radio: The New and Unfortunate Future of Music Radio - 01/13/17 12:21 PM
When I was a teenager, the advent of Top 40 Radio was just beginning. Prior to that time, there were less than 1,000 disc jockeys in the US.  And then with Top 40 came thousands.

I was so enamored with broadcasting, that I weaseled myself into being a Top 40 disc jockey when I was 14, and being a radio broadcasting talent has  remained as an on again, off again avocation throughout my life.

I even began doing TV features for a Houston station when I was in my early 50s. Here one of them. Bill Cherry's Memories. I even play the piano … (0 comments)

radio: STAGE FRIGHT -- TV has figured out a way to solve it - 03/11/11 12:34 AM
Even before I began hosting my first radio program when I was 14-years old, I've performed in front of audiences.  Some, when I could see them from a podium; nightly when I could see them as I played the piano in hotel dining rooms; other times when I knew they were listening to me on their radios but we couldn't see each other; and, finally when I communicated with the audience through their third eye -- the TV camera.
I haven't had stage fright in years.  And a long time ago I learned how to keep those occasion from intimidating me -- be … (2 comments)

radio: You Were a Real Radio DJ if...... - 02/02/11 12:14 AM
You were first hired by a GM who actually worked in radio before becoming GM.
Radio stations were no place for kids.
You got off on the sound of "dead air" on the competitor's station.
Sales guys wore Old Spice to cover the smell of liquor.

You were playing Elvis' #1 hits when he was alive.
Engineers could actually fix things without sending them back to the manufacturer.
You worked for only ONE station, and you could name and actually knew the guy who owned it.
You remember when normal people listened to AM radio, and only"hippies" … (3 comments)

radio: RADIO BROADCASTING TURNED 90 YEARS OLD YESTERDAY -- SEPTEMBER 30TH. - 10/01/10 06:25 AM
Like many of us from the '50s and '60s, we were fascinated by the medium of radio broadcasting, and did our best to make our mark as a personality with a commercial radio station.  My first DJ program began in 1954 on KGBC in Galveston, and by the time I decided I didn't have the fortitude to pursue it as a vocation, I had worked my way up to being one of the hosts of the famous "American Airlines Music 'til Dawn" program that was broadcast in major cities nation-wide.
Chuck Dunaway began his career a few years before I did, … (2 comments)

radio: Texas Radio Hall of Fame - 2010 Inductees - 07/27/10 02:07 AM
In 2002, radio broadcaster, Larry Shannon, and sixteen others who had built remarkable careers for themselves in Texas radio, established the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.  On the recommendation of famous DJ Chuck Dunaway of the Gordon McLendon days, I got Premier Member status in 2005, as number 96.
What is usually unknown by the public is how insecure a radio career is, and in general how poorly the on-air personalities are paid.  Oft times, for an example, a newsman or DJ goes to work only to find out that it will be his last day.  He's fired!  The reason?  "Just … (2 comments)
