downsizing: Top 5 Mistakes People Make When Moving (that Movers Won't Tell You!) - 01/06/12 11:33 AM
PROFESSIONAL MOVERS PROBABLY WON'T TELL YOU THESE THINGS because your mistakes make them money or because they don't even think about it but, in my experience as a move manager, these are the most common mistakes I encounter with my clients. (“Home A” refers to the home where the packing takes place – or the “front end” of the move. “Home B” refers to the home where the unpacking takes place – or the “back end” of the move.) 1. “Since I’ve already paid for it, I might as well bring it.” This is the attitude most people have toward

downsizing: Downsizing Decades of Memories - Part III - 06/19/09 03:36 PM
In Part I and Part II of this blog, I've mentioned a few ways to downsize the clutter while preserving the memories. Both of them include the use of digital photography. This entry is all about tackling the collection of traditional photos. What on earth is one to do with a lifetime of photos?Fortunately today there all sorts of wonderful ways to keep photos that don’t require lots of space or money. The first step is a quick pre-sort. If you do nothing else, at least do this:• Throw or give away all duplicates. If giving them away becomes a chore,

downsizing: Moving Tips - 04/22/09 02:40 PM
In case you don't already have enough on your mind when planning a move, here are a few more thoughts to consider when planning your moving date and choosing a moving company. First of all, remember that loading up the truck usually is NOT the last thing you have to do in your old home. Often you need to get your charitable donations picked up, junk removed or, at the very least, a cleaning crew into the home so it is left in "broom clean" condition. So be sure to leave a little time between the moving van pulling out

downsizing: Putting Your Home on a Diet - 04/10/09 11:07 AM
[This blog was inspired by Nancy Conner's blog "Confessions of the Daughter of a Packrat" which seemed to invite similar confessions from other members about their own pack rat tendencies.] Many people think, because of what I do, I must be the queen of organization. Well, I may organize moves for a living but I am a very far cry from a professional organizer. One look at my home office and you'll know what I'm talking about. Or my dining table, where I have a collection of several weeks of junk mail. Or... (never mind, you get the idea.) Yet,

downsizing: Downsizing Decades of Memories - Part II - 04/08/09 07:46 AM
As a continuation to Part I, here is another creative way to help a client or loved one preserve some of their cherished memories when the decision to downsize means parting with some or many of their believed belongings. Creating a Memory Book Over the years, and sometimes the generations, people often begin to associate items in their home with memories. Sometimes the story of the item itself is just as important as the memory. Stories like, "This table is the only item my mother brought with her when she married my father, other than her clothes. I have

downsizing: Downsizing Decades of Memories - Part I - 03/13/09 07:34 PM
As a senior move manager, one of the most important aspects of my job is to minimize the amount of stress and trauma my clients are experiencing. Let's face it: moving is stressful no matter how much help you have! It is all the more difficult when a client has lived in their home for decades. Perhaps it is the only home they have known as an adult. Furthermore, not only does your client have to leave their beloved home but they also have to reduce the contents of their home by anywhere from 25% to 85%. Combine all of these
