THE PIRATE JEAN LAFITTE WAS REALLY MORTIMER WILSON - 05/31/07 10:38 PM
Galveston's Pirate Jean Lafitte Was a Fraud. He Was Really Mortimer Wilson By Bill Cherry, Dallas Broker-Realtor www.billcherrybroker.com www.texasescapes.com It is entirely possible that the real Jean Lafitte never sailed into or had a home in Galveston. But that depends on whose accounting of Lafitte's life you want to believe. The real Jean Lafitte was one of two brothers. Jean was the elder and Pierre was the younger. They were probably born in St. Malos, France in the 1780s. Jean was described as "tall, finely formed, and in his pleasant mood was always agreeable and interesting. He would stand for

READ THIS GUY'S BLOG. YOU'LL LEARN SOMETHING - 05/30/07 08:52 AM
One of our fellow real estate bloggers is a fellow named Steven Shewell. He calls himself the Mortgage Maverick. Nice looking young fellow, good smile and with a character actor's moustache. His picture's by his blog. You can find him without much of an effort. Well, he's gone to a great deal of trouble to write a very specific set of lessons he calls "5 Strategies to Grow Your Business." There's probably more information there than you'd ever get from The Donald, even if you followed him around for half of a lifetime. Print out Steven's treatise, think about it, and put it into

WOW! Check out Amadeus Metalworks, Dallas - 05/29/07 02:34 PM
Meet me on the web at www.billcherrybroker.com From time to time architectural iron sculpture is the perfect accoutrement to creating a home's architectural being -- the interior stair balustrade, a period designed fence, an iron statuary -- all artistic to dream up and even more artistic to create out of iron, metal and sometimes with the addition of precious and semi-precious stones. We have come across the most talented metalworks shop when we compare it to all of those we have interviewed and used over the many years we have been adaptively restoring 18th and 19th century iron front commercial buildings in the

SOMEONE IS THINKING ABOUT YOU AT THIS VERY MOMENT.... - 05/28/07 07:27 PM
Throughout most of my life, I've been one of those who keeps in contact with friends. Those I grew up with, those who moved away, those I went to college with, old girlfriends, clients...everyone. I suppose I'm sort of the Joel Osteen of real estate. My message to my friends is always basically the same: How are things going for you? Is there anything I can do for you to help make things better? And if there is, I do my best to make sure that it happens. Today, I got an email from my friend Vivian Webb Latimer. She and her

"WE SAVED $48,000! THANKS, BRAND X!" - 05/28/07 01:51 PM
Last evening I saw a television commercial for one of the national discount broker franchises, "Brand X." The couple is sitting in their living room, and they say in "25 words or less" that the sale of their house with that franchise broker saved them, if memory serves me, more than $48,000. It troubles me that these commercials are allowed to be used when they come with none of the pertinent facts. If I were the God of Ethics, I would say without a second thought that they are in serious violation, and I'd pull their membership in the

PART 2: A SEQUAL: THE KOREAN WAR HERO WHO SWUNG THE BOARD OF EDUCATION - 05/27/07 06:28 AM
LT. COL. RICHARD H. SCHIEBEL The Korean War Hero Who Swung the Board of Education at Ball High By Bill Cherry, Dallas Broker-Realtor My 43rd Year Serving Texans If any of the students at Galveston's Ball High School knew he was Lt. Col. Richard H. Schiebel, a Korean War hero, who in the years before had flown an F-51 all through the war zone, successfully completing 100 missions against the enemy, they didn't talk about it. Perhaps it was no big thing. For after all, except for less than a handful of years, war had been with us for our

Unless you know all four stanzas of the Star Spangled Banner you may find this most interesting. Perhaps most of you didn't realize what Francis Scott Key's profession was or what he was doing on a ship. This is a good brush-up on your history. This was sent to me this evening by my high school coach, Col. Richard Schiebel, 80-plus years old who is a war hero who flew many missions. Here's his picture in his plane: COL. RICHARD E. LOOK AT DALLAS' NORTH PARK - 05/26/07 06:56 PM
Meet me on the web at www.billcherrybroker.com When Raymond Nasher and his wife conceived the idea of the now famous Dallas enclosed mall, NorthPark, there were only three similar to it in the United States. And we're talking about the late 1950s. NorthPark opened in 1965. Mr. Nasher passed away a few weeks ago in his mid-80s. Within the next couple of days, I'm going to tell you the story of Mr. Nasher and his NorthPark. Prior to that, this would be the perfect time for Dallasites -- especially those who are commercial real estate brokers and investors -- to take a day and

THE SECRET LESSON TO SPREAD TO NEW GRADUATES, AND YOU, TOO. - 05/23/07 02:47 PM
www.billcherrybroker.com The Mentor's Formula to be Educated As the end of May approaches every year, I doubt I have ever failed to remember Arthur L. Graham, who, although a speech and drama teacher and a student counselor at Galveston's Ball High School for ever and a day, was the highly regarded mentor to many generations of students. I was one of them. He insisted that to be well-rounded and educated, you had to subscribe to and read The New Yorker magazine, at least the Sunday edition of the New York Times (especially the theater section), and the now-defunct Norman Cousins' magazine,

BILL CHERRY, REALTORS PREPARING A HOME TO SELL IS NOW KNOWN AS STAGING By Bill Cherry, Dallas Broker Realtor My 43rd Year Representing Texans Meet me on the web at www.billcherrybroker.com Some years ago, I was a principal in a Houston company that built garden apartments, sold them to JMB Realty in Chicago, and retained the contract with them to lease and manage the properties. Bill Cherry, Dallas Realtor My 43rd Year Representing Texans 972 380-7347 Meet me on the web at www.billcherrybroker.com There is a very interesting article about a new way burglars are using to pick locks. It's on the web at http://money.aol.com/bankrate/realestate/canvas3/_a/how-to-protect-your-home-against-lock/20070509133809990002 It points out that our conventional cylinder locks are no longer much of a problem for even teenagers to pick. They need 100 bucks to buy several plastic picks. The one that fist in the specific lock is the one they stick in it. Then they strike it with a rubber mallet and whammo. They are inside your house. "ANOTHER HOUSE SOLD BY X," SHE SAID -- BUT IT JUST AIN'T TRUE - 05/18/07 01:26 PM
Bill Cherry, Dallas Realtor My 43rd Year 972 380-7347 cherrysells@aol.com Real estate sales and marketing is such a peculiar business. And it's often a business of inference and half-truths. Over the past six months or so, I've watched the most interesting pattern. A longtime agent with one of the large real estate firms got a listing in Lake Highlands. It was near my house, so when the sign went up, I checked to see what the particulars were. There was no question in my mind that the agent had under priced the house by at least $20,000. We're talking about a house that

It appears that the real estate market throughout the country may now be beginning to cool off. Whether it's actually happening or not is not worthy of debate, since prospective Buyers are beginning to perceive it to be the case. So while these changing dynamics have implications for us all, they especially impact those planning to

WORRIES OF THE DALLAS MC MANSION EXPANSION HAVE ARRIVED - 05/16/07 08:59 PM
Bill Cherry Realtor Dallas, Texas My 43rd Year Meet me on the web at www.billcherrybroker.com The Dallas McMansion expansion has lots of lenders and financial advisors worried. At issue: young people with high incomes but no savings taking on massive mortgage debt. They come with a Pollyanna attitude that they will never be out of work, never be faced with a financial emergency, and that there will be someone ready to pay them much more for the house when they are ready to sell it. The real estate boom has made what used to be called exotic loans such as interest-only mortgages or

By Bill Cherry, Realtor Since 1964 I'll bet at least once a week Patty and I would get a postcard or letter from her, with her picture and all, telling us what a spectacular job she had done selling other expensive homes in the beautiful community we loved and lived in near Houston. The color photo of her with the toothy grin showed her to be an attractive woman about forty. We didn't know her. She wanted us to be her next clients, that is (in very small print) if we didn't already have our home listed with someone else. And then she added

Bill Cherry, Dallas Broker-Realtor My 43rd Year Selling Texas Meet me on the web at www.billcherrybroker.com One of the most passionate of the concerns of families moving into a new town is making certain they have unbiased information about the various opportunities that are available for educating their children. Over and above which public schools have the best programs for their children's talents and passions, in Dallas, at least, there is also a large litany of private schools that should be considered. Some religious-backed, others secular. Some terribly expensive, others are not. Some focus on liberal educations and college preparatory. Others

THE NEIMAN-MARCUS FORMULA ACCORDING TO MR. STANLEY - 05/14/07 08:07 AM

In fact, Mr. Marcus, who was called Mr. Stanley by most people, wrote several books on the subject, including Minding the Store and Quest for the Best. Both are still available in excellent but

CBS and "60 Minutes" Bash Conventional Realtors Again - 05/13/07 08:30 PM
By Bill Cherry Dallas Realtor-Broker My 43rd Year Serving Texans Meet me on the web at www.billcherrybroker.com Tonight, Sunday, May 13, 2007, "60 Minutes'" Leslie Stahl filed another report that insinuated that buyers and sellers of homes would be better off if they were to use an Internet broker like Seattle's Redfin. I have never found it particularly difficult to refute these arguments and what the supporters use as evidence, but it is rather impossible when only one side is presented, as was Ms. Stahl's stance. I found this one-sided presentation terribly offensive. Her report boiled down to this: The Internet brokers want

Trinity Episcopal Church, Galveston Founded in 1857 Churches Have Been Doing Their Best to Mask Financial Troubles By Bill Cherry Meet me on the web at www.billcherrybroker.com While there's reason to question whether it's academically theological, one rather consistent message Western religions infer in their teachings boils down to this: Don't worry about It. As long as we pray about It, we can leave It in God's hands, and everything will be alright. Many find it troubling to drive by their city's old churches, some ornate and opulent, others designed and built to be clean, pristine and sturdy, and to realize that for years those buildings
