austin texas: Finding history and art in Austin Texas is easy if you know where to look. - 05/18/09 12:06 PM
Growing up in a large metropolitan city like Houston I spent many weekends in the multitude of museums Houston had to offer. There is no better way to beat the brutal Houston summer heat, than in the cool air of a museum drinking in the art. Newcomers to Austin often ask where is the Austin museum district? I want to go see some art and there does not seem to be any in Austin. To them I say you just have to look for it. It is all around Austin. To make things easier for the newly relocated individuals I

austin texas: New proposed laws in Texas regarding your pets. It's only a bill now so do what you can - 05/16/09 10:47 AM
As a pet owner for over thirty years in Texas I try to stay on top of issues that affect my pets. That said, my last three dogs came from local rescue organizations, Schnauzer Rescue of Texas to be specific. The reason I am writing is to let you know there was a recent bill (SB 1845) introduced to require all pet owners to spay and neuter their pets. When/if this is passed into a law they anticipate the permit fee will be about $300 per pet. If you don't apply for and receive a permit to keep your pet fertile, you could be

austin texas: Polo, it's not just for horses anymore - 05/16/09 10:16 AM
Everyone has probably seen a polo match. Several people on horseback swinging a mallet at a little ball racing to a goal. Well it is no longer just for horses and people. There will be two polo matches today in Austin for Dogs! You heard me right, the Texas Hearing and Service Dog organization is hosting the 3rd Annual "Polo for Puppies", it is a polo match to raise money for their cause. Their cause is a good one to be sure. They provide and train service dogs to assist the hearing impaired and disabled people. These dogs are provided to those

austin texas: I woke up today to shocking bad news from the Texas Employment Commission - 03/07/09 08:40 AM
This post may not be popular with some people, however people need to know Austin is not immune from the current economic downturn. Normally I wake up and read the Austin American Statesman newspaper with my coffee and then get my Active Rain fix. Today's headline gave me a shock. The front page headline read Austins job-less rate is now at a five year high. The Texas Workforce Commission just released the dreaded news this Thursday. Historically our unemployment rate has been somewhere around three percent. Right now it has shot up to about six and a half percent. We have not seen

austin texas: NewFlower Farmers Market, Seriously good for you food at silly prices - 02/27/09 01:15 PM
For several months I have been hearing about the newest grocery store to open in south Austin. My husband is in the natural food business, so I hear about new organic products light years before they hit the shelves. The new kid in town is the New Flower Farmers Market. The founder of New Flower Farmers Market is Mike Gilliland, he was an owner of Wild Oats Natural Food Stores before they were purchased by their biggest competitor last year. I am excited about the grand opening of the New Flower Farmers Market. It is on the corner of William Cannon and Manchaca. This

austin texas: Check out what the Top Ten "most searched cities" are on Trulia.... - 01/21/09 08:33 AM
There are several sites that the public can search for homes online. One of the most popular with consumers is Trulia. I have often wondered where consumers are looking at homes. Recently I saw that Trulia had started compiling records of where people are searching for homes. So they have created a list of the top ten cities that consumers searched in 2008. Please note they did not release the actual number of visitors to the site for each city, they only posted the list of cities in order of rank. As usual Austin is solidly in the top ten!
