Administration Announces Changes to HAMP "The Obama administration has announced changes to its flagship foreclosure prevention initiative – the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP). Among the changes, borrowers who are struggling because of debt beyond their mortgage will be eligible for a secondary evaluation with more flexible debt-to-income criteria, and eligibility will be extended to investor-owned homes that are used as rental properties. Foreclosure Filings Fall To 49-Month Low - 01/19/12 12:33 PM

Foreclosure filings are fewer these days, according to foreclosure-tracking firm RealtyTrac.
In December 2011, the number of foreclosure filings nationwide fell 9 percent from the month prior. Not since November 2007 has foreclosure activity been this sparse across the country.
The drop does not appear to be seasonal, either.

With many homeowners currently underwater with their mortgages, many are turning to a "Strategic Default" in these hard economic times. A Strategic Default is when a homeowner owes more on their mortgage than the property is currently worth, and they simply turn over the keys to the home and walk away.
This move, while difficult economically by causing blemishes on credit reports etc.,  is also posing ethical questions. Is it morally wrong to pack up and leave a home one still owes money on?

News for the Unemployed with Mortgages... - 01/09/12 03:28 PM
Fannie Mae recently announced that they may have relief offered for those who are currently unemployed and have mortgages through them or Freddie Mac. Those eligible could have a up to 12 months of reprieve from paying their mortgage, or a reduced payment.
Freddie currently allows up to 6 months for the unemployed, however with the unemployment rates ever increasing -- this increase in forgiveness period may be a relief for many!
