humboldt county: No Time for Wishful Pricing - New York Times Advises to Price Your Home Competitively to Attract Buyers - 11/04/08 08:35 PM
"ALMOST any calamity may seem possible in the current real estate market, besieged as it is by capricious and unpredictable economic forces. But if you’re selling, there is one certitude to cling to, at least if you believe brokers: Those needing to make a sale can’t afford to start out with a wishfully high asking price.." This is how the current article in the New York times starts out. To read the entire article click here...No Time for Wishful Pricing It's hard when you are a seller in Humboldt County California and you were hoping to sell for $50,000 more than

humboldt county: Even When Faced with a Down Market Always Look for the Opportunity - 10/25/08 02:54 PM
If there's anything I have learned from my friends and family it's the reminder that even when we're faced with a down market we should always be looking for the opportunity. My great grandfather was an immigrant who had moved here from Russia in his early 20’s and soon after sent for my great grandmother. When he finally set foot on American soil, he was determined to succeed in this country…to live the American Dream. All I can remember from the rest of his story is that my great grandfather sought out opportunity during a time when many Americans barely were able

humboldt county: You May Get Less House for the $$$ in Humboldt County CA Than in Kentucky - But it's All Relative - 09/27/08 03:12 AM
I just read Liz Moras's most recent post in the rain, It's Just a Matter of Perspective Isn't It? An Elephant Story. She has some great insight definitely check out the blog. But it inspired me to take this concept of "Perspectives" in a different direction. It definitely got me thinking about how we seem to compare markets and that can cloud our perspective. The best example I can give you is housing prices. A 1500 square foot home in excellent condition might sell for say $700,000 or more in Santa Cruz CA (yes, even in today's market). However, here in

humboldt county: Humboldt County Ca, A Great Travel Destination According to the New York Times - 09/19/08 07:19 PM
It's great to see that the New York Times thinks Humboldt County California is a great place to travel to. I love when we hit national news. It's just fun to see that we really aren't as remote as people think we are. Because as far as I'm concerned Humboldt County is one of California's best kept secrets for affordable coastal living, and outdoor attractions: 1) Walk for miles on many of our untouched (undeveloped) beaches or get adventurous and head to some of the more rockier shores North of Eureka. 2) The great Ancient Redwoods are always inspiring. 3) Water

humboldt county: Eureka California Chosen as One of the "2008 Best Towns" in Outside Magazine - 09/12/08 04:55 PM
It's cool to know that Eureka California had been chosen as one of the "2008 Best Towns" in Outside magazine! Check out the article: Eureka California 2008 Best Town to visit and move to A few months ago I got a call from Katie Arnold, one of Outside Magazine's writers asking me for information about the Eureka California Real Estate Market, because Eureka California was chosen as one of the best towns to live in this year and she wanted to know more about the area, the economy, the general Humboldt County California Real Estate Market and what else our community

humboldt county: Being a Humboldt County Tour Guide this Labor Day- I Always Discover Something New! - 09/03/08 05:33 PM
My brother in-law and his wife came to visit my husband and I this past Labor Day weekend and it was such a pleasure to take them around and show them some of the highlights of Humboldt County. I can't tell you how many times I have done this for out of town friends and family. And I have so much fun revisiting some of the same spots that make Humboldt County so special. Sometimes I discover something new on my tour guiding adventures. On Saturday, we started off by visiting the Farmer's Market on the Arcata Plaza. Both Nate and

humboldt county: Remodeling an Older Home in Humboldt County? Keep in Mind Who Your Future Buyer Will Be. - 08/25/08 06:58 PM
If you are one of many homeowners out there thinking of doing some serious remodeling project on your charming old home let me give you a few things to keep in mind before you push ahead on your project. 1) Be sensitive to what you update: Keep some of the items that make your old home charming - like older windows (especially those with stain glass in them), old wood siding, interior and exterior window trim, other decorative trim inside and outside your home, high ceilings, older beat up floors and antique hardware, to name a few. There are

humboldt county: I'm Not Here to Sell You a Home in Humboldt County CA - 07/29/08 07:02 PM
I'm really not here to just sell you a home in Humboldt County CA. As a buyer's agent for home buyers looking to buy a home here the sales process is not like buying a car from a dealership or a brand new washer and dryer from Sears. Usually the search process is quick, the sale is fast and you never see your sales person again. In home buying it's different. Your buyer's agent is there for you from the very beginning and usually the relationship (if you have a good buyer's agent) doesn't end after the sale. A good agent

humboldt county: It's Not All Doom and Gloom - Staying Positive and Building Your Skills in a Down Market - 06/18/08 07:08 PM
Our market in Humboldt County has been changing. Maybe not as dramatically as in some cities in California like Stockton for instance, where they have foreclosures (bank owned properties) coming out of their ears, but never the less our market is changing. Inventory is up and the number of buyers ready, willing and able to buy a home, has dropped. And of course with all this change comes doom and gloom articles from the media which doesn't necessarily paint a realistic picture of what's happening here locally in Humboldt County's cities like Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville, Trinidad, Fortuna and Ferndale. So many

humboldt county: 40th Annual Kinetic Grand Championship - One of the Wackiest Events in Humboldt County - 05/26/08 03:00 PM
You know summer is around the corner when the Kinetic Grand Championship kicks off at the Arcata Plaza at High Noon on Saturday, Memorial Day Weekend. There were between 8,000 to 10,000 spectators waiting to cheer their favorite Kinetic Sculpture teams on. This is a 3-day race through an insane race course that started at the Arcata Plaza and ends in downtown Ferndale. Today racers are on their way to the finish line in Ferndale, California as I write this post. So for those of you who know nothing about the Kinetic Grand Championship (originally named the Kinetic Sculpture Race -

humboldt county: Arcata Farmer's Market, A Great Place to Meet Friends - 05/20/08 11:21 AM
I know spring is right around the corner when the Arcata Farmer's Market starts up in April. It's by far one of the largest farmer's markets in Humboldt County and a great place to bump into some of those friends you haven't seen all winter long. Every Saturday morning from 9am to 2pm, local organic farmers from all over Humboldt County come together on the Arcata Plaza to sell us fresh fruits and vegetables, literally harvested that morning. Plus around 10am the music starts. Each Saturday there is a different local band that will serenade you while you're shopping for Saturday's

humboldt county: Does Your Local Chamber of Commerce Events Bring you Business? - 05/16/08 07:51 PM
"Business Networking Events are not worth your time because you meet other people who are jobless and just there to look for a new employer." This is what many of the networking articles and books mention. If you're building relationships than you need to go to other community volunteer events where you really can get to know someone better because you share something in common...your passion for that organization or event you're involved in together. Now that may be true in most cases, but not in Eureka California. I'm a Eureka Chamber Ambassador for the Eureka Chamber of Commerce and

humboldt county: Heat Wave Hits Humboldt County California - 05/15/08 10:58 PM
I don't know about you, but where I live in Eureka, CA it was just plain HOT today. We had record temperatures all over Humboldt County as a matter of fact. The highest temperature recorded was around 109 degrees and that was inland. But even in Eureka and Arcata (our coastal towns) the temperature reached 94 degrees Fahrenheit. Since we live so close to the ocean up here in Northern California, our average temperatures in the summer aren't even this high. We usually average around 60-65 degrees during spring and summer and maybe get as hot as 80 degrees on occasion.

humboldt county: NBC Today Show's Desperate Landscapes Contest - And the Winner is.... - 05/08/08 04:56 PM
For some of you who read or commented on my post yesterday Fortuna Couple Compete for Yard Makeover... many of you wanted to know if our lucky couple won today's competition on the Today Show. Well first of all it was cool to watch. There were four competing (the husband's competed, wives stood on the sidelines), each husband teamed up with one of the Today show hosts - Mark Marquez, our Fortuna homeowner, teamed up with Matt Lauer. There were 4 obstacles each team had to accomplish and of course the first team to finish won! 1) Obstacle One - Laying down the

humboldt county: Fortuna Couple Compete for Yard Makeover on NBC's Today Show - We're hitting big time now! - 05/07/08 10:28 AM
This is just too cool. This morning as I went out to get the Eureka Reporter, and I found this story on the front page of the paper. Since we live way up in Northern California on the coast, just a 2 hour drive south of the Oregon border, we don't usually get national media coverage(unless it has something to do with PALCO and tree sitters), but a Fortuna couple is changing that. Mark and Mandy Marquez are the first couple in Humboldt County to compete in any national Home/Yard makeover contest. They were chosen to be finalists, out of 10,000 entries.

Happy April Fool's Day! Ok, I'll start. When I was the promotion's director for Humboldt County's local radio stations, KHUM, KSLG and KWPT (The Point), every April Fools we did something creative to throw off our listeners. Before I tell you the two April Fools Joke's the station pulled, let me give you a little background on each station. KHUM is a progressive radio station with all live DJs who get to choose the music you get to hear. The selection is very eclectic ranging from blues, jazz, bluegrass, international to pop music.
