american national insurance co: THE GHOST OF A PAST CHRISTMAS - 12/23/11 12:24 PM
(This piece is my Christmas Day column for The Galveston County Daily News and Texas Escapes Magazine.) A Ghost of a Past Christmas By Bill Cherry The Christmas of 1980 was a hard one for my family. On December 17, 1980 without any warning, my daddy passed away two months before his seventy-second birthday. I couldn’t believe it. Everyone is supposed to recover from their first heart attack, I thought. How could this be? While my daddy’s full name was William Wallace Cherry, he had signed his name as W.W. Cherry on thousands of documents. Probably only the IRS

american national insurance co: A GREAT PARADOX OF THE MARRIAGE OF BUSINESS WITH HIGHER EDUCATION - 01/13/11 07:37 PM
There's a piece that's being sent around from friend to friend by email. Perhaps you've seen it. It compares U.S. citizens who are not under national health care with citizens of other countries who are. It takes one health problem after another, compares the quickness of treatment in the US with the slowness of treatment in the other countries. At the bottom, it takes each recent presidential administration and shows the percentage of those who were members of the administration who had experience working in the private sector before they became bureaucrats. It alleges that Mr. Obama's administration reaches 8%, the lowest

american national insurance co: E. DOUGLAS MC LEOD - DEAN FOR THE DAY - MARCH 14, 2008 - 03/21/08 11:42 PM
The announcement came in last week's mail. It was from the South Texas College of Law in Houston. On March 14, 2008, my life long friend, E. Douglas McLeod, was named the college's Dean for the Day. That's quite an honor, but it's very definitely one that's properly placed and noted. <<=== E. DOUGLAS MC LEOD I've written before about Doug along with my friends Victor, J.E. and Ward. We've been a support team for a long time. Far more than fifty years. Here's that story. In real life Doug is the Director of Development for the billion dollar Moody (Charitable) Foundation. And he's an officer

american national insurance co: SUNDAY IN THE PARK, 10th Edition by Bill Cherry - 12/23/07 11:21 AM
Thanks for visiting with me this Sunday in the Park. With Christmas two days away, as we sit here together, I can't help but be appreciative that my mom and dad made certain that as a family our religious beliefs and our church were stable parts of our life together. You know, for Christians, Christmastime is primarily one-half of a story of thanksgiving, with the other half coming about four months later at Easter. And I've found that with each year that passes, this thanksgiving becomes more and more profound to me. My thanksgivings - as I think about them one by one - always

american national insurance co: The Story of the Two True Salesmen and Their Quest to Out Fox Each Other By Dallas Realtor Bill Cherry - 08/20/07 11:32 PM
<<==W.W. Cherry FOR THOSE WHO GREW UP during the Great Depression, buying a Cadillac or Lincoln was something you did only if you were past 50. Although my daddy, W.W. Cherry, preferred the look, style and comfort of a Cadillac, loving to take on the city's best negotiator required that he buy Lincolns. Kyle Gillespie owned the Lincoln dealership. Trying to outfox him, my daddy thought, was the ultimate challenge. "Kyle, here's my check for $9,000," Daddy said to Mr. Kyle. "Saturday's August 1st, and you've got a payroll to meet. Bet this'll cover it nicely." "Bill Cherry, shame on you. You and I go to
