bethlehem steel: Bethlehem SteelStacks Arts Center Gets OK from Bethlehem Planners - 09/29/09 12:01 AM

Yesterday the Bethlehem planners unanimously approved the SteelStacks Performing Arts Center to be built at the former Bethlehem Steel plant site.

Construction is set to begin this fall on the $25 million four-story performing arts center.  It will sit just south of the old blast furnaces.

The arts center will include a two-screen cinema that will show independent films, a bistro and an area called the PodZone.  The PodZone will feature furniture arranged around flat-screened televisions, which will allow patrons to do everything from sharing Powerpoint presentations to playing Guitar Hero.

bethlehem steel: Grand Opening Celebration at Bethlehem Sands - 06/10/09 02:41 AM

Tuesday, May 9th, was Bethlehem Sands Casino's Grand opening celebration.  Even though the casino has been open since May 22nd, it kicked off it's official opening at the former Bethlehem Steel's site.

Instead of a ribbon cutting ceremony, a torch was used to cut the ceremonial steel chain to the shrill clanging of a 650-pound whistle from the SS Normandy, a French cruise liner whose salvaged whistle was used to mark shift changes at the steel plant - at just about 1 o'clock.

bethlehem steel: HELP!! The Lehigh Valley in PA is Being Invaded . . . . By The Transformers!! - 06/03/08 07:02 AM

Big news for the Lehigh Valley area.  We are being invaded by the Transformers!!

Well, not really.  It turns out that the new "Transformers 2" movie, set to be released during the summer of 2009, is being filmed in south Bethlehem, where the old Bethlehem Steel blast furnaces are.  Filming started last night and will continue this evening and Wednesday evening.

The Bethlehem Steel plant is being transformed into a fictional, war-ravaged Chinese city or the movie.

The scenes from Bethlehem Steel will be featured in the opening of the movie, along with giant shape-shifting robots.
