Before digital radio transmitters and receivers, and before many AM radio stations were allowed by their FCC license to increase their transmitting power, there was a phenomena that was called DXing.
Since AM radio signals are sent to the heavens, bounce off of the ionosphere and then come back to reach the radio receivers, often during the nighttime radio signals from a station would reach outside of its intended coverage.
Some listeners would contact that far away radio station to let management know that they had heard them, on what date and at what time.  The station would send back to them what … (2 comments)

I'm sure that the first fine meal I ever had in New Orleans was at Brennan's on Royal Street, and that was before the family bought Commander's Palace in the Garden District.  So to be on the safe side, I'll say that was 1954.
And then when I was a student at Tulane University on St. Charles Avenue (circa 1958), I also hosted a radio program, "American Airlines Music 'til Dawn" from a nearby Royal Street furniture store window. That was when I made friends with one of the restaurant's captains.  A fellow named Bill Porter.

music til dawn: AMERICAN AIRLINES' "MUSIC 'TIL DAWN" PROVIDES BUSINESS MODEL FOR REALTORS - 10/23/07 12:15 AM
            There was a time when American Airlines was one of the most respected passenger carriers in the United States.  I'm talking about a time when fares were regulated and the number of direct flights was far less than today.
            In the 1950s, American Airlines advertising and marketing consultants came up with a brilliant idea.  The company would broadcast a nightly program on the biggest radio station in each market the carrier served.  Dallas, Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C. 
            The list goes on.
