web development: Does how long your register a domain name for make a difference? - 01/14/10 07:21 PM
For 2010 I'm going to launch a couple new websites.  A burning question I've had is does it make a difference in how long I register it for?  According to Matt Cuts from Google, Nope, not really.  You should really focus on content and links before worrying about the number of years your registered.
There are varying opinions on this but I suppose I'm going to have to believe in the word from the top.

web development: How to link icons to your profile - 10/11/09 10:00 PM
In a recentl blog post I offered up some social media icons for use that were Active Rain themed.  There were some people who weren't quite sure how to use them.  So here's  a quick tutorial.
First you need to download the images to your computer.  Right click on the icon that you want and click save image as.  Name it something you will remember and save it somewhere you can find it. (I like using the desktop as a temporary place for images I'm going to work with quickly).
Next you will need to link the icon.  AR makes this … (5 comments)

web development: Social media icons for Active Rain users - Raindrops - 10/09/09 05:45 PM
I decided to take a stab at creating some social media icons.  I like the bottle caps that Jeremy and Bob have been using but wanted to do something more specific to Active Rain.  So without further ado here they are:
You can link this as a blog subscription button or to your active rain profile.  It's pretty much universal.

Here's one for Facebook.  You can use it to link to your profile or fan pages.

Here's a Flickr icon for you.

web development: Hobbs Herder - Yet another reason not hire Hobbs Herder to build your website - 10/04/09 09:02 PM
Hobbs Herder - Yet another reason not hire Hobbs Herder to build your website I received a call from a frantic SEO company who had been hired by their client to optimize their Hobbs/Herder website for better placement on Google.  It seems Hobbs/Herder was unwilling to return calls and he was desperate to know exactly what the story was and wondering if I could provide some insight.
Here's about all you need to know if considering Hobbs/Herder to design your website.  You, or anyone else, you might hire to work on your website besides Hobbs/Herder will not be allowed to do … (9 comments)

web development: "Project Impact" Dominating real estate the Walmart way - 09/09/09 01:03 PM

Want to dominate your market area?  Are you wondering how?  Well you could take after one of the biggest retailers in the world and focus on getting the business that steep discounts alone won't buy you. Walmart, the nations leading discount retailer, is launching a new campaign aimed at crushing the competition.  Coined "Project Impact" Walmart plans to focus on three initiatives to drive the competition out.
1. Cleaner less cluttered stores to improve the shopping experience.
2. Friendlier customer service.
3. Focusing on categories where they can beat the competition.

Two of these really aren't anything new … (75 comments)

web development: A question for any of you web gurus - 06/19/09 06:20 PM
When I had my site redesigned they built the headers and the footers using PHP.  It is really convenient for quick changes on the fly to be carried accroos the entire website.
My question is does it have any affect negative or positive on my SEO with my meta tags and title tags also included in the server generated scripting?
I know you're not supposed to have the same title, key words, or description and I've been creating new headers to address that.  Aside from that what other issues does it raise?

web development: Yeah we get Google juice but what about Yahoo! juice? - 06/01/09 04:53 PM
There's a lot of talk on Active Rain about Google juice.  No doubt if you're blogging here you've experienced it.  If not just head over to Google and type in any common real estate term.  Guranteed that somewhere in those search results is an Active Rain blog post.
So how is it that we get so much Google juice and you don't ever hear about a single drop of Yahoo! juice?  To answer that question you have to know the difference between the two.  Although they are both called search engines by the web community that term loosely describes the two … (41 comments)

web development: Building your own little widgets - 03/03/09 09:14 AM
I have noticed the numerous widgets that show up alongside some peoples blogs. Some of them are pretty cool and some people go a little overboard (sometimes less is more). One of my pet peeves is widgets that don't fit. From a design standpoint they look silly sticking way outside of the margins of your blog. I thought I wanted some buttons that directly benefited me and they had to fit. So I built my own. Actually I already had these on my website but they're more useful the more people see them.
I would maintain that a lot more … (6 comments)
