real estate agents: Locks and More Locks - 08/07/07 06:30 AM
Not many of us have skeleton keys for our main entry door anymore.  My key ring has one which fits my office door.  A young whipper snapper might not recognize this funny contraption as a key were it not for cartoons.
The joke among my clients is that gaining access to the house is the hardest part of my job.  The primary means of access is through keys that fit in locks.  In the same vein, the assumption is that real estate agents know how to use a key in a lock!
Last week a frantic call came from one of my listings.  … (2 comments)

real estate agents: Falling Down - 08/01/07 08:15 PM
Last weekend I drove across the Mississippi and looked upstream.  The bridges were so beautiful I thought I should take a picture.  The light was right and the weather perfect for a stroll across the bridge.  My schedule, however, was packed and I chose to come back another day.  That day will not come now because one of the bridges in my picture no longer spans the Mississippi.
Today that bridge lies IN the Mississippi.  Lying in the river is not the way bridges are supposed to be, but this one had a flaw.  It was broken and couldn't do its … (4 comments)

real estate agents: One Bad Apple - 04/17/07 08:35 AM
"We should all be doing what we can to build up our public image remembering that we never elevate ourselves when we try to tear others down."
The above quote is from a man of great wisdom, Hank Kindall, a RE/MAX agent in Lynnwood, Washington, and a member of RealTalk.
It's a subtle distinction to recognize that by criticizing another, one is not making oneself look better, but is pulling oneself down with the person you are denigrating.  Such a simple truth, but so hard to remember.  I don't want that one bad apple's reputation to drag mine down with it!
I'm all … (7 comments)

real estate agents: REALTOR® Reputation - 03/05/07 10:27 AM
Back in my Master's program days, there was a class on "hidden" messages that made a huge impact on me.  I hadn't thought about the messages behind the illustrations on billboards, posters, TV ads, etc.  I just subliminally accepted the messages without question.  As the layers of impact these pictures made on we humans was peeled away, a whole new world of "impressions" opened up for me.
In like manner, the written word often has an impact the writer doesn't necessarily intend.  In my own struggle to find what separates me from other agents (precipitated by my broker who wanted me to … (14 comments)

real estate agents: If the Public Only Knew What They Don't Know - 11/13/06 03:02 PM

An exercise in fantasy thinking for wishful thinkers!

If the Public only knew what they don't know:
They would not call the company listed on the "for sale" sign in front of the house to arrange for a showing of that house. They would interview agents to find out who takes agency seriously instead of who was cheapest.Every home buyer would get an agent to represent them because it doesn't cost the buyer anything! There would be a hue and cry for commission reform so each client would pay their own brokerage.Agency disclosures would be taken seriously.Contracts for representation would be taken even more seriously.Agents would … (17 comments)
