THE INCOME TAX REBATE - WHY IT WILL ACTUALLY HELP - 02/29/08 11:00 PM
From the beginning of time - well not for that long, but at least from the mid-1700s -- those who studied and postulated on the pseudo-science of economics were sure that the whole thing could be summed up in two laws: The Law of Supply and Demand, and The Law of Diminishing Returns. The idea was that no extraneous thoughts or encouragements from the outside could influence or change the inevitable. Those who bought into this theory, and those who buy into it today, are what many of us call neo-classical economists. But it is difficult to rationally discount that (4 comments)
MADAM PRESIDENT'S PRESIDENTIAL EXHIBIT -- DALLAS - 02/29/08 11:33 AM
Over the years, she's gained the nickname of Madam President. Her true name is Gerry Hunter, and while she's an octogenarian, I promise you'd never guess it if you saw her. Madam President got her name because she's devoted two rooms in her home to a collection of memorbelia celebrating the lives and presidency of every U.S. president, beginning with George Washington. She has other collections throughout her home as well. Teachers, Sunday school classes, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Campfire girls, and just moms and dads and grandparents bring children by to see these exhibits. And Madam President always has her special (2 comments)

SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH DALLAS REALTOR BILL CHERRY, 19th Edition - 02/23/08 10:31 PM
What a glorious Dallas day. Easter weather is beginning to take an embryonic shape as the days get longer, the sun is out more frequently, and the squirrels are acting like circus performers as they dive from tree to tree. Thanks for stopping by for our weekly after-church visit here in the park. PRAYER. I accidentally heard a radio commentator last evening as she told of a new study regarding marriage and prayer. It found that when husband and wife pray out loud together on a daily basis, the chance of them divorcing diminishes from 50% to 20%. And it doesn't seem to (2 comments)
HOW A DALLAS MAN TURNS ONE-TIME BUYERS INTO LIFETIME CUSTOMERS - 02/21/08 09:37 AM
Dallasites, whether from generations back or having just moved here, are familiar with the car dealerships that have the Sewell branding. It's a brand that's been in business for a long time, and appears to be "the country's largest luxury-car dealer." Through almost two hands full of stores, they sell Lexus, Hummer, Cadillac, Pontiac, Saab, GMC, and I almost forgot Infiniti. When Carl Sewell acquired the business from his dad some years ago, he decided that he would step-up the business plan. His business would consciously provide such an excellence in customer service that it would "turn that one-time buyer into a lifetime (9 comments)
My friend Robert Lacquement, a proud Marine and a retired railroad employee, sent me this. I want to note that Robert left his wife Ruthie at home and went to New Orleans to help the Katrina victims. He spends his weekends as a volunteer Coast Guard sailor, pulling people out of the water and towing drunk fishermen ashore, who, as night has begun to fall, have lost their way home in their boats. He's with Ruthie every Sunday at their church. And he is always volunteering to help someone in need. There are a lot of men like Robert Lacquement. You rarely hear (0 comments)
MY SIGN OF THE TIMES - 02/18/08 10:02 AM
A few years before Patty and I left Galveston Island for Dallas, I sold my company offices in Galveston, in the Island's resort-second home community, and the one in the Museum District of Houston. I primarily needed a breather from managing people and paying bills, so I became a sole practitioner. I thought you'd like to see the sign that hung under the canope of the four story 19th Century building where I moved my office. Note the name of the company. I figured that in order to add an employee or agent, I'd have to spend the money to change the name. (9 comments)
AGNOSTICISM- THE REAL SIGN OF PSEUDO-INTELLECTUALS - 02/17/08 10:08 PM
I know of nothing I personally feel is more intellectually bankrupt that agnosticism. Many can't bring themselves to say they are agnostics, but they are, and I'm personally tired of the pseudo-intellectualism displays they want me to buy into on their behalf. If you'll recall, an agnostic is a person who says he hasn't decided whether there is a God or not. He takes no position. It's a wait and see approach. An atheist, on the other hand, has made up his mind. For him, God doesn't exist. It's not that I find the concept of agnosticism unforgivable, it's the lazy way most (5 comments)
SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH DALLAS REALTOR BILL CHERRY, 18th Edition - 02/16/08 09:22 PM
Even though it's been a rainy cold weekend here in Dallas, joining you in the coffee shop gazebo across from the park for our regular Sunday after church visit is still a great way to start the week. I woke up this morning thinking about Galveston, an island off of the coast of Texas where I was born and spent the majority of my life. As Easter approaches, so do the sun drenched beaches, the smell of the salty Gulf of Mexico waters and sand mixed with the odor of Coppertone sun tan lotion. That all suits me just fine because to (10 comments)
REALTOR JENNIFER LETS NO GRASS GROW BETWEEN HER TOES. - 02/16/08 04:40 AM
So you wouldn't have to, I just looked it up. Dripping Springs, Texas, is a small town in the Austin, Texas hill country. That being said, let me now begin. Yesterday I mused about PTAs -- Parent Teacher Associations -- in my blog. Jennifer Wright, a fellow-Realtor in Dripping Springs, attached a comment. Seems to me it ought to be a stand alone blog, so I'm posting it for all to see. Comment by Jennifer Wright, REALTOR Dripping Springs, TX: Bill - Rest assured to know that PTA is alive and thriving in Dripping Springs, Texas! As a proud member in 3 local school PTA (4 comments)
IT'S TIME TO LOOK AGAIN AT THE PTA! - 02/15/08 08:52 AM
While Patty and I were having our first cup and first of the day chat this morning, I asked her if the Parent Teacher Association was still a dependable foundation-member of public education. Were there still a lot of parents involved? It was on my mind because a couple of hours before I had dreamed of being in about the fourth grade at William B. Travis Elementary School, and members of the PTA were orchestrating Valentine's Day parties in each of the classrooms. The Messrs. Boldman, Jordan, Tramonte, Green, Jones and my own mother were among others who were helping my class (5 comments)
REVERSE MORTGAGES - THE SUB-PRIME TRAGEDY FOR THE ELDERLY - 02/13/08 08:47 PM
Companies and people in the lending business never give up, and it's why strict banking regulations are as important now as the world found out they were when they analytically determined the reasons for the Great Depression. Nevertheless, those regulations have been relaxed, some by interpretation, others by changes. Many, including me, think we are on the way to a new set of financial tragedies. The sub-prime loans have ripped to shreds the financial present and future of thousands of young Americans, and the scars will remain with them for a lifetime. For many it will be the same as the stories that are still told about a (0 comments)
SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH DALLAS REALTOR BILL CHERRY, 17th Edition - 02/09/08 11:06 PM
Thanks for stopping by for our weekly Sunday after church meeting here in the park. It's so nice to see you. I was just thinking about why Sunday trips to the park are so important to me. They remind me of when I was a little boy during the War years. After Sunday school, during the spring, my daddy would bring me here so I could swing, ride the merry-go-around, and go down the slide a zillion times. And then we'd go to the ice cream factory just about three blocks away, and get a freshly made ice cream sandwich. We'd sit on (11 comments)
BUD BUSCHARDT AND HIS DALLAS LEGEND - 02/08/08 11:42 AM
If you've eaten at TGI Friday's or seen any nostalgia movies or TV programs, or if you've listened to the various music programs broadcasted by the ABC Radio Network, you've been touched by my friend Bud Buschardt. Bud has one of the largest catalogued record collections in the world. There are more than 100,000 of those babies. They are in specially built open cases that line almost every closet in his home plus every wall -- floor to ceiling -- in his home control room that overlooks one of the most Tony neighborhoods of Dallas. It's from that enormous collection and (8 comments)
MORTGAGE MARKET "COLLAPSE" IS NOT REALLY THE PROBLEM - 02/07/08 09:31 AM
Much is being made about the prospects of a pending recession. Politicians, media and some business people and economist are making every effort to build a case that charges the mortgage lenders, whose credit underwriting parameters are thought to have been too lax. In some effort to make citizens feel good, and at the same time in hopes of heading off a recession, congress has plans of sending every taxpayer a check. It also is putting in place a mechanism to reduce the number of projected foreclosures. While these are both important and need addressing, the real culprit, the one that is doing (10 comments)
MY TELEPHONE RANG AT WORLD HEADQUARTERS. I WISH YOU'D HAVE BEEN THERE TO SPEAK WITH THE WOMAN. - 02/05/08 09:26 PM
One recent evening I got a call from a woman. She didn't identify herself, but her question was where she could go to find out what houses were going to be foreclosed. I asked her if she thought hers was going to be one of them. <<--BILL CHERRY REALTORS, WORLD HEADQUARTERS "No, sir," she said, "I want to go buy a couple of them, fix them up and sell them." She went on to tell me that she had seen a program on TV about how easy it is to do that and get rich, and had bought the fellow's books and DVDs. I (15 comments)

Today I want to recommend to you the biographical sketch of Stephen Schwarzman that was written for the February 5th edition of The New Yorker Magazine. It was written by James Stewart. You can read all eleven pages of it for no charge by clicking here. Blackstone invests money in somewhat exotic, but nevertheless, carefully selected and monitored securities. Mr. Schwarzman is apparently worth several billion dollars. DALLAS HOMES - REALTOR BILL CHERRY - 02/03/08 07:30 AM
Many of those who ran the big braggadocios ads about their Dallas real estate sales expertise are evaporating into thin air. In reality, their real estate prowess was nothing more than an aberration. Honest to goodness, it was just an aberration. Would you believe that some of them have scores of Park Cities listings that have gone unsold for months and months? How'd you like to be the owner who's stuck with a 2 million buck mansion that your agent with the big new Lexus and hair-do from Osgood O'Neil can't sell? Have you tried to get her off of the Blackberry (4 comments)
SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH REALTOR BILL CHERRY, 16th Edition - 02/02/08 09:17 PM
Thanks for stopping by for our regular after church visit here in the park. This is the last Sunday before Christians begin observing the traditions of Lent. Life insurance names the beneficiaries, bank accounts can (8 comments)
THIS DALLAS REALTOR DOES PRIVATE TITLE CLOSINGS FOR HIS CLIENTS - 02/02/08 12:25 AM
For as long as I've been in business, many of my clients have never gone to a title company office to close their half of the transaction. I handle the closing for the title company in my private office, in the client's home, and frequently at their own office desk. Frankly there are very few of us who do this. Licensing requirements have not focused on abstract and title issues in many years. In some states, they never have. Things were different in Texas in the '60s. Back when I was first studying real estate in the University of North Texas Business School in the early (4 comments)
