Most of us know by now that the real estate market has experienced a pullback across the country which I believe is largely due to consumer confidence. The confidence level is at a low point and so we tend to tighten the belt and cut back spending. Inflation in the United States is up 4.2% as measured by the consumer price index ending May 31, 2008. America has experienced annual inflation greater than 4.2% only four times in the past 25 years. Large purchases are put on hold and we make do with our existing cars and homes. Fannin County nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia is almost split in half regarding the upcoming beer and wine referendum to be voted on in November. Business leaders and real estate developers would like to see the referendum pass so that the playing field can be opened up to attract nicer restaurants, boost tourism, create jobs, and keep revenue in the county. There was an article in the local paper, The News Observer written by Brian Finnicum regarding this issue. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) manages many lakes in North Georgia such as Lake Nottelyin Blairsville, Union County; Lake Chatuge in Hiawassee, Towns County; and Lake Blue Ridge in Blue Ridge, Fannin County. Our lakes have been below their normal levels all summer long.
North Georgia continues to suffer from the effects of an extended drought. Many of the tributary reservoirs are well below their targeted levels. Some have even reached winter levels averaging 23 feet below normal. This is very unusual for the North Georgia Mountains.
