Today is the Independence Day of Finland. My aunt just sent me a note on Facebook about it, not that I had forgotten. I was born and grew up in Finland before moving to the states when I was 21, anyway...
Finland declared independence from Russia on Dec. 6th in 1917. or as we in Finland write it - 6.12.1917. Our current flag of blue cross on a white background has been in use since May of 1918. The independence day is on official holiday in Finland and it has been celebrated since 1919.

finland: Can you pass this Finnish traffic sign test? Humor. - 11/15/09 11:28 PM
If you ever would need - not sure why - to get a Finnish drivers license, or happen to drive in Finland here is a quick crash course test to see if you can pass and decipher some of the Finnish traffic signs.
Just to confuse things a little I have added some commentary - you can decide to believe them or not!

1. Lets just relax first with a cup of strong Finnish coffee :)

Maybe I am a bit late for this - it's already New Year in Finland! Onnellista Uutta Vuotta (Happy New Year in Finnish).
As my last post for this year, I thought I'd share how we celebrate the arrival of the New Year in Finland. This is what my family used to do on New Year's Eve.

Christmas in FinlandI grew up in Finland. My small hometown is located just above the Arctic Circle. And yes, this time of the year, you really don't see the sun. During the summer time we have 24 hours of daylight.
