home staging: A Few of My Favorite Things - 01/06/10 11:20 AM
Every now and then we come across a product that makes our professional life or home life a little bit easier or a little bit more environmentally friendly or a little bit more organized. I thought I would take a section of each newsletter to share with you one of my favorite products. It may or may not be new to the market. It may or may not be new to you. Nonetheless, it's something I've quickly discovered I would hate to have to live without. My favorite product this month is the Magic Eraser. I love it because it makes

home staging: How To Hang a Mezuzah - 01/06/10 11:12 AM
There's an awful lot to think about when moving. If you're Jewish, the last thing you want to ponder is which way to hang the mezuzah so here's the lowdown: The word "mezuzah" literally means "doorpost" but it usually refers to a case on Jewish doorposts containing a small scroll inscribed with two prayers: the Shema and V'ahavta. The mezuzah refers back to the story from Exodus where the Israelites were protected from the plagues by marking their doorposts with blood. The mezuzah today is a daily public reminder of Jewish faith and identity. Before affixing the mezuzah to the

home staging: 5 Reasons NOT to Paint Your Walls White - 05/25/09 12:44 PM
When it comes to preparing a home for sale, most people think that white is a safe, neutral color to paint an interior. Everything goes with white and it makes a room appear crisp and clean and bright, right? Well...yes. But the real question is: is that the best way to go? Here are some other things to think about before painting your entire home eggshell white or "renter's white": 1. White is neutral but it can also appear stark or cold, especially in a vacant property. 2. Too much of a good thing often becomes "too much" instead of a

home staging: Sold in ONE Day! Yes, Staging Definitely Works! - 05/05/09 07:49 PM
Here is a home I just finished staging. Was it perfect? No. Was the homeowner willing to do all the work recommended? No. But it still sold in only a day with multiple offers. Purple and bright green carpeting in every room, including one bathroom. Dust on every surface. Garbage under the beds. Junk mail from 5 years ago. Yeah, this house was a lot of work. I removed two beds, a sofa, 3 bench seats, half the artwork, dozens of bags and boxes of stuff, curtains, carpeting, and vertical binds. Cleaned nearly every surface in the house. Replaced a rotting

home staging: The Clutter:Square Footage Ratio - 04/26/09 02:34 PM
Stagers and Realtors alike have all faced that uncomfortable moment of trying to explain to homeowners why many of their beloved treasures should be packed away before putting a home on the market. We fear that homeowners will take our comments, which are intended to be helpful, as criticism of their personal taste even though we have explained why it is so important to declutter and depersonalize a home. I have found the following explaination to be very helpful. I call it the clutter:square footage ratio -- "Stuff" absorbs square footage. The more "stuff" you have, the

home staging: Moving Tips - 04/22/09 02:40 PM
In case you don't already have enough on your mind when planning a move, here are a few more thoughts to consider when planning your moving date and choosing a moving company. First of all, remember that loading up the truck usually is NOT the last thing you have to do in your old home. Often you need to get your charitable donations picked up, junk removed or, at the very least, a cleaning crew into the home so it is left in "broom clean" condition. So be sure to leave a little time between the moving van pulling out

home staging: Clutter To Productivity Ratio: Decrease Clutter and Increase Productivity - 04/10/09 12:14 PM
In my last career, nearly every horizontal surface in my office was stacked with piles of paperwork and books which, for YEARS, needed to be filed or put away. I more or less knew what was in the piles on my desk but had no clue what I would find on the filing cabinets. Finally I got to the point where I couldn't take it anymore. So here is what I did:Each day when I arrived at work -- before opening my mail, checking my voicemail, or even booting up the computer -- I spent 15-20 minutes sorting. I started with

home staging: Putting Your Home on a Diet - 04/10/09 11:07 AM
[This blog was inspired by Nancy Conner's blog "Confessions of the Daughter of a Packrat" which seemed to invite similar confessions from other members about their own pack rat tendencies.] Many people think, because of what I do, I must be the queen of organization. Well, I may organize moves for a living but I am a very far cry from a professional organizer. One look at my home office and you'll know what I'm talking about. Or my dining table, where I have a collection of several weeks of junk mail. Or... (never mind, you get the idea.) Yet,

home staging: Downsizing Decades of Memories - Part II - 04/08/09 07:46 AM
As a continuation to Part I, here is another creative way to help a client or loved one preserve some of their cherished memories when the decision to downsize means parting with some or many of their believed belongings. Creating a Memory Book Over the years, and sometimes the generations, people often begin to associate items in their home with memories. Sometimes the story of the item itself is just as important as the memory. Stories like, "This table is the only item my mother brought with her when she married my father, other than her clothes. I have

home staging: The Power of Positive Thought - 03/14/09 02:56 PM
Okay, so I'm no scientist. Nor am I into all those touchy-feely soft fuzzies or new-age cure-alls. But this one seems to work for me: Over a year ago, my 68 year-old mother talked me into joining her for a sprint triathlon. (Yeah, I can hear you laughing through the computer. Stop already!) So I promptly started reading up on the subject and the most informative and most enjoyable read for sloths like me was by far "Slow Fat Triathlete" by Jayne Williams. Before her first big triathlon, her coach had her do a bunch of
