horses: Demonstration by the Bethlehem, PA Mounted Police Unit - 05/18/12 08:03 AM
The Lehigh Valley Horse Council held their bi-monthly meeting at the Burnside Plantation in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on Thursday, May 17, 2012. The Bethlehem Mounted Police Unit put on a demonstration at this meeting showing their techniques for desensitizing their horses. Peek-A-Boo. Where's the police horse? They teach the horses to walk on tarps & mattresses. They toss balls, plastic water bottles at the horses and toss full garbage bags around the horses . . . . . and walk around the horses banging the drums.

horses: Rescue Of Horses From Devastated Horse Farm - 03/05/12 05:25 AM
This past week, tornadoes ripped through parts of the country causing major destruction and devastation, including lost lives. Animals and horses were also a part of it. This news clip shows the devastation of a certain horse farm and the rescue of the surviving horses. I feel for the victims. Several years ago, my farm suffered damage from a tornado. Fortunately, my horses were outdoors in a run in shed and were able to escape a direct hit. They came through with minor scrapes and bruises. After this incident, the horses were afraid

horses: Why Buy A Horse Property? - 01/25/12 09:58 AM
Why buy a horse property? Some consumers are on the fence as to whether or not to buy a horse property. The best thing to do is make a list of the pros and cons of owning a horse property. Here are some reasons for you to get started: 1- No more commuting to see and ride your horse. It is so much easier to just walk out your door. (And it saves on gas.) 2- You get to see your horse more often and in turn, build a closer bond with each other. 3-

horses: All I Want For Christmas . . . . - 12/16/11 09:34 AM
Christmas is a time for giving. Instead of spending mega bucks on material things that eventually will be pushed to the back of a closet and forgotten, rather than enjoyed, why not give by spending time with others. Time is the most precious gift anyone can give. As all of you know, horses are my passion. Not only do I aim to spend more time with my horse, but also with friends and relatives. Instead of spending your hard earned money (and for some of us, finances are tight) on something that will be forgotten,

horses: Horse Riders - You Don't Have To Understand Us! - 11/17/11 12:09 PM
A friend of mine shared this and I wanted to share this with my readers. It gave me a chuckle, yet it is so true! Fellow horse riders - I'm sure you will ALL agree! HORSE RIDERS - you don´t have to understand us! Real riders believe in the 11th rule: With the inside leg and the outside rein. We know that all external medicine is either waterproof, blue or yellow. We have no problem, to eat a sandwich directly after mucking the stable. We know, why a thermometer has to have a string attached on the end.

horses: Here's the Scoop on Poop - 10/28/11 02:52 PM
Want to hear the latest scoop on poop? That's right I mean the real thing. Manure. Here is an article titled "What's In the Manure?" that was written by the Bethlehem Mounted Police. This pretty much applies to any police department anywhere and actually anyone associated with horses. What’s in that manure? Quite often while we patrol on the horses, they have to take a potty break. We are often asked by citizens in the area at the time of the fertilizer deposit if the manure is safe or not. The following is a short answer. If you

horses: The Pennsylvania National Horse Show Ended With Great Entertainment - 10/25/11 02:41 PM
The Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg ended it's 10 day run this past Saturday, October 22, 2011 with great entertainment. The entertainment was Guy McLean. He is an accomplished, self-taught Australian horseman, and entertainer with a love for horses. Guy has developed training methods for building relationships with horses without using force by "asking" horses to to do the job. You can see the trust the horses have in him in his performances. Here he is barrel racing around 3 horses . . . . .

horses: Is Your Horse Property Winterized? - 10/06/11 11:10 AM
Autumn is finally here bringing the nice temperatures and nature's full colors. It is a great time to get out and ride without those bothersome flies and high humidity. Autumn is also a time to get your horse property winterized. Remember, the cold and snowy winters will be upon us before you know it. Is your horse property or farm ready for it? Begin by taking down the fans that were put up at each stall for the summer months. Clean them up and put them away so that are ready to bring out when needed next year. Next,

horses: Equestrians Share and Learn Much With Their Partners - The Horse - 09/29/11 08:44 AM
Equestrians share and learn much with their partners - the horse. Some may never understand, while others know well what it means. Being involved with horses teach equestrians more than just riding. I would like to share this video to help show the lessons learned and what is shared between human and horse.

horses: Wordless Wednesday - Anyone For A Ride? - 09/22/11 10:05 AM
On a beautiful, sunny day (believe it or not, we actually do get those once in a while between the rain storms) these gorgeous Percheron draft horses were hitched to a wagon and were ready to get to work and give willing adults and children rides. Even though it was a very warm day, they were troopers and kept on going the whold day.

horses: Wordless Wednesday - You Scratch My Back . . . . - 08/03/11 09:09 AM
I'm sure all of you have heard the saying "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine." Horses, just like humans, have a hard time reaching the middle of their backs to scratch that itch. Well, here Eddie and his best buddy, Banner, are doing just that. It looks like they are certainly enjoying it, too.

horses: Misunderstood Horses - 07/29/11 09:23 AM
During my 35 years of involvement with horses, I have watched them and learned a lot. Horses are huge animals (and they know it) that want to please. By nature, they are mostly peaceful animals. They would rather run than fight. Of course, there are instances where they are unable to escape, at which point they will battle. For the most part they are peace loving animals. Sure, some can be pushy and try to walk all over you, but that is where training comes in. It's very similar to a small child when they test you. They will

horses: Where Are My Barn, My Daughter and My Horses?? A Tornado Has Hit!! - 07/26/11 10:22 AM
Where Are My Barn, My Daughter and My Horses?? A Tornado Has Hit!! A tornado hitting is scary. It's even scarier when it hits your farm, involving your family and your animals. This actually happened to me a number of years ago when I had my farm. It was a hot summer's day where it was just too hot to ride during the day. Therefore, we rode in the evening, when the direct sun was not shining upon us and it felt a bit cooler. As you know, thunderstorms usually are common during the

horses: Riding Horses In The Heat - 07/22/11 10:17 AM
It's the middle of summer and much of the country is going through extreme heat and humidity. Horses can get heatstroke just like humans. Here is some important information about summer riding and signs of heatstroke in horses. Summer riding reminderThe Heat Index is the sum of the temperature plus the humidity. For example: If the temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity is 20%, then the Heat Index is 100 (80+20=100). If the Heat Index is less than 120, it is ok to ride. Start watching it as it rises above 120, at 150 your horse's cooling
