seattle photographer: Keeping your digital images organized: - 08/21/08 06:14 PM

One of the truly great things about shooting digitally is the freedom to simply snap away. Of course the downside to all this is you are likely to end up with a a lot of images...and I mean a LOT.
If you are anything like me, you probably have a large collection of photos - some which you really like and others which might not be your best work but are still worth keeping.
What do you do with all these pics? How do you keep track of them? How do you keep them sorted? I just ordered another 1.5 … (19 comments)

seattle photographer: Do you REALLY need to hire a professional photographer for every listing? - 05/21/08 01:05 AM

Heck no you don't!
That's right, I said it and I'm a photographer.
Listen, every once in a while I see a post on AR by a real estate 'photographer' or virtual tour business where they suggest, imply, or outright accuse agents of doing their clients a disservice by not 'hiring a professional'.
To be sure, there plenty of situations where a photographer can enhance your business tremendously but there are also many situations where it might be money down the drain.
Situations where you probably don't need a professional photographer:
The property is sizzling: Last year I recall a … (60 comments)

seattle photographer: The Seattle Aquarium: - 05/06/08 04:01 PM

Ok, I admit I'm not very good about this whole blogging thing. I got really busy last year and the whole thing sort of fell by the wayside (I do have a bit of an excuse though - more on that later).
I picked up a new client just a month back and I was curious about how she found me as I do almost all my business by referral. "Active Rain" she told me.
Oh...riiiiight, Active Rain! *smacks own forehead*
However, don't be too hard on me, I've been a tad distracted:

seattle photographer: Photography 101: Masks Pt 2 - 08/24/07 07:36 PM

Recently I [attempted] to offer a clear explanation of what a mask is. Now I'm going to give you a quick demonstration of how it works. Pt 3 will be some actual use cases you might enjoy trying.
I'm going to take a brightly colored image and create a very basic B&W layer on top of it. I'm then going to show you how some different masks (applied to the B&W layer) might change the image.
First off, here's our main image. This is a shot I took of pearl harbor during Christmas, from the memorial area. If you've never … (13 comments)

seattle photographer: Photography 101: Chromatic Aberration: - 05/03/07 12:21 PM

It's been a while since I posted in the 101 series. I'm trying to get back into it but I've just been so busy. Still, I've got a pile of these things floating around in my head - help! I need to get them out! :)
Anyway, I wanted to talk today about a gremlin of sorts that impacts anyone with a camera, period. I'm talking about Chromatic Aberration also known more informally as Color Fringing.
CA most frequently occurs when light entering a lens is of high contrast, i.e bright light next to low light or no light. At … (11 comments)

seattle photographer: This Week in Pictures [04-07-07]: - 04/07/07 06:33 PM

Wow, to say I've been busy this week would be putting it mildy (this is the first time I've even fired up AR). A few of the highlights from real estate shoots.
:)
Cheers, -B

seattle photographer: This Week in Pictures [03-22-07]: - 03/23/07 12:24 AM

I have a plan. Actually, let's call it a scheme. That's more exciting sounding. Kind of dangerous. I've been awfully busy this week with shooting, I need a little AR time. :)
My plan is to post up a few of the given week's images.
My favorites from work and from the personal world (or the interesting bits, even if the photos are bad). Please feel free to comment and critique. I'm also happy to answer any questions. I hope others will join in and post their photos as well. The ones they like as well as the ones they … (28 comments)

seattle photographer: Privacy Rights & Considerations: - 03/16/07 01:41 PM

Today's article will be about safety considerations and your rights (both as a photographer and a subject).
I consider this a very important subject that rarely finds itself center stage among photography enthusiasts when discussions occur. It should.
So what am I talking about with regards to safety?
Is your spouse going to wallop you when they find out how much you spent on your new gear? Heavy camera and lens combo straining your back? Is your camera harmful if ingested? (editors note, um...yes)
No, nothing along those lines. We are going to talk about your right to privacy, when … (6 comments)

seattle photographer: Photography 101: Boke (Depth of Field) - 03/09/07 02:38 PM

Today's Blog will cover example of Boke.
By the way, this is intended to build on Cheryl's very well put together description of DOF (depth of field). I suggest you take a peek at it before reading this unless you already feel you have a pretty good grasp of it.
Boke is the out of focus properties of a lens, also equal to the resulting out of focus areas in an image produced by that lens. This relates entirely to how DOF is used when taking an image.
Just to clear up some immediate confusion...you'll almost always see the word … (16 comments)

seattle photographer: Photography 101: Your Movie Star Headshot! - 02/28/07 01:18 PM

Today's article will cover Headshots:
Love 'em or hate 'em...headshots serve a necessary and important function in our business. As interaction is increasingly technology based (this whole Internet thing for instance) having a flattering image of yourself helps impart a little humanity, provide face recognition, (and hopefully) convey your sense of enthusiasm, grace, and professionalism. Without further delay, let's jump in!
Lighting:
While there are a myriad of different lighting options, a professional headshot is generally pretty straight forward. I tend to group lighting into one of three categories when working with clients, helping to define the style of the shot … (33 comments)

seattle photographer: Fantastic listing experience? Don't forget the perfect closing gift! - 02/21/07 01:20 AM

You dazzled them with the listing presentation Your comps came in with the precision of Swiss Engineering Via expert negotiation you secured the best price for your client and in record time Time for a pat on the back, job well done?
Don't forget that closing gift! :)
A well thought out and timely closing gift is critical to conveying that you genuinely care about your client's satisfaction with their purchase. Closing gifts need not be expensive (though in some markets it will make sense to invest more) but they should be creative and most of all thoughtful. Family portraiture … (25 comments)
