minnesota living: Just put another log on the fire... - 10/14/13 10:06 AM
Busy day of showing hunting land.  The last minute people are out looking.
If you have cash, you can still get a deal done.
WE walked several properties.  45 degrees or so and breezy.
It was wonderful.  Then we got an unexpected shower that soaked us to the bone.
Not so wonderful.   I was glad to be just a few minutes from homeand it was the last parcel.
I got home and turned up the heat.  I heat with wood and I had just started it a few days ago.  Considering everything, I heat the house for less than 5% it … (8 comments)

minnesota living: It's a Snowman Warning! - 03/02/13 06:55 PM
No, it isn't an invasion.
The temp is starting to climb and the snowmen are looking a bit ragged.

This once handsome fellow is going by the wayside.
We have been trying to keep him cool with Iced Tea, but we know it is only prolonging the inevitable.

I tried to get him to stay out of the sun, but to no avail.  Maybe next year he will listen!

minnesota living: Minnesota Living. - 12/01/12 12:20 AM
Jeff Foxworthy has hit it on the head.  Thisis what he found out about Minnesota...
If your town has an equal number of churches and bars...You might live in Minnesota.
If your vacation means going up North past Virginia...You might live in Minnesota.
If you measure your distance in Hours....You Might live in Minnesota.
If you know several people who have hit more than one deer...You might live in Minnesota.
If you see people wearing hunting clothes at special events...You might live in Minnesota.
If you think that Beer, Fish and Venison are the 3 major food groups...You might live in … (8 comments)

minnesota living: Where does the day go? - 11/14/12 11:23 AM
I just don't have enough time in a day.  I noticed it when Day Light Savings hit.  That 1 hour less daylight at night has put a crimp in my work.
Usually, I could show houses until 7pm, but now with the days even shorter, I need to be done at 5:30 or so.
I get up earlier and get some of my stuff done then, but the time is just frittering away.
They say that time really flys when you get older, andright now I must be over 95!

minnesota living: You may be from Minnesota IF... - 10/12/12 11:26 PM
Yup, it is that time of the year when most of the world thinks that Minnesota freezes over for the next 6-8 months.  Well, here are a few thoughts...Courtesy of Jeff Foxworthy...
You may be from Minnesota if...
If you have worn shorts and a parka at the same time...
If your Dairy Queen is closed from November to March...
If you often switch from heat to A/C and back to heat again...
If you can drive 65 miles per hour in two feet of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching...
If you carry jumper cables in your car and … (12 comments)

minnesota living: GOOD MORNING WORLD!!! - 06/02/12 10:53 PM
It is a beautiful morning. (at least in my back yard)
The sun is out, the birds are singing and I have yet to hear a bad word.
Granted, the day is early, but I am starting with a good attitude and hopefully good fortune will at least follow me if not catch up to me.
I am going to take a minute to smell the flowers, listen top the birds and then maybe even kiss my wife before I delve into the day.
Make it a great one on you end!

minnesota living: Down on the Farm. - 05/05/12 03:23 AM
You can take the boy off the farm, but you can't take the farm out of the boy!
This chicken was very interested in my camera.  I think it saw it's reflection in the lens.  The scornful look makes me feel like I was doing something wrong.

The Pigmy goats were indifferent to my presence.   I wasn't showing any food is why.

My uncle giving this Burrow a bit of attention.  He and his partner were part of a 'Wild Burrow' opperation from a few years ago.  (My uncle is not the partner)

Although a farm is hard … (7 comments)

minnesota living: It 'WAS' A great start to the day. - 01/16/12 06:53 AM
I awoke this morning and headed out to the lake...
It was a beautiful sunrise.

I boated over to my favorite spot, dropped in the trolling motor and started to cast.  After a few casts the first fish fell to my bait.
It was a nice 4 pound Bass.  I unhooked him and slid him back into the water to live another day.
I started casting and all HELL broke loose.   The phone rang and my wife was yelling at me to grab it.....Then...I woke up to 24 degrees and a sciff of snow on the ground.
It was … (12 comments)

minnesota living: Gone but not forgotten.... - 11/04/11 09:50 AM
AS I pack and check things for my short hunting trip, I think back to the fall
Although long gone, the beauty is still fresh in my mind.

These are pictures from my cabin deck.

A bit of slave labor from my grand daughter.  I was teaching a simple skill of screwing in small bolts with a battery operated drill.  It was just enough so she could understand how it worked and also not be scared of it.
Yes, most of fall is behind us...but the memories are still there!

minnesota living: But...I can't save money for a down payment. - 10/27/11 02:23 AM
I again heard this from a client.  We have him qualified, and all he needs to do is save $2000.  He has $1000.
He cliams he and his wife have no extra money to save.
"How bad do you want to buy a house?"  I asked them both.
"WE would do most anything," they both said. So we started.
Week day for work.  Both have office jobs.   Both buy all their drinks and meals from work or another restaurant.  When I explained that they did not NEED 5 latte's in a day.  Bring candy bars and chips from home. They … (13 comments)

minnesota living: Minnesota...This is One time you SHOULD keep up with the Jones's. - 10/23/11 01:26 PM
I am not going to burden you with all kinds of information.
The writing IS on the wall.
Interest Rates are at an all time low.   Most renters can purchase a home for about half of what they are paying for rent.
Homes prices are at levels that are unlikely to be seen again!
If you are sitting on the fence...then you need to think about keeping up with the Jones's!!!
It will not happen over night.  It may not happen in 2-3 years, but values of homes are going to go up.  They are already in many local's.  No, not … (4 comments)

minnesota living: It is Harvest time in Minnesota. - 10/08/11 01:34 PM
Actually it is harvest time in most of America.  But here in Minnesota, the farmers are in full gear.

Soy beans are the top priority right now.  With the beans at peak ripeness it is time to get them off the field before he start dropping on the ground.
The big green machines are working overtime right now.  It is extremely dry right now which makes for a lot of dust.  But it also makes for easy access for the marginal grounds that sometimes get planted.
So for today, the farmers are working fast before the next rain comes.  It … (9 comments)

minnesota living: Minnesota fall colors are rolling in on us. - 09/24/11 01:58 PM
Finally, we are seeing some fall colors in the middle of the state.
This landscape looked better this morning with the sun out.
In Northern Minnesota, the peak will hit in about a week.  Colors are just starting in the lower 1/3 of the state.
If you plan to be out leaf gazing, now is the time to get planning.

minnesota living: Who Turned down the lights? - 09/20/11 01:39 PM
I have been having some problems getting ll my outdoor work done as of late.  it is 7:33 pm and I almost need a flashlight to walk outside.
End of June we are still working outside until 10 pm and later.  Now, I am rushing to get the basics done before I can't see my hand in front of my face.
Now, I suppose this isn't all that bad.  I do get a chance to sit and relax for a spell before getting horizontal for 6 hours.
I need to make sure I have enough reading material because the BOOB … (11 comments)

minnesota living: It is a Beautiful morning up in the Minnesota Northland. - 09/14/11 04:11 AM
WE caught a break finally.  Some cooler weather.   I awoke to 34 degrees this morning.  And you know what that means...I need to put on an extra piece of clothing.
Yup, no more topless, (Not until noon or so). Need to put on a 'T'.
I know some are putting on flannel sheets and shivering just thinking of the coolness.  Not me.
  The sun is shining,
And the flowers are blooming.  Soon the leaves will be in full color as another growing season comes to an end.
Sound sad?  Not if you think about the upcoming new growing … (6 comments)

minnesota living: Out with the old...in with the New - 09/02/11 07:48 AM
The storms all across our nation this year have been enormous.  Irene is said to be the 10th billion dollar storm this year for the USA.
With that being said, the clean up still rages on.
Some people are bemoaning their loss of property and I can understand that, but building can and will be rebuilt.
Even more people are complaining about that old tree they lost.  Never see that in our lifetimes again.   I lost several trees and yes it is a loss, but I am moving on.
This tree was tipped over and so I cut it up.  … (8 comments)

minnesota living: I had the chance to hit the water this morning. - 07/31/11 11:41 AM
It has been a busy summer and not many fish are entering in my boat.   Not that I can't catch them, I just have not been out.
At 5:35 this morning the sunrise meet me.  I was the only one on the lake on the beautiful morning.  No wind and the lake surface was like a mirror.
This small fishing boat sat just waiting for someone to take it for a ride.
And last of all, my buddy.  He sits on the fallen tree most every morning that I get on this lake.
Fishing was great but the catching was … (6 comments)

minnesota living: Mystrey Abode... - 07/25/11 03:01 AM
This mystery picture is the home of, well, you tell me.

It is an abode for a member of Mother Natures creatures.  Like many of the human animal, much of Nature's animals look at their homes in similar fashion.
Some are very plain and work just as shelter and others have a more specific reason and are very intricate.
I will post the answer tomorrow.

minnesota living: Sometimes they just know you are on the way. - 07/24/11 03:44 AM
I lost a good friend not that long ago.  After the ceremony, a video was played of him talking about his demise.  I twas a stand up routine well within his character.  It eased the tensions of the day.  At the end, he called out...Lord, I'm a coming!  Today when I heard this one... It reminded me of this...
The Grave site had just finished and the skies were turning dark.  There was a flash of lightening and then a clash of thunder followed by a long rumbling.   The little old man who's wife had just past away looked at the … (6 comments)

minnesota living: We have lost our innocence. - 07/20/11 11:43 AM
This is so true.  WE have in many ways become a hardened people.  Thank Goodness for children.  they talk to anyone and don't see the disability...
A lady sitting in the Dr.'s office saw a woman wheel an elderly gentleman into the waiting room.  she parked him and went to register.  She was sitting sorta close to the gentleman and thought maybe she should make some small talk.
Before she could, a little boy slip off if his mother's lap and walked up to the elderly man...
He then said..."I understand how you feel...My mom makes me ride in a stroller … (5 comments)
