photoshop: Photography 101: HDR (High Dynamic Range Imaging) - 09/12/07 08:24 AM

Way back around when I first joined Active Rain I did a bit on Dynamic Range, in hopes of illustrating one of the common limitations of current imaging devices and some ways to work within those limitations.
Of course, few of us are ever satisfied with limitations of any kind and I wanted to share with you one way to address DR in photos.
I'm talking about HDR of course. In simple terms HDR is a process where a camera in a fixed position (such as a tripod) is shot multiple times at different exposure levels. Using specialized software, the images are then blended … (20 comments)

photoshop: Photography 101: The Ethics of Digital Manipulation - 09/12/07 07:34 AM

I want to talk to you today about a subject subtly underscores the double edged sword that is the modern darkroom. BTW, this comes about thanks to some very good questions raised by Jeff and Crystal (and probably others).
Digital editing. First, let me just come right out and ask you a question.
What level of editing or manipulation do you consider acceptable for a photo? Personal photos? Real Estate? Editorial?
While you are thinking about your response let's get a few myths out of the way:

photoshop: Photography 101: Masks Pt 2 - 08/24/07 07:36 PM

Recently I [attempted] to offer a clear explanation of what a mask is. Now I'm going to give you a quick demonstration of how it works. Pt 3 will be some actual use cases you might enjoy trying.
I'm going to take a brightly colored image and create a very basic B&W layer on top of it. I'm then going to show you how some different masks (applied to the B&W layer) might change the image.
First off, here's our main image. This is a shot I took of pearl harbor during Christmas, from the memorial area. If you've never … (13 comments)

photoshop: Photography 101: Masks Pt 1 - 08/19/07 01:42 PM

I'm going to talk about masks for a bit. Since I don't have much free time these days I'm going to break this into two sections. In the first we will discuss the general concept of what a mask is. In the second we'll get into practical application.
First let's take a look at an image that is heavily dependant on masks. Here's the first mid tone exposure more or less straight out of the camera.

Well, yuck. That's not a very exciting picture, is it? It's a little muddy, and a lot hazy.
Basically the Mt is very … (20 comments)

photoshop: Photography 101: Black and White Conversion - 03/14/07 03:39 PM

Today's article will cover B&W Conversion and Toning.
BTW, I don't have a lot of time today as I'm prepping for the John L. Scott convention tomorrow. I'll be the sole photography vendor and I'd just like to give a big heart-felt shout out and thanks to my competition, for failing to show up. ;)
I'll be walking you through color to B&W conversion, layer by layer. We'll be using the following image from a shoot I did last year with a preemie. The original RAW (1) and the final output (2) below:

It's all about the color!
