book club: The Portsmouth Book Club - February Pick - The Hunger Games - 01/30/10 12:44 AM
Last month we discussed, The Help, by Kathryn Stockett.  Our group rallied around this book in unison and gave it the universal thumbs up.  Although the book was heavily weighted in feminine character and thought (there wasn't one strong male character throughout), the men enjoyed this novel as equally as the women.  For me it was a bit of a slow start, but once it got going, you just couldn't put it down.  I was up until 3am one evening (morning!) finishing this book because I just had to find out what happened next.  I have never understood how an author … (0 comments)

book club: The Portsmouth Book Club - December Pick - 11/17/09 01:33 PM

Our December pick for the Portsmouth Book Club is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Here is a brief synopsis from Barnes and Noble of The Book Thief: It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . . Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t … (2 comments)

book club: Portsmouth Book Club August - Murder on the Orient Express - 07/17/09 11:58 AM
The Portsmouth Book Club met last Tuesday, the 14th, to discuss, Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson and Oliver Relin at McMenemy's Irish Restaurant and Pub.  What a fantastic book!  The book was an auto-biography of sorts of Mr. Mortenson, written by journalist Oliver Relin.  The book details Mr. Mortenson's trials and tribulations during his campaign in Pakistan and Afghanistan building schools for girls.  If Mr. Mortenson had written this book himself, I would have thought, "Oh, sure.  Nice Ego."  And if this had been a fictitious novel, it would have been terrible, because you would NEVER believe the authenticity … (2 comments)

book club: The Portsmouth Book Club July Pick - Three Cups of Tea - 06/10/09 12:03 AM
Tonight we had our June meeting for the Portsmouth Book Club where we discussed, The Reader, by Bernhard Schlink.  Our book club now has over 150 members!  We have been growing like crazy.  Who knew that we had that many fierce book lovers in Seacoast New Hampshire?  I finally took a picture of one of our meetings with a few of our members who came this evening.  It is a bit fuzzy.  I am kneeling in the front row in blue.

I have not seen the movie yet (which stars Kate Winslet), and I hear that the movie does justice … (3 comments)

Annoucement One:  Our June pick is, The Reader, by Bernhard Schlink.  We will meet, as usual, on the second Tuesday of the month in June at 7pm.  Here is a brief synopsis of the novel from the editor:
"Set in postwar Germany, The Reader is a provocative, morally challenging, and deeply moving novel about a young boy's erotic awakening in a clandestine love affair with a mysterious older woman. Falling ill on his way home from school, 15-year-old Michael Berg is rescued by Hanna, a woman twice his age. For a time, the two become passionate … (0 comments)

book club: The Portsmouth Book Club says Goodbye to Molly Malones - 10/10/08 10:04 AM
I am the founder and organizer of The Portsmouth Book Club which meets on the second Tuesday of every month at Molly Malones Irish Pub.  We currently have about 70 members and about 15-20 attend the meetings each month.
As many of you Portsmouth Dwellers are aware of, Molly Malones is gone.  We are terribly sad that not only will we be losing this wonderful venue, we will also be losing a wonderful Portsmouth landmark.
Why is Molly's gone?  Andrew Corbin, the former owner, told me that he was made an offer he couldn't refuse and it closed in record time.  … (5 comments)
