A Silver Lining Our Current Southeastern Drought - 02/28/08 07:41 PM
The historic drought that the Southeast in currently in has one silver lining--construction isn't delayed as often because of rainy and frigid weather. Charlotte, with lots of homes still going up, can at least benefit from this, though new homeowners will still have to stick to mandatory water restrictions once they've gotten their keys. That being said, it might be a good idea to invest in landscaping that does well in drought-like conditions and cut down on the grand expanses of grass and perennials.
The Carolina Home Pros Team would love to hear about what plants you've tried and have withstood the test of Southern heat … (0 comments)

Back in the Saddle Again... - 02/28/08 07:00 PM
Bob Knight quit mid-season with the Texas Tech Red Raiders(www.texastech.cstv.com), but he'll back at work in a new job before their season is over. It's somwhat surprising given that the apparent reason for his retirement was fatigue from work--but leave it to Bobby Knight to "do it my way".
Knight will be back in action with ESPN (www.espn.com) as a commentator as Tech plays in the Big 12 Tournament. But how will he feel talking about his team rather than running the show? I'm sure he'll have some interesting things to say and it will, of course, be full of his … (0 comments)

Are They Heeeeerrrreeee yet? - 02/28/08 06:43 PM
Ikea is coming, but it can't get here fast enough for the thousands of Charlettoneans who have eagerly been awaiting it since the signs went up on the interstate in 2006. Though we still have one year of waiting before any Ikea purchases don't involve a treck to Atlanta or the most expensive shipping costs you've ever heard of, the prospect remains on-time for a Spring 09' opening and frankly, worth the wait.
If you simply can't live without all things Swedish and affordable, visit www.ikea.com.

Modern Meets Classical in Urban Condos - 02/28/08 09:39 AM
Ah, the "eclectic" look. Where anything goes--so long as it does actually go. Sometimes decorating a new (or reinventing an old) space can be daunting, but really the best way to get started is to look at what other people have done and learn from them. Take what you like and adapt it to your lifestyle--leave the rest for somebody else! It's all about your tastes and likes.
That being said, I've got a little bit of inspiration for those living Uptown. Urban style condos have become very popular in Charlotte and they certainly bring their own aesthetic of modern luxury … (0 comments)

Get Ready for a SOULabration in Charlotte This Weekend - 02/28/08 09:37 AM
If you drive around town this weekend and perhaps feel like Charlotte is a bit more crowded than usual--don't be surprised! Approximately 165,000 people will attend the six-day CIAA SOULabration being held in the Queen City for the third year in a row.
The SOULabration is centered around the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament (www.theciaa.com). Racefest Is Just Around The Corner - 02/22/08 11:34 PM
Mark your calenders now! The 2008 Charlotte Racefest Half Marathon and 10K (April 12) is less than 2 months away! I don't know about you, but after the holidays it always takes me a while to get back into a routine with my running. After parties and chocolate and too much time spent finding "the perfect gift", I've lost any semblance of an exercise habit (unless you count sprinting through the mall to get all shopping done in time). Signing up for an event always helps me to get motivated and get out there on the road. Another great tip is … (0 comments)

Tar Hell Blue or Blue Devils Blue? Or maybe you go for Clemson Orange? Whatever college colors you claim, Charlotte has a lot of ACC basketball fans. They'll be thrilled to know that the 2008 ACC Men's Basketball Tournament will be held in their own Bobcats Arena March 13-16--and that tickets can still be bought at www.theacc.com. This is a great family outing and a true show of our local passion for all things college basketball! STOMP is here!!! - 02/22/08 09:58 PM
Those of you with children who love to entertain the family with musical escapes on their home-made drum sets (i.e. your pots and pans) may be interested to know that someday your kids could use these skills to make a living. STOMP, the internationally acclaimed production, will be coming to Charlotte's Belk Theater starting Tuesday, February 26 and will do an eight performance run in the Queen City. This creative display of rhythmic acrobatics and trash can drum solos has been thrilling U.S. audiences since 1994 and will dazzle Charlotte audiences with an array of unique musical instruments made from seemingly … (0 comments)

Mint Hill Shopping Complex Finally Underway! - 02/21/08 07:00 PM
Ground broke February 7, 2008 for the new Bridges of Mint Hill shopping complex. Belk, Dillards, Barnes and Nobel and Consolidated Theatres are all on board for the Bridges. Similar to the Stonecrest complex in Ballantyne, The Bridges will contain freestanding stores and finished outdoor spaces.
The 1.3 million square feet of shopping space is a welcome addition to the community for most, but has inspired some controversy. The main issue that arose concerned the dislocation of the heelsplitter, an endangered species. Secondary issues arose from questions about traffic troubles that could arise from increased use of Lawyers Road and Baines School Road.

A Melting Pot For Uptown - 02/21/08 06:29 PM
The Second Ward in Uptown Charlotte will be receiving a face-lift thanks to approved plans for a new mixed income and mixed use community by Spectrum Properties. The Brooklyn Village project will provide housing for the Uptown core workforce at more affordable prices than many other units inside the I-277 Belt. Urban condos ranging from $200,000-$400,000+ should hit the market by 2011. A 5-acre park, office park, several restaurants and an array of retail shops will also serve residents.
Interesting note: The inspiration behind the name of The Brooklyn Project is the former Brooklyn Neighborhood that served as the nexus of Charlotte's African … (0 comments)
