My cleaning system is Hot Water Extraction (Steam Cleaning) which is what the major carpet manufacturers recommend.  I have a 4 step system:

1. Vacuum, this removes up to 70% of the dry soil in your carpets
2. Pre-Spray with cleaning agents to suspend the soil
3. Hot Water extract to continue cleaning and extracting the water and soil out of your carpet.  The water contains rinsing agents that neutralize the cleaning agents and help keep your carpets soft and cleaner longer
4. Groom carpet to set nap in a single uniform direction and give carpet an overall finished appearance as well as aid in the drying process by separating the fibers.
