portsmouth: Porthsmouth Book Club June Meetup - Pride and Prejudice and Zombies - 05/12/10 01:25 AM
Tonight we discussed, "Book of Vice" by Peter Sagal and we expected a small turnout not because of the material but because of the number of RSVPs. However, it turned out to be a very large group for this particular group discussion which I was not prepared for! We had to bring out extra tables for all of the new people. I couldn't have anticipated a better evening. Many of us enjoyed Mr. Sagal's satryical point of views on naughty vices, but his words fell short on ears that had not before heard his tones and voice. I love Peter on his NPR

portsmouth: Portsmouth Book Club May Meetup - The Book of Vice - 04/13/10 11:42 PM
This evening we met at the Rosa in Portsmouth to discuss Little Bee by Chris Cleave. We had a great turn out, a huge group! I heard this book had the potential to create a good "back and forth" in a group discussion atmosphere, but I wasn't prepared for the intensely charged group, and our ensuing emotions, which we had this evening. In Little Bee, two young sisters are running for their lives from a group of men with machetes in Nigeria who have slaughtered their entire village, and family, for the sake of oil. They run and run until they reach the

portsmouth: The Portsmouth Book Club - February Pick - The Hunger Games - 01/30/10 12:44 AM
Last month we discussed, The Help, by Kathryn Stockett. Our group rallied around this book in unison and gave it the universal thumbs up. Although the book was heavily weighted in feminine character and thought (there wasn't one strong male character throughout), the men enjoyed this novel as equally as the women. For me it was a bit of a slow start, but once it got going, you just couldn't put it down. I was up until 3am one evening (morning!) finishing this book because I just had to find out what happened next. I have never understood how an author

portsmouth: Portsmouth, NH Book Club January Pick - The Help - 12/12/09 10:12 PM
In our last meeting we discussed The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. First, I would like to openly admit that I did not finish the book, although I am the meeting founder and coordinator. This usually does not happen. But what can I say? A) I'm human. B) I'm a full time real estate agent slash mom. And I had an extremely busy month. So let's leave it at that. This is one of the reasons I started my book club. There are many reasons, but one is the fact that I love to read but often lack the time. Book

portsmouth: The Portsmouth Book Club - December Pick - 11/17/09 01:33 PM
Our December pick for the Portsmouth Book Club is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Here is a brief synopsis from Barnes and Noble of The Book Thief: It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . . Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t

portsmouth: Portsmouth NH Sales Look Pretty Good - 08/05/09 03:46 PM
I just took a quick peek at the current Portsmouth real estate market on NNEREN. According to the stats, there are about 65 homes for sale in Portsmouth. And 25 other homes which are either contingent or pending! It looks like Portsmouth, NH will be having a good few months coming up. And I bet it will only get better and better, with more and more people taking advantage of the tax credit before it ends. This was one economic stimulus action which has been very helpful. Looking to sell your home? I am always available to help you sell a

portsmouth: Portsmouth NH Market Report - June 2009 - 07/09/09 12:43 AM
Residential - Single Family Homes I have not done a market report in a while because of the season, I have been very busy. In my last reports, I had been combining single family homes, condos and mobiles and in hindsight, I should not have been lumping them together since the prices on each particular type of property vary too much. Going forward, I will focus on single family homes as an economic indicator. PORTSMOUTH This first graph shows an intense monthly flux in the average sale price for a home in Portsmouth. The average price increased nearly $100k from May

portsmouth: The Portsmouth Book Club July Pick - Three Cups of Tea - 06/10/09 12:03 AM
Tonight we had our June meeting for the Portsmouth Book Club where we discussed, The Reader, by Bernhard Schlink. Our book club now has over 150 members! We have been growing like crazy. Who knew that we had that many fierce book lovers in Seacoast New Hampshire? I finally took a picture of one of our meetings with a few of our members who came this evening. It is a bit fuzzy. I am kneeling in the front row in blue. I have not seen the movie yet (which stars Kate Winslet), and I hear that the movie does justice

portsmouth: The Portsmouth Book Club June Pick - The Reader - 05/17/09 10:04 PM
Two Portsmouth Book Club Announcements! Annoucement One: Our June pick is, The Reader, by Bernhard Schlink. We will meet, as usual, on the second Tuesday of the month in June at 7pm. Here is a brief synopsis of the novel from the editor: "Set in postwar Germany, The Reader is a provocative, morally challenging, and deeply moving novel about a young boy's erotic awakening in a clandestine love affair with a mysterious older woman. Falling ill on his way home from school, 15-year-old Michael Berg is rescued by Hanna, a woman twice his age. For a time, the two become passionate

portsmouth: The Portsmouth Book Club May Pick - 04/15/09 08:04 PM
Last night we had our monthly book club meetup and as usual, it was a success. I believe I forgot to post our last book choice which was A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. We had a very interesting discussion on the book. I still liked his first book, The Kite Runner, the best - yet his new novel was just as gut wrenching, and just as thoughtful. I think that one of the best features of his books is how much Mr. Hosseini teaches us of the former Afghanistan and how enlightened the people had been before the Taliban

portsmouth: Portsmouth NH Market Report March 2009 - 04/03/09 01:53 PM
Portsmouth, NH Residential Real Estate Report for March, 2009 Residential - single family, condos and mobile homes. The average seeling price in Portsmouth for the month of March was $304,107, down a bit from February and March of last year. But don't let the decrease in market price get you down. Remember, this graph encompasses single family homes, condominiums (which are typically less expensive) and even manufactured homes. Now move on over to the next graph for the WOW factor. Now this is what we like to see! 14 homes sold in Portsmouth last month! Almost 3X more

portsmouth: Portmsouth NH Market Report February 2009 - 03/02/09 01:58 PM
The following report consists of all residential sales (single family homes, condominiums and mobile homes) in Portsmouth, NH. In February of 2009, the average selling price for a home in Portsmouth was $326,080, up quite a bit from the average selling price of $267,812 from the previous month. The reason for this HUGE variance is simply because of the number of listings sold. When so few homes are being sold, it is difficult for a real average sales price to be determined. Still, we can all take a little pride and smile when we see this huge price increase. The market

December's Portsmouth Business Connection is JAMIE BELILIAH - EUROPEAN SKIN CARE Click on the link to her website, you will be pretty impressed. Now, I am not the sort of person who regularly indulges in spa treatments. I don't have time, and I am a mom. But she did something so amazing, and I just can't believe it. I am

portsmouth: New Families and Growing Families in Seacoast NH - 10/29/08 11:26 PM
As a proud new-ish mother of an 18 month old precious boy, and as someone who is planning 'family addition number two' VERY soon, I understand the concern of families who are new and families who are growing. You start out with plenty of room. Then the new baby room takes place of the office. Toys accumulate left and right. You never knew you could accumulate so much STUFF. Your home used to be neat and tidy with everything in its place. But now walking through your home is like navigating the gauntlet. Trust me, I'm there. - Joshua - Our
