily setteled in the UP now, or Upper Penninusula of Wisconsin.  That had been "home" to them before they moved to the   Madison Wisconsin suburb of Sun Prairie.   They wanted to return to family and longtime friends. Robert even got his dream job.
They tried for a long time to sell their townhome themselves, since their situation was less than ideal and they knew they could not, as is the case with many many Americans, get as much for the house as they owed. l was referred to them by a mutual friend and together we set out … (2 comments)

Wisconsin Realtors Association Convention 2010: CE and My Favorite Class - 10/02/10 12:03 PM

The  WRA Annual Convention  wrapped up this past Tuesday.  I took four of my required Continuing Ed courses but my very favorite class was a Blogging class from Eric Kodner.
Keywords and captions and creating hot links from pictures, are just some of the things Eric covered in classwith his always professional yet quite  personable manner.  With patience and engaging in 1:1's, he manages to still keep  the others in the room, to whom he is not speaking, interested.  Eric shared some of his blogging class  with ActiveRain in his Lake Minnetonka Homes & Madeline Island Real Estate Blog.
It is an interesting dynamic taking CE.  … (3 comments)
