photographers: Aperture: A really really simple explanation (I hope) :) - 10/06/08 08:09 PM

It seems like Aperture is one of those things that is perpetually confusing to people (I base this in part because it took me so dang long to feel like I really had a handle on it)!
Of course, it's also one of the most important concepts to understand when working with a imaging device (like a camera), so it's worth a little investigating.
What is Aperature?
The aperture is (simply put) the size of the opening in a given lens. It controlls how much light the lens allows in Most aperatures are mechanical devices that vary in size (in other words they can … (27 comments)

photographers: Two important things to consider about 'wide angle': - 05/14/08 07:10 PM

I bumped into two very thought provoking blogs about wide angle shots. One of the super things about this forum is the great variety of interest and opinions the members bring to it.
I'd like to highlight these two interesting questions, add some detail of my own and hopefully broaden the discussion a bit.

First off, Kathy Neilson, a Stager asks us to consider that wide angle shots may not always the best marketing in her blog; Choosing the Right Photo.
She is making the point that sometimes a narrow, more intimate shot can be highly effective … (53 comments)

photographers: Photography 101: The Ethics of Digital Manipulation - 09/12/07 07:34 AM

I want to talk to you today about a subject subtly underscores the double edged sword that is the modern darkroom. BTW, this comes about thanks to some very good questions raised by Jeff and Crystal (and probably others).
Digital editing. First, let me just come right out and ask you a question.
What level of editing or manipulation do you consider acceptable for a photo? Personal photos? Real Estate? Editorial?
While you are thinking about your response let's get a few myths out of the way:

Myth 1: The True Masters of the Film Era wouldn't stoop to … (23 comments)

photographers: Photography 101: Masks Pt 1 - 08/19/07 01:42 PM

I'm going to talk about masks for a bit. Since I don't have much free time these days I'm going to break this into two sections. In the first we will discuss the general concept of what a mask is. In the second we'll get into practical application.
First let's take a look at an image that is heavily dependant on masks. Here's the first mid tone exposure more or less straight out of the camera.

Well, yuck. That's not a very exciting picture, is it? It's a little muddy, and a lot hazy.
Basically the Mt is very … (20 comments)

photographers: This week in pictures [03-27-07]: - 03/27/07 09:16 PM

I'm swamped with work this week so I am going to post up early. The below photos are from just one job, a wedding I shot this weekend.
What makes this unusual is the following: I'm not a wedding photographer. I maintain this by telling people to use other, better photographers that specialize in weddings (there are plenty). If that doesn't work, I insist on outrageous fees.
Sometimes that STILL doesn't scare them off. Then again this wasn't your traditional wedding.
The ceremony was held at Rialto Beach. Now, if you've never been to Washington it's an amazing state from a nature standpoint. … (16 comments)

photographers: Photography 101: Low Light - 03/19/07 10:36 AM

Today's article will cover shooting in Low Light.
Don't be afraid of the dark:
I hear it all the time; "Do you want me to turn a light on?" Nope. "Do you need more light in here?". Nope. "Is the atomic weight of cobalt 87?". Also nope (it's 58.93, but I digress).
Chances are good you don't need as much light on your subject as you think (real estate photography notwithstanding, you probably want more in that case). Some of my favorite shots are low light and it's no surprise. You can create very moody and interesting work with low light … (10 comments)

photographers: Is your business plan lonely? Take it to dinner! - 03/06/07 11:53 AM

Have you hugged your business plan lately? Taken out out for a nice meal? Sat down an really talked?
Here's an excerpt from a recent conversation I had with mine:

Me: So...how are things going?
BP: Oh, you know...things are good.
Me: Yeah?
BP: Yeah we billed out a pretty good chunk of change last week.
Me: (excited) Wow, that's great! (thinking) Hey! Can we afford that new Ducati yet?
BP: (hesitantly) Um...no, not really. I mean maybe. Well, probably not.
Me: What are you talking about? I thought you just said things were going great?
BP: Well, things … (4 comments)

photographers: Selling the Listing? Sell the Community! - 02/26/07 02:17 PM

I was reviewing last years work recently when I realized that the images for a favorite client of mine never centered around the 'listing' or property in question.
In fact, among all the shoots I'd done for him...I had never photographed a single structure or piece of property he was actually selling.
Wait, what?
Yup, no pics of the property being sold...ever.
Now to be fair he mostly does large development deals. As a result it's rare there is anything much to shoot.

Instead he calls me when he wants marketable images of the local area. He gives me a … (21 comments)
