Hummingbirds feel the drought too. - 08/30/11 10:02 AM
Yeah, everybody has heard about the heat and the drought in Texas. Being a resident of Arlington, I personally can’t wait to move on and it not be the topic of discussion on the news everyday. But one interesting fact that I saw on the news yesterday concerning the heat and drought was concerning hummingbirds. There are so many things you don’t think about being affected by drought. Apparently the hummingbird population here in north Texas is being affected by the shorter supply of flowering plants due to drought. The news encouraged people to put out their hummingbird feeders and

Cities of Fort Worth and Arlington now under watering restrictions. - 08/29/11 12:04 PM
After 60+ days of 100+ degree temperatures, the Cities of Fort Worth and Arlington have finally implemented lawn watering restrictions. This is considered Stage 1 restrictions. There are several restrictions including watering only 2 days a week, restrictions on watering days based on even or odd number street address, and also there is no watering at all on Monday. We all knew this would be coming since it has been so ridiculously hot for so long now, but it’s just amazing that it is coming so late in the summer. Luckily, the weather forecast is

Brighten someone's day today! - 08/25/11 01:13 PM
As I’m sitting here with the power having just went off in my house…no TV, no sound at all really, no A/C (in Texas, ugh), I’m thinking back to the conversation I just had with the customer service rep at the power company. I wanted to report the outage of course, so I gave them a call. The rep proceeded to tell me she was sorry for the inconvenience and they are working on the problem. She also said it was due to the severe storms we had last night in our area and it would be several hours until

What to do in the scorching heat in DFW? - 08/24/11 11:17 AM
Call me crazy, but here’s my suggestion. Go to the Fort Worth Zoo! Yes, the zoo… in this heat! My son and I love going to the zoo when it’s this hot. But you have to do it right… it’s all about strategy. Go when they open, at 10am. There are very few people there and it’s not scorching hot yet. But that’s not it. For the first hour or so, walk around and see what you want to see. Go to Texas Wild first because nobody ever goes that direction first. Everyone goes toward

Water your lawn more effectively and efficiently - 08/20/11 11:16 PM
If your lawn is anything like mine and has a bit of a slope to it, you may see water spilling off the grass and onto the sidewalk or driveway after a period of watering. As dry as it is here in Texas and many other parts of the country right now, my yard tends to still start to repel water after only 6-7 minutes of watering. So here is the tip to make sure you are watering effectively and efficiently. If you water, for example, for 15 minutes at each station, split the time

IN-N-OUT...not so easy to get in and out in Texas. - 08/13/11 02:53 PM
IN-N-OUT Burger has come to Texas. I’ve yet to try it myself but in the next couple of months a restaurant will be opening in my town here in Arlington, TX. There are several around me that have opened already but I have no problem being patient. So this brings me to my question. When our hometown location opens, do I join all the other crazies and wait in the lines for hours only after battling the police directed traffic, just for another burger. Is it just another burger? It seems like any new place that receives

I'm Proud to Live in Arlington, Texas! - 08/11/11 11:21 PM
I live in one of the greatest and most entertaining cities in America…Arlington, Texas. Not only do we have great people and terrific schools, but we have one of the best entertainment districts you will find. First of all we are home to the greatest football team of all time, the Dallas Cowboys. And of course the best team needs the best stadium. Dallas Cowboys Stadium is the top of the line, state of the art stadium in the NFL…regardless of the train wreck of a Super Bowl we just hosted :) We

Sometimes even flood insurance can't save your home. - 08/10/11 05:12 PM
Homes in Arlington, TX which were damaged or destroyed by Tropical Storm Hermine in 2010, and eventually bought out by the city are now being demolished. What was once a denseneighborhood will now be greenbelt and park area with scattered homes remaining which were originally built with the finished floor elevations at a level which is above the base flood elevation. We can only wish those remaining home owners luck in the future. The lesson we learned here and from similar cases across the country is that flood insurance is a necessity for many properties, however in the end,

What to know about Mandatory Flood Insurance - 08/02/11 06:11 PM
As we all most likely know, flood insurance is required on an insurable structure located in a special flood hazard area when there is a government backed loan attached to said structure. Here are a few common questions about the flood insurance requirement. My surveyor says I am above the flood elevation, so I do not have to get the flood insurance, right? Incorrect. The flood insurance requirement is based on the current effective FEMA map. If said map shows any portion of the structure touching the boundary of the special flood
