ncaa basketball: Selection Sunday is tomorrow! - 03/14/09 04:05 PM
It's the big day tomorrow. Thousands of office pools will be circulated in Charlotte NC offices on Monday after the brackets are announced for the NCAA tournament tomorrow.
The people who run college basketball are probably hard at work deciding who goes where based on a bunch of information that is supposed to tell us how good each team is.
Most of the teams are probably already set in their place. But there are still some teams that are on the bubble whose performance in their conference tournaments will affect how they are placed.
Teams are admitted to the NCAA tournament … (0 comments)

ncaa basketball: ACC tournament in full swing - 03/14/09 03:35 PM
The Atlantic Coast Conference, one of the best college basketball conferences, is close, along with just about every other basketball conference, to finishing the end of its post season tournament. In many cases around the country, the outcome of the tournament will affect how the teams are seeded for the NCAA tournament, the big end of season tournament that people like to call March Madness.
The ACC tournament is a big deal in North Carolina because there are four universities from NC in the tournament. Many of those graduates find their way back to Charlotte NC.
This year finds Duke and … (0 comments)

ncaa basketball: Carolina Duke Game in Charlotte NC - 02/14/09 12:26 PM
It has come and gone. I'm talking about the first of two Carolina-Duke games this year. Each year, ESPN goes overboard to bring us a basketball game between two schools that really, really dislike each other.
This year's game saw the seniors of carolina sweep the Blue devils at their home stadium for the fourth year in a row. Carolina also scored more than 100 points on Duke, which is a feat nobody has acomplished in quite some time.
This year's matchup was particularly strained because it is Tyler Hansbrough's last year playing at Chapel Hill and because both teams are … (0 comments)

ncaa basketball: City Tavern in Charlotte NC - 02/07/09 03:17 PM
In addition to awesome ice cream joints, I visited one of the many restaurants in Stonecrest, a shopping center in the Ballantyne neighborhood in Charlotte NC.
City Tavern has several locations around North Carolina. One is in Wilmington, NC, another is at Lake Wylie, and still another is in uptown Charlotte.
It is what they call an upscale casual dining restaurant. They actually have a ton of seafood on the menu, which is what I was thinking about getting. I was planning an offseason trip to the Wilmington beaches that got interrupted. Seafood in Charlotte would have to suffice. Sometimes, you … (4 comments)

ncaa basketball: Bobcats game in Charlotte NC - 02/07/09 01:20 PM
The Charlotte Bobcats suffered a bad loss earlier this week when the Atlanta Hawks came to play them in Charlotte.
Apparently, according to the Charlotte Observer, the Bobcats had the lead, by seventeen points for some time. But they squandered it and lost.
It was a big game for anyone interested basketball players with local connections. Raymond Felton is the point guard for the Charlotte Bobcats. He's a good player, but putting him on the team was a really slick marketing move. Felton was one of the players who won a NCAA National Championship with the University of North Carolina Tar … (0 comments)

ncaa basketball: College hoops get hot in North Carolina - 01/31/09 02:43 PM
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University squared off in Raleigh today. The Tar Heels beat State by about 20 points. Things got heated in the last few seconds when State's Ben McCauley hit the Heel's Mike Copeland with a really hard foul with 1.9 seconds left in the game. Copeland got right back up and let McCauley know that he was really angry about it.
They both got a technical foul out of the deal. But Roy Williams, Chapel Hill's coach, sent Copeland to the locker room for the rest of the game because … (0 comments)

ncaa basketball: Duke really beat Maryland - 01/24/09 02:33 PM
In college basketball news, Duke really beat Maryland badly yesterday. They more than doubled their score and it was like that for most of the game.
Duke has climbed up the ladder this year to rank #2 in the nation. This game wasn't even a game even though there are some who think that Maryland had a chance of beating Duke on Friday. Maryland has made a point of beating Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium, Duke's tiny home gym, still in use from the 50s. It has happened before, and it will probably happen again. But it didn't happen yesterday.Duke fans … (1 comments)

ncaa basketball: The Tar Heels finally beat someone in the ACC - 01/17/09 02:34 PM

After a hiatus and a drop from number one in the sports polls, the Carolina Tar Heels decided to win one this week against Virginia Tech. It is a momentus occasion for a team who had all kinds of hopes for being one of the top teams in college basketball this year. Unfortunately, the Tar Heels have suffered some injury setbacks in the first part of their season. They lost Marcus Ginyard one of their best defensive players to an injury early. They also lost one of their best new recruits early to a severe wrist injury. As near as I … (0 comments)

ncaa basketball: Davidson's basketball season - 01/09/09 08:45 AM
Not like you can get any tickets, but Davidson has been playing some really big games lately. They played Duke the other night and almost scared them.  Davidson isn't ranked in the top 25 yet this year, but they really have a powerful weapon with Stephen Curry.  I've written about him before. He is the son of Dell Curry, who was one of the original Charlotte Hornets, before they moved to New Orleans. Dell scored more than 10,000 point I thought I heard them say on the broadcast.  He was an amazing shooter, I remember that.  He was part of the … (4 comments)

ncaa basketball: North Carolina Schools at the top of NCAA - 01/09/09 08:34 AM
Before you shout at me, I'm not taking sides.  But North Carolina schools are dominating the top five spots in the mens college basketball AP poll.  The ACC is a tough conference and I'm sure we will see some of these teams lose and they will spread out, but right now North Carolina College Basketball is really on top of things.
Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest are all at the top of the heap. Duke is 2th, UNC is 3th and Wake is 4th. I bet every bar in Charlotte is going to be jammed with alumi events for the … (1 comments)

ncaa basketball: Stephane Curry having trouble in Davidson NC - 12/20/08 09:48 AM
Stephane Curry is having a bad game at the Conseco Fieldhouse against Purdue. Don't get me wrong, he's a great player and he is having flashes of brilliance, but he came out of the gates 0 for 5.  There really wasn't much he could right in the first few minutes of the game.  He came down the court, shot the ball, missed and watched Purdue run the ball back down the floor to score.
That happened a lot in the first few minutes of the game. So much so that Purdue was up 21 to nothing after a while. That's almost … (1 comments)

ncaa basketball: Bobcats and the King of Basketball in Charlotte NC - 12/06/08 02:17 PM
Ok, so the Bobcats aren't doing that well.  They started out the season seven and thirteen. That is seven wins and thirteen losses. But, there's nowhere to go from there but up.
Rick Bonnell from the Charlotte Observer noted a Forbes Magazine study that listed the Charlotte Bobcats as worth $284 million.  Apparently, that is not a lot of money for a basketball team.
The bobcats are a very young team right now, but I think they have an enormous pool of talent and potential.  The NBA system is made so that every team has a shot at the championship … (1 comments)

ncaa basketball: Davidson College ranked - 12/06/08 01:31 PM
Davidson College, which is just a skip and a jump from Charlotte NC Real Estate, has been ranked 22nd and 24th in both of the major men's basketball sports polls.
Other North Carolina Schools in the rankings include UNC at number 1. Duke is number 4.  Wake Forest is currently ranked 17.
Listen, Davidson has made several NCAA tournament appearances and they are coming on strong. According to their website, they returned three starters and eleven lettermen.  This includes four of their top six scorers.
Stephen Curry is back as well. He is quickly becoming a star on the national … (0 comments)

ncaa basketball: Go Blue!!! - 02/22/08 02:29 PM
Tar Hell Blue or Blue Devils Blue? Or maybe you go for Clemson Orange? Whatever college colors you claim, Charlotte has a lot of ACC basketball fans. They'll be thrilled to know that the 2008 ACC Men's Basketball Tournament will be held in their own Bobcats Arena March 13-16--and that tickets can still be bought at www.theacc.com. This is a great family outing and a true show of our local passion for all things college basketball! Last year's Champion, the No.3 Carolina Tar Heels, are locked in a first place tie with the No.5 Duke Blue Devils at 10-2 in the … (0 comments)
