Leon Breeden Received Honorary Doctorate at UNT
DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Leon Breeden, who was director of the University of North Texas Jazz Studies Program and the One O'Clock Lab Bandfrom 1959 to 1981, was awarded an honorary doctorate at UNT's doctoral commencement ceremony. The ceremony was held Aug. 14 (Friday) in the Murchison Performing Arts Center, located along the north side of Interstate 35E at North Texas Boulevard.
The degree is awarded by the university to a candidate who has demonstrated high standards of excellence through his or her scholastic achievements, professional accomplishments, philanthropy or public service … (1 comments)

The University of North Texas began as North Texas Normal College. A normal college was the name given colleges that primarily educated students to be public school teachers.
And normal colleges, for whatever the reasons, were second rate citizens among colleges and universities.
Oft times their classroom credits wouldn't even transfer to a new college should a student move, say, from North Texas Normal to the University of Texas.
Or, if the credits were accepted, they came in as a "C" regardless of what grade the student had earned.
Additionally, at least in Texas, the legislature had a history of not giving fairly, much less … (3 comments)

As the sun was going down Sunday, Patty and I met our friends (our minister and his wife) Clif and Gig Gardner and (famed radio man) Bud Buschardt at the Village Country Club on Southwestern near Skillman, for the barbeque buffet and three hours of music by the famous twenty piece Galen Jeter Orchestra.
Galen is a retired biology teacher from the Garland ISD, but he's had one big jazz orchestra or another for thirty-five years. And while he won't tell you this I will: He was with the famed Woody Herman Band along the way.

Beginning in about 1959, Leon Breeden, arguably the most famous professor of jazz music in the world, took over and made famous the jazz music program at what was then called North Texas State College. It's in Denton, about 35 miles north of Dallas.
His musicians and his bands - called Lab Bands - produced so many outstanding musicians that Stan Kenton began recruiting new band members from his bands. Time past, and in honor of the success of Mr. Breeden and his students, Mr. Kenton donated his entire music library to what by then had become known as the University of North … (6 comments)
