charlote homes for sale: Charlotte Bobcats are going to the playoffs - 02/28/09 03:46 PM
This winter hasn't really been kind to the Charlotte Bobcats, but that's okay. They are three games away from going to the playoffs despite a difficult and sort of unsuccessful season. They are 11 games under 500 according to the Charlotte Observer. But that's no big deal because they have a shot at keeping their season alive, which is more than a lot of other teams have.
The Bobcats beat Golden State recently. I'm not going to lie, it doesn't take much to beat Golden State these days. Where Raymond Felton, the point guard and leader of the team score 26 … (1 comments)

charlote homes for sale: Tar Heels turn it around - 02/28/09 03:21 PM
Heading into the final weeks of the regular season, the North Carolina Tar Heels Men's basketball team beat Georgia Tech after Maryland beat them in overtime last week.
The loss to Maryland was not a good loss because Maryland wasn't ranked. Maryland seems to find a way to win at home against ranked ACC teams though. It is part of what makes the ACC a difficult conference to be in.
All of the problems that Carolina had last week seemed to be ironed out. All of their top producers on the court like Danny Green and Tyler Hansbrough both had big … (0 comments)

charlote homes for sale: Raptor Center in Charlotte NC - 02/28/09 03:10 PM
On the west side of town in Latta Plantation Park, there is a center that takes care of birds. It is dedicated to envirnmental preservation and providing education about birds of prey and their habitat.
This may seem weird, but this center is located inside the city. It kind of tells you how suburban and green Charlotte the city is. When you fly into the city from somewhere more urban, you really see the difference.
The raptor center is a favorite place for elementary and middle schools to send their children for field trips. They provide a home to a variety … (0 comments)

charlote homes for sale: Winter Storm in Charlotte, Huh? - 02/28/09 02:57 PM
Forcasters are predicting six inches of snow for Sunday in Charlotte NC during the day and some at night. It might make for a snowy drive on Monday in a place where many people are not used to snow and ice.
Many of you northerners out there might think that being unfamiliar with snow and ice is a good thing. You would probably be right. It also makes snow and ice much more special when it does come.
But it is funny here because when there is snow and ice, it seems like everyone in Charlotte rushes to the grocery store … (1 comments)

charlote homes for sale: Jonas Brothers Come to Charlotte NC movie theater - 02/28/09 02:48 PM
I read in the Charlotte Observer today that the Jonas Brothers, the ubiquitous musical group that is taking America by storm, visited a bunch of movie theaters to promote their new movie this weekend. They stopped by Regal Cinemas in Stonecrest, near Pineville and Ballantyne.
Nick, Joe and Kevin are surprising all kinds of people this weekend on their tour, which will take them all over the place on a private jet. They are met by screaming teenagers wherever they go.
They only jumped out of their car for a second before jumping back in and heading off to Atlanta. They … (0 comments)

charlote homes for sale: Quail Hollow Golf Tournament - 02/28/09 02:33 PM
I just heard some great news. The annual golf tournament that is held at Quail Hollow Golf Country Club in Charlotte NC, will go on as planned.
The tournament was up in the air because Wachovia was one of the banks that failed in 2008. It was bought by Wells Fargo quickly after a haggle with Citibank. There was some question whether it would be called the Wachovia championship as it has been for the past bunch of years. That has been cleared up now because it is going to be called the Quail Hollow Golf Championship.
Wells Fargo said it … (0 comments)

charlote homes for sale: CIAA Basketball comes to Charlotte - 02/28/09 02:15 PM
The CIAA is an athletic conference that consists of historically black colleges from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. Their annual tournament was held in Charlotte this weekend, and is always a lot of fun.
The teams play in Division II, so that means that none of them are playing to get into the NCAA tournament starting in March. Several North Carolina Universities participate, including Johnson C. Smith, a University in Charlotte NC. It took place at the Time Warner Cable Arena downtown, home of the Charlotte Bobcats professional basketball team.
In fact, this year, Johnson C. Smith won the whole tournament. They … (0 comments)

charlote homes for sale: Bore's Head at Lowes Foods in Charlotte - 02/28/09 01:45 PM
Here is the best kept secret in the south. For anyone who has been to or lived in the city in the northeast, delis are way of life. You can pop in and get a sandwich, or some prepared food or something.
In the south, most of the cities are suburban or have a more suburban feel to them. Grocery stores are the norm. I'm not sure what caused it, but there aren't a lot of deli sections in supermarkets that carry Bore's Head. In my experience, that brand is the only brand of bologne that doesn't taste like what it … (0 comments)

So let's say you're doing a 5k next week and really want to eat as much carbohydrates as you possbily can, but you don't want to just eat any old pasta.
Pasta and Provisions, in the Elizabeth neighborhood is the place to do it. It's one of the stores that makes that neighborhood in Charlotte NC sing.
Pasta and Provisions is a family owned grocery that stocks high end pasta products and makes their own pasta.
If you've never had fresh pasta, you have to try it sometime. Not only does it cook in a few minutes, but it really different … (10 comments)

charlote homes for sale: Andy Worhol in Charlotte - 02/21/09 03:46 PM
One of Andy Worhol's last works is being shown at the Mint Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte NC until May.
He created the exhibition, called Cowboys and Indians, in 1986.
Worhol was a sometime controversial artist who featured everyday items in his art. He got involved with a bunch of rock bands and put his stamp on American popular culture.
Perhaps after modeling a lot of his art after everyday objects in American life, Worhol may have turned his attention to history for inspiration. One of his works from this collection is a modified portrait of Geronimo. He also depicts … (2 comments)

charlote homes for sale: Poetry Slam at the Mint Museum in Charlotte - 02/21/09 03:35 PM
This free event is at Charlotte's Mint Museum. The Museum used to be Charlotte's Mint, a building built to press gold into coinage because of the huge amount of gold mined in the Charlotte area in the city's early days. It is located close to downtown in the Myers Park area.
The poetry slam will be Feb. 26 and fill feature poets performing their art. Like with most art, it might not be for everyone. The language and themes may not be apppropriate for some people or children. The event will feature a group of poets called the Concrete Generation poets … (0 comments)

charlote homes for sale: Elton John and Billy Joel face to face in Charlotte - 02/21/09 03:24 PM
March 7 will see one of the biggest shows in Charlotte for a while. Elton John and Billy Joel will play in the Charlotte Bobcats Arena.
Apparently, each one of them plays a set, then they join together and sing duets. They pick a variety of rock and roll songs, the event website says.
I wonder if they have to flip a coin to see who goes first. Going first is a bad thing in showbusiness I guess. But whoever goes first isn't the headliner. Maybe these two have been entertaining for so long that they've mellowed out and decided that … (2 comments)

charlote homes for sale: Charlotte Symphony offers variety - 02/21/09 03:07 PM
The Charlotte Symphony is a professional orchestra in the city that plays orchestral music for everyone to enjoy.
They also sponsor a pops schedule that brings a variety of popular music to the city that everyone can enjoy. Ok, well maybe not your 13 year old. But everyone else can enjoy some good clean music.
People who have come in the past as part of the pops program have been the Smothers Brothers, a fixture on network television, once upon a time. The duo brought their stage show to charlotte and the symphony lent them a hand promoting the show.
The … (0 comments)

charlote homes for sale: Fourth of July at Fort Bragg - 02/21/09 02:43 PM
North Carolina is home to one of the nation's largest military bases. Fort Bragg is east of Charlotte about 200 miles. There really isn't a good way to get to it on the road. I suppose if you have a military jet that you commute to work in, it's really easy to get there.
Fort Bragg is home to a bunch of famous military squadrons. The 101st Airborne is stationed there. There are a bunch of Special forces who call Fayetteville home. It is also a fun place to go if you really want to do Memorial day weekend right. The … (0 comments)

charlote homes for sale: UNC Falls to Maryland - 02/21/09 02:35 PM
For all you non-Tarheels out there this is for you. I might be writing more about the heels as March Madness approaches.
Maryland beat the University of North Carolina in Maryland again. Who knows what that means though in a year where one team has failed to dominate.
Other North Carolina schools, Wake Forest and Duke have held the top spot, but have slipped in the past few weeks. They occupy the 8 and 9th spots on some of the sports polls.
The Tarheels, after beating N C State this week went to Maryland and blew a 16 point lead to … (0 comments)

charlote homes for sale: Bobcats arena has a great scoreboard - 02/21/09 02:22 PM
The Charlotte Bobcats, the professional basketball team in Charlotte built a new stadium in 2005 when they started their first season.
The scoreboard in the arena was, at the time, the most advanced scoreboard technologically in use at a baskeball stadium.
The thing weighs 80,000 pounds. All those flat screen high definition monitors probably weigh less than what a cathode ray tube equivalent would weigh, but still weigh a lot.
It has a larger video screen and more advanced electronics in it than anyone else. The video screens are higher resolution than any arena in the country.
When you think about … (0 comments)

charlote homes for sale: Julius Peppers is leaving the panthers - 02/21/09 02:02 PM
Unfortunately, one of the Panther's best players and someone who has been the face of the team for seven years looks like he is finally on his way out.
Julius Peppers has made everyone aware that he doesn't want to stay in Charlotte anymore. The sports columnist at the Charlotte Observer, one of the newspapers in Charlotte that he might just be wanting to take a risk.
I have blogged about Julius a few times since he announced he wanted to leave. He is from eastern North Carolina and went to Chapel Hill. Maybe he just realized that he is a … (0 comments)

The guy who playe Frank Sinatra is back on tour with a new show called Red, Hot and Swing that is due to end tomorrow at the Blumenthal Performing arts center.
He's coming to Charlotte to do his show at the uptown performing arts venue in the heart of Charlotte's business and cultural district.
The show will be at the Booth Playhouse, which is a small and intimate venue that can change shapes and sizes.
It's like the movie Transformers. It has a stage that can acta as a normal stage, but the stage can be modified to accomodate a theater … (0 comments)

charlote homes for sale: McColl center for visual art in Charlotte NC - 02/14/09 03:50 PM
The McColl center for visual art was named after the former CEO of Bank of America. He retired a few years ago. Actually he retired in 2001, so he probably wasn't involved too much in this current banking mess.
The location of the McColl center was bought by Bank of America after sitting empty for ten years after a fire destroyed most of the building. It used to be a church downtown. The bank bought it with the intention of creating an urban artist's community, according to the center's website.
The community says that it is committed to being a stand … (4 comments)

charlote homes for sale: Live Blues in Charlotte NC - 02/14/09 03:32 PM
I blogged earlier about the Charlotte Blues Festival, that's still happening this weekend. I wanted use this space to call out a joint that has been hosting blues acts since 1973.
It's located in the Elizabeth neighborhood in Charlotte NC, and was established when the neighborhood and Charlotte looked a lot different.
The place started out as a pub - a risky business in Charlotte in 1973. It later hosted local musical acts and then moved on to hosting national acts. The first big show they had was the Dixie Dregs.
Musicians such as Stevie Ray Vaughn have played at the … (0 comments)
