new orleans: WHY I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO LIVE IN NEW ORLEANS - A DREAM THAT WON'T COME TRUE - 10/05/10 09:19 AM
When I left Tulane University in New Orleans in 1960, as I drove out of New Orleans on my way home to Galveston, I thought to myself, "I promise I'll return here to live someday."  I hadn't graduated, but it was time for me to get more realistic about what it was costing my family for me to live and go to school there.
Far better that I continue my education at one of the Texas state universities or colleges, I had come to realize.
New Orleans and I bonded while I lived there.  The history, the character, the people, the … (1 comments)

new orleans: U.S. GOVERNMENT CORPS CANCELS LEASE ON ANIMAL SHELTER - 04/23/10 07:34 AM
While in recent years I've lived in Dallas, and at several other times in my life I've lived other places -- Denton, New Orleans and St. Louis -- in my mind I've always lived in Galveston.  Galveston is where I was born and where I was the most successful in my business career.
It's where my mom and dad and so many of my friends are buried and where I will be buried someday
Galveston is a barrier island of about 50,000 residents that is located to Houston's south by about fifty miles.
Even if you've never been there, much less … (8 comments)

new orleans: IF YOU WERE A REALTOR AND THE GOVERNMENT WERE YOUR CLIENT.... - 10/14/09 04:46 PM
and your commission on your first deal was a BILLION DOLLARS.  Here's how to comprehend its value:
A billion seconds ago it was 1959. B.A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive. C.A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age. D.A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet. E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our governmentis spending it. While this thought is still fresh in our brain...let's take a look at New Orleans ..It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division.Louisiana Senator,Mary Landrieu … (8 comments)

new orleans: BRENNAN'S OF NEW ORLEANS AND HOUSTON - MEMORIES - 11/16/08 08:47 PM
I'm sure that the first fine meal I ever had in New Orleans was at Brennan's on Royal Street, and that was before the family bought Commander's Palace in the Garden District.  So to be on the safe side, I'll say that was 1954.
And then when I was a student at Tulane University on St. Charles Avenue (circa 1958), I also hosted a radio program, "American Airlines Music 'til Dawn" from a nearby Royal Street furniture store window. That was when I made friends with one of the restaurant's captains.  A fellow named Bill Porter.
Back then it seems that loads … (3 comments)

new orleans: NEW ORLEANS & KATRINA - MEAN SPIRITED OPINIONS - 03/14/08 12:12 PM

IF YOU LEFT NEW ORLEANS BY FOOT BEFORE AUGUST 29, 2005, YOU HAD TO GET ACROSS THIS BRIDGE TO GET TO THE MAINLAND FOR SAFETY
Almost from August 30, 2005, I have been receiving emails opining that the black residents of New Orleans were somehow responsible for the outrageous prediciments that resulted to themselves and to the city as a result of Hurricane Katrina.  August 30th was the day after Katrina struck the gulf coast.
I am very familiar with New Orleans, its people and its culture.  Not only have I visited many times over the past sixty years with my family, but I … (0 comments)

new orleans: AMERICAN AIRLINES' "MUSIC 'TIL DAWN" PROVIDES BUSINESS MODEL FOR REALTORS - 10/23/07 12:15 AM
There was a time when American Airlines was one of the most respected passenger carriers in the United States.  I'm talking about a time when fares were regulated and the number of direct flights was far less than today.
In the 1950s, American Airlines advertising and marketing consultants came up with a brilliant idea.  The company would broadcast a nightly program on the biggest radio station in each market the carrier served.  Dallas, Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C.
            The list goes on.
It would be called "American Airlines' Music ‘til Dawn," and it … (7 comments)

new orleans: WHEN TWO OR MORE ARE GATHERED TOGETHER....AN INTERESTING OCCURENCE - 07/14/07 09:30 AM
Hotel Manager: When Two or More Are Gathered Together Thou Will Grant Thy Request                                                                                     By Bill Cherry

Emmett Bieger always comes to my mind whenever I wait at particular traffic light at a corner in my hometown, Galveston.
He was one of the finest hotel managers in the country. W.L. Moody, Jr., the hotel's owner, proselyted him from the famous Statler Hotel in St. Louis. Mr. Emmett always reminded me of the big band leader, Glenn Miller - lots of black hair, rimless glasses and all. Mr. Emmett was a very kind and quiet spoken man who was a true … (10 comments)
