Veterans day is coming up.

Please think about all the service members who have sacrifice their lives for your freedom this week. I spent 21 years defending our country and never asked for anything in return, I never really wanted anything, there were times that I was embarrassed about being in the military because of society's perception.

My values changed, and now I realize more than ever that what I did wasn't for anyone for me but for everyone else. I did it for my kids, my wife and my parents, I wanted them to grow up with the same freedom that I had.

Every time I see someone in uniform now it's different for me, I want to stand up and salute them, I want them to know I understand, more I want them to know I appreciate the sacrifice they are giving, I did it myself and I truly understand.

Bike route between Bremerton and Gorst!

BREMERTON — A proposed Sinclair Inlet Trail between Bremerton and Gorst could include separate lanes for bicycles and pedestrians along much of the route, according to a "concept plan" to be discussed Thursday night.

Initial ideas in the trails plan — which also includes ideas to restore shorelines and control stormwater — rely on narrow corridors along both sides of the existing railroad tracks. At the two ends of the trail, where there is almost no land along the water, the walking path would cross the tracks and merge with the bike path.

The trail project has been in the planning stage for three years, though it has been the dream of many people for much longer, said Don Larson, president of Kitsap Trees and Shoreline Association, which sponsored the planning effort.

Bryan Bowden of the National Park Service helped organize the effort and bring together various design elements.

Bowden said the idea to separate the bike path from the walking path came out of a series of planning meetings involving many community members. It may be more feasible to put the paths together on the highway side of the tracks, he said, but he chose to leave the plan as it came out of the committee.

"These things tend to morph over time," he noted.

Some of the strongest supporters of the plan are bicycle commuters who would like a safe route from their homes in South Kitsap through Gorst to their places of work in Bremerton, Larson said. Getting people out of their cars and onto their bikes will reduce traffic and pollution while improving people's health, he added.

The bike path would be off the highway and separated from cars with some kind of physical barrier and landscaping, according to the plan. A physical barrier also would lie between the bike path and the railroad tracks, where the space would generally be 12 feet from the tracks except in a few narrow spaces, where the separation would be 8 feet.

If the walking path were placed on the opposite side of the tracks, it would offer unobstructed views of the water. The plans calls for a space of at least 12 feet from the tracks wherever possible, as well as a physical barrier.

Bowden said the spaces were measured initially, but it will take engineering work to confirm a final design.

Area residents are encouraged to offer their ideas during a public meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Norm Dicks Government Center, 345 Sixth St. in Bremerton. The preliminary plan can be found on the website of the Kitsap Trees and Shoreline Association, www.grantsolutions.biz/kitsa/website.

In addition to the trail, the plan identifies several possible restoration projects. The most ambitious is the restoration of a 4,000-foot reach of shoreline in the Windy Point area south of the Highway 3/304 interchange. The project would involve the creation of a 25- to 35-foot backshore area with a sloping beach that could be enhanced with imported gravel and planted with dune grass.

"This enhancement would greatly expand on the surf smelt spawning beach recently documented by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife at Windy Point," the plan states. "This area would also provide enhanced nearshore habitat for juvenile salmon, other fish and wildlife as well as a great recreational beach opportunity where none exists today."

Another area proposed for enhancement includes what is called the Viking Fence lagoon at the edge of Gorst, where the railroad tracks cross over the highway. With stormwater controls and treatment, the man-made lagoon could become a valuable saltwater marsh, according to the plan.

Other enhancements could include the restoration of Wright Creek, also known as Charleston Creek. The forgotten stream drains down the hill in a man-made channel before entering a culvert that discharges into Sinclair Inlet. Natural meanders could be added to the creek, reducing the velocity of flow, the plan states. Removing the culvert and improving the highway crossing would enhance fish habitat in the mile-long stream.

Following a 30-day comment period, the plan will be revised with additional information. It could be adopted by local governments and possibly the Navy and Washington Department of Transportation, thus enhancing the effort to obtain state and federal grants for various aspects of the project, Bowden said.

While the trail idea has met with the most support, the environmental projects bring added value to the plan, he noted.

"By combining surface water management, shoreline restoration and bicycle access," he said, "you bring together groups that improve your potential for implementation."

You can paddle most any month, but autumn is about the only time you can share the water with a bunch of salmon acrobats. It's a great time for camping, too, especially if you've time to head for the dry side of the state.

Check out the following suggestions for getting outdoors in the fall:

Fall color hikes and drives

One of the best places to see autumn color from a car seat or a trail is the country around Chinook Pass. Located above Tipsoo Lake at the eastern border of Mount Rainier National Park, Chinook Pass offers colorful autumn vistas from Highway 410 and from the trails that follow the mountain ridges on either side of the road. Besides the yellow and orange meadows around the lake, the forests east of the pass host larch trees, which disguise themselves with other evergreens during the spring and summer, but in the autumn they show their true colors.

To see the country by car, follow Highway 410 southeast from Enumclaw to Mount Rainier National Park and climb to Cayuse Pass and its junction with Highway 123, turn left and switchback to Tipsoo Lake and Chinook Pass.

At 5,430 feet above sea level, Chinook is one of the highest passes crossed by a major highway, although the road is closed during the winter months. You'll see a few of the larches along the crest of the ridge that separates Tipsoo Peak to the north and Naches Peak to the south. The farther east you go, perhaps to the scenic road south to Goose Prairie, the more larches you'll see.

If you'd like to hike for your autumn color blast, follow the Pacific Crest Trail either north or south from the Chinook Pass Trailhead, just east of the summit. The trail to the south crosses Highway 410 on the new log entrance bridge at Mount Rainier National Park.

The hike north traverses above the highway for about a mile, then climbs to Sheep Lake before crossing a high pass and winding its way north above Crystal Mountain winter sports area. Take this path if you're hiking with your dog, because the trail across the highway enters Mount Rainier National Park in a mile or so, where dogs are prohibited on trails.

Wildlife watching

Probably the best nearby spot for seeing wildlife from a car around our neck of the woods is at Staircase, in Olympic National Park. The river bottoms along the road up the North Fork ofthe Skokomish River to Staircase east to the Olympic National Park boundary frequently hosts a herd of elk.

Another good elk — watching location is about a mile upstream from the Staircase Ranger Station on the trail to Spike Camp. Flats along the river are parklike and more open than the surrounding forest.

Hikers needn't go any farther than their own backyard for a chance to see black bear, mountain lions, bobcats, deer and even elk at Green Mountain State Forest west of Bremerton. Two trails take you into the forest and to the summit of the mountain where — even if you don't spot any wildlife — the view is spectacular on a clear autumn day.

The Wildcat Trail, about 4 miles one-way, begins off the Holly Road, just west of Wildcat Lake County Park, and the Gold Creek Trail, about 2 miles one-way, starts off Gold Creek Road.

A word of caution to mountain bike riders: a couple of years ago, a mountain biker riding down the Gold Creek Trail came within feet of hitting a black bear using the same trail. No, the bear wasn't on a bike.

Paddle with salmon

This is a unique outdoor experience, made possible by the fact that returning salmon head into sheltered bays and quiet waters where inexperienced paddlers aren't as exposed to the dangers of big water and wind. Dyes Inlet at Clear Creek or Chico Creek are prime examples.

In the event you'd like company, you can join the Olympic Outdoor Center's Salmon Kayak Tours, scheduled on weekends beginning Saturday through Nov. 27. The Center furnishes tandem 'yaks and equipment, and paddlers of all ages and experience levels are welcome to join the tours.

Olympic Outdoor Center guides host tours and all programs begin with a short paddling and safety lesson. Programs are held on Miller Bay in North Kitsap, and around Chico Creek in Dyes Inlet. Cost is $49 per person or $45 for groups of four to eight, and reservations are required.

POULSBO – It cost about $235,000 to buy a home in Kitsap County in August.

That was the median price for a home here, according to the Northwest Multiple Listing Service, which tracks real estate data in 21 Western Washington counties.

There were signs of momentum in the local real estate industry in August. Excluding the more populous King, Snohomish and Pierce counties, Kitsap was second in number of new listings, first in number of active listings, second in number of pending sales, first in number of closed sales, third in average price for a home and fifth in median price. (The median price means half of the homes sold for more than that price, half sold for less.)

In August, there were 455 new listings in Kitsap County, up from 436 in August 2010. There were a total of 1,925 homes on the market, down from 2,062; 333 pending sales, up from 289; and 270 closed sales, up from 198.

While Kitsap’s median price is 2.1 percent lower than in August 2010, there are signs prices have stabilized; the median home price has hovered mostly in the mid-$230,000s this year. Kitsap was one of only five counties to show slight year-to-date price changes. The others were Grant, -1.85 percent; Whatcom, -0.65 percent; Okanogan, unchanged; and San Juan, +2.6 percent.

“A real estate market is about activity and momentum,” said Frank Wilson, a Northwest MLS director and branch managing broker at John L. Scott Real Estate in Poulsbo. “We continue to live in a real estate market of extreme affordability, affordability levels that have not been seen in decades.”

Indeed. Brenda Prowse, broker and owner of Prowse and Company, said it was possible to buy a home for less than $200,000 in Kingston at the end of August.

Inventory – the number of homes on the market – is increasing and prices are dropping in Kingston and Poulsbo, creating a buyer’s market, she said.

MLS directors say potential homebuyers should get pre-approved for a home loan, understand what homes are available in their selected market area and price range, and sign up to receive daily email notifications of just-listed properties. And sellers should take similar steps -- if you want to sell your home, understand the market.

“From a marketing perspective, there is nothing better than motivated sellers who are willing to stage their home for sale and price it to be competitive in today’s market,” Wilson said. “This market is now about serious buyers and serious sellers -- people who have a plan and goals in mind. Our pending sales are up more than 15 percent, which shows the activity of a healthy market.”

Prowse likes to look at numbers over a three-month period. In Kingston, the three-month average sales price of $249,633 is 1 percent lower than a year ago, she said. The average number of closed sales was 44 percent lower than a year ago, while the number of pending sales fell 50 percent from a year ago, compared to an increase of 6 percent countywide.

“The number of active listings in Kingston is 30 percent higher than a year ago” at 82,” she said. “Inventory was falling last year and is building now … Kingston is still a buyer's market.”

Likewise in Poulsbo, including the downtown core, from the head of Liberty Bay southeast to Ne-Si-Ka Bay, and parts north to Sawdust Hill Road. The August median sales price for Poulsbo was $300,000, down about 6 percent from a year ago and down about 3 percent from the previous month, she said. Over a three-month period, the average closed-sale price was $307,983, about 7 percent lower than a year ago – nice for buyers, and not bad for sellers because that price was better than the median price elsewhere in the county.

The market is showing a pulse in response. The number of pending sales in Poulsbo over a three-month period was up 33 percent from a year ago, Prowse said. The number of homes on the market, 125, is 18 percent higher than a year ago and 5 percent higher than the previous month.

There are signs of momentum regionwide as well. August ranks as this year’s best month for pending and closed sales in Western Washington, according to the Northwest MLS. Last month’s volume of pending sales was the highest since April 2010 when the homebuyer tax incentive expired.

Regionwide, Northwest MLS brokers reported 7,632 pending sales, a gain of more than 26 percent from the same month a year ago. Closed sales climbed more than 35 percent from the same month a year ago, rising from 4,211 sales to 5,704. Through eight months, this year’s completed transactions have outgained last year 36,918 to 36,326, an increase of more than 1.6 percent.

“The underlying factors for improving sales are developing, such as rising rents, record high-affordability conditions and investors buying real estate as a future inflation hedge,” said Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the National Association of Realtors. “It is now a question of lending standards and consumers having the necessary confidence to enter the market.”

PORT ORCHARD — Construction has begun on a community services center that will serve thousands of low-income and jobless South Kitsap residents each month.

The KCR South Kitsap Community Services Center at Jackson and Lund avenues will be finished in a year.

Behind it on the same campus, eight cottages for low-income people are planned for construction as soon as possible, though a crucial chunk of funding has yet to be confirmed.

With so many of its clients calling South Kitsap home, Kitsap Community Resources has long wanted a permanent satellite there. For the past 10 years, it has had to make do with quarters in a rundown former grocery story on Bay Street. Many clients went to Bremerton.

"The whole idea is to have countywide services to South Kitsap residents in South Kitsap," KCR Executive Director Larry Eyer said.

The 6,800 square feet of space in the new building is about the same as the Bay Street facility but is configured more efficiently to handle more people. The Bay Street facility will close when the new center opens, and its employees will move, too. No new hiring is expected.

Services under the public nutrition program Women, Infants and Children will take up most of the first floor. Job-seeking services, including counselors and a computer lab, will take up most of the second.

Services for veterans, as well as the traditional KCR services such as helping needy people make their rent and pay their utility bills will be offered. Programs such as KCR's effort to improve weatherization of homes belonging to low-income people will be on tap, too.

The Kitsap Adult Center for Education, which teaches English as a second language, will have space there.

The total cost of the center and the cottages is $5.2 million.

The money for the center is in hand, coming from WIC, state and county sources and private donors.

While some of the funding has been procured for the eight cottages, construction depends on KCR receiving $1.6 million it has asked for from the Washington State Housing Trust Fund. KCR leaders won't know whether they've received it until October. If they don't, the cottages, each with two bedrooms and 1,100 square feet of space, will have to wait.

"We're having to do this in two phases because of the way the funding is coming in," said Mike Botkin, KCR project director.

The cottages were planned next to the center with the thought that residents would be the same ones in need of services.

Walking paths and parking are planned on the 2.2-acre site.

Project designers hope to achieve a "silver" designation under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. That means construction and designing of the building took a lighter toll on the environment, and that the building can be operated using less energy.

Wenzlaucq Architects and Fairbank Construction Co., both of Bainbridge Island, are behind the new facility.
