food: Do you have your CSA share lined up for summer yet?? - 03/22/10 03:02 PM
Oh yes, another local food post. You know me - love to buy local and buy direct! Good food is one of the joys of life.
It has been years since a CSA (community supported agriculture) has had a drop off point in or around Monroe. For those of you unfamiliar with what a CSA is, you purchase a share of the harvest from a local produce grower. These farmers grow vegetables on their area farm, and every week during the growing season, you receive a box of freshly picked, perfectly in season produce as your share of the harvest. These … (3 comments)

food: Community Picnic Series begins Wednesday - 06/14/09 05:23 PM

Good food.  Good conversation.  Good music.  Any regular reader know that I love all three, so I am excited about the community picnic series beginning this week.
This week starts the first of a three-part series of free community picnics. “Stirring the Pot: Dialogue, Discussion and Dinner in the Dairyland,” is sure to be an engaging and fun forum for area residents to gather and learn more about creating a healthy, green and sustainable local food system.
Come sit on the Monroe Arts Center lawn on a blanket and enjoying your picnic. Watch area chefs share secrets for cooking … (0 comments)

food: Thankful Thursday - Patience bears fruit - 06/04/09 10:57 AM

We planted two dwarf pear trees a few years ago.  I know the old saying about full sized pear trees "Grow pears for your heirs."  This is why we went with dwarf trees.  The cherry tree we planted the same year has born fruit three years now, but the pears have never had anything.  This year, though, one tree is covered with tiny fruit and the other has a smattering of developing pears too.  Exciting!  I'm looking forward to making pear butter and pear crisp this fall.

food: Local Foods Initiative - 03/16/09 02:24 PM
Award winning breweries.  CSAs.  Cheese factories.  Catalog classic The Swiss Colony.  Family farms.  Market gardeners.
Obviously, food plays a large role in our lives here in Green County.
There is a new initiative beginning that has the goal of getting more of our local foods into local homes as well as helping people start the value-added food businesses they have always dreamed of, but never had the resources or support to begin.
The group, sponsored by UW Extension, is currently doing a survey to assess demand for a community kitchen in order to secure funding. If you currently have a small … (3 comments)

food: Monroe, WI Middle School Food Drive - 01/28/09 01:04 PM
Students at the Monroe Middle School are spending some time helping others this week.  On Friday, students from the school will be collecting non-perishable food items from businesses around the Downtown Square and delivering them to the Interfaith Food Pantry.
If you are able to contribute, drop off your donations at a participating Downtown business before 11:15 on Friday morning.
Re/Max Towne Square Realty is a drop off point. Bring your donation in and just let Deanna at the front know that you are contributing to the food drive.
Thank you in advance for anything you are able to donate.

food: Eat local, eat well with Sugar River Dairy Yogurt - 01/24/09 11:23 AM
Sugar River Dairy is an artisan business located in the hills outside of Albany here in Green County. Named for the Sugar River that meanders through the area, Sugar River Dairy focuses on making just a couple of things and doing them extremely well - yogurt and their new line of sour cream.
Owners Ron and Chris Paris are one of only three artisan, homestead yogurt makers in Wisconsin. They focus on small batch, non-homogenized yogurt created with milk from local cows. The cows eat grass in pastures, and they live their lives without the synthetic growth hormone rBGH.
Ron and … (4 comments)

food: Cheese Days in Monroe, WI - 09/15/08 11:13 AM
Every other year, Monroe is home to the oldest food festival in the Midwest. I don't call this blog "Cheese Country Realtor" for nothing. The area around Monroe is dotted with cheese factories, and this coming weekend, September 19-21, is their time to shine.
The Square will be filled with festival attractions. The popular Cheese Tasting Tent is always the big draw on the west side. The south side of the Square is home to the stage and the ever popular Optimist's Cheese Curds stand. Get in line early for your cheese curds tickets, and remember to bring your patio chair … (0 comments)

food: Deli-ghtful Dining - 06/02/08 11:26 AM
If you are looking for a place for a quick yet satisfying lunch, skip the fast food. Visit to Monroe's Downtown Square and the Garden Deli.
The Garden Deli is the perfect spot to grab a quick bite to eat. It takes no longer than the chain fast food joints, yet the food is a world apart. Sandwiches are made to order from fresh ingredients. I am big fan of the turkey with spinach and provolone on whole wheat. They also offer white buns, sourdough, french and croissants for bread choices. Get the sandwiches hot or cold, whatever trips your trigger. … (3 comments)

food: A Sure Sign of Summer - 05/19/08 01:13 PM
After the winter that we had here in Wisconsin, summer has seemed a long time in coming. It is nearly Memorial Day weekend, yet we do not dare to put away the long sleeved shirts and light coats just yet.

Summer is slowly coming, though, and one sure sign is the opening of the Monroe Farmer's Market. The market opens this Wednesday, May 21. As in other years, the market will run on Wednesday afternoons and on Saturday mornings.

Things are expanding at the market this year. Plans are to enlarge the market to three sides of the … (1 comments)
