Local shutterbugs, it is time once again for the annual Monroe Arts Center Photography Contest and Exhibit. Everyone is welcome to enter, and there are two classifications this year, Junior (under 18) and Adult. This year’s contest and exhibit will feature three categories, which are Landscape, Portraits, and Unclassified. Participants may enter no more than two categories and a total of two photographs. All photographs must have been taken after January 1, 2009. They must be a minimum of 8 x 10, a maximum of 16 x 20, and must be framed and suitable for hanging in MAC’s Frehner

If you can look into the seeds of time, and say which grain will grow and which will not, speak then unto me. Another season of the the Shakespeare Project has wrapped up locally here in Monroe, and it is time for the youth to do their annual performance. The words of the Bard will resonate through the Monroe Arts Center tomorrow evening as the youth from the project perform acts from many of the timeless classics. The performances start at 6:30 pm. monroe arts center: From Swaziland to Monroe, Wisconsin - 03/29/10 12:22 PM
An interesting multi-cultural, mixed media exhibit is opening at the Monroe Arts Center Frehner Gallery this Thursday. "Message from Swaziland" was inspired by local artist Jennifer Rikkers' walk through parts of Africa when she participated in the 2008 Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation AIDS Walk Africa. Rikkers combined her photography with acrylic painting to create this exhibit highlighting the people of Swaziland who touched her so deeply during her walk through the country. Rikkers wanted to share the message of Swaziland's people, a people in a country that has been deeply affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis. 33% of the population

monroe arts center: Benefit Concert at Monroe Arts Center - 03/02/10 10:03 AM
We care deeply about people here in Cheese Country. An example of this will be taking place in a couple of weeks here in Monroe.The Monroe Arts Center will be the site for a benefit concert for the children of Haiti. The concert will feature a variety of local musicians, including Bill Rients of recent Pirate Night fame if you missed the concert. The concert will be on March 19 at 7:30 pm. Admission will be a donation at the door, $10 per person suggested. Reservations are also suggested for this event, and you can reserve your seats by calling 608-325-5700.All

Hold on to your hats! It is a busy weekend here in Cheese Country. The UW Alumni Club is meeting at Toffler's in New Glarus on Thursday evening at 8 to watch the UW Men's Basketball team play the Minnesota Gophers. If sports isn't your thing, come over to Minhas Brewery's Lazy Mutt Lounge on Thursday evening instead for Monroe Art Center's Poetry on Tap. Award-winning Wisconsin poets will read aloud from their works starting at 7 pm. This event is free, and there will be libations courtesy of Minhas. Are you looking ahead to the weekend plans? Here is a snapshot of area events in the upcoming days: ~ Behring Senior Center in Monroe has a Brat Fest every fall, and it is here again. On Thursday from 10 am until 6 pm, you can stop in for single brats at $3 each or a meal for $6 (brat, chips, soda/water, and a cookie). ~ The Young Professionals of Green County are playing wiffleball and kickball with the YP of Freeport on Saturday at Little Cubs Field at 2 pm. Fiire up the flash bulbs! The Monroe Arts Center is sponsoring the 20th Annual Photography Contest and Exhibit. This popular contest draws on the best of our local talent and culminates in an exhibit in Frehner Gallery at MAC throughout September. Who will take home the grand prize this year? There are three classifications: Junior, for youth under age 18 Beginner, for people who have no formal training and/or minimal experience Advanced, for people who have experience, training or who have been published. Everyone may enter up to two photographs. All entries must be framed suitably for exhibit at MAC.

What's shaking, bacon? There is a lot ~ Sign the kids up for free junior golf lessons at the Monroe County Club. All kids 13 and under are eligible for a free lesson to introduce them to golf. Call the Pro Shop at 325-3159 to register. I just spoke with them to sign up our children a little bit ago, and there are plenty of open slots still. ~ Don't forget the traditional balloon glow at the Fairgrounds this Friday and Saturday evening. All the festivities for the balloon rally take place over there this weekend, and walk-in admission is free.

What make a small town? As with so many things, size is in the eye of the beholder. I often refer to our community, Monroe, WI, as a city, but then a couple of days later, I will call it a town. It really is both, depending on your point of view. I grew up in the country, first on a dairy farm and then in a home that could not see a single neighbor. The nearby towns that I call my hometowns are each home to about 2000 people. Those to me are small towns. The closest city was Madison,

There is a lot going on in Cheese Country this first weekend in October!The annual Chili Cookoff and Oktoberfest is happening on Monroe's downtown Square on Saturday. Chili judging happens at noon, and all proceeds benefit Monroe Youth Hockey. There will also be face painting, a pumpkin patch, scarecrow making, balloons and music. The Monroe Farmer's Market is also running on the Square on Saturday from 7 am until noon.Before or after your visit to the Chili Cookoff, walk over to the library for the annual Monroe Stamp and Post Card show.
