mother nature: Lakeshore re-hab...first come! - 06/17/13 05:47 PM
Everyone or thing has it's own idea of what home is and what their castle will be like. Some of settle for a lot less and some of us want less because of certain costs involved. Not often a lake shore property is up for the taking. This is the perfect place for the ones not worried about keeping up with the Jones's

mother nature: A spring coming out of hiding. - 05/02/13 05:30 PM
We were very lucky. 50-60 miles farther south and we would have had 12-18 inches of snow. A great storm most any winter...but MAY!!! Very unusual for even Minnesota. I went for a walk in my woods to see if spring is peeking it's head out. This what I found... This one I won't elaborate unless someone really wants to know. In a month or so I will see a turtle or two on this log. This 3 year seedling is doing well. I need to come back and trim some unwanted brush away to give it more

mother nature: I am glad the Weatherman is wrong...This time! - 04/11/13 06:52 PM
It has been blown out of proportion. At least in my area. I know predicting what Mother Nature is going to dole out is not all that easy as she changes her mind quickley. But of the 12+ inches we were supposed to get, we have about 3 so far and maybe a couple more tonight. I know I cuss those weather people often, but this is one time I am glad they were way off!

mother nature: What you lookin at? - 03/24/13 04:30 PM
One thing about Nature is that once they realize you are not going to hurt them...They become very friendly. Especially birds. I am guessing that is because they can fly to get away and know we can't match their reaction skills. Sea Gulls are some of the bravest. This one just begs to square off with me.

mother nature: "Oh don't let rain come down..." - 02/10/13 11:50 AM
Well that old song goes something like this. But my reason isn't because of a hole in my roof. It is because when the rain hits the frozen ground and everything else, it becomes ICE! I take 3 feet of snow over 1/4 inch of ice any day. So I am glad the rain didn't last long and we are getting nothing but snow now. BE SAFE!!! Even the birds are glad the freezing rain is gone.

mother nature: Being a Hunter doesn't mean that I kill everyting! - 02/08/13 07:15 AM
I know that for some people this is the vision they have. If it move we shoot it. Now, while that may be true of some people, that is not me. (Those people are not REAL hunters) I have a soft spot for the wild creatures around us. Many of you already know that. So, I am going to introduce you to 'Tweet'. 'Tweet' is my latest rescue attempt. When waling past my bird feeder this little guy didn't fly. I chased it down and brought it into the house. He has a sore wing that should heal in a

mother nature: The best restraurant out of town! - 01/22/13 06:05 PM
The best restaurant is out of town. Patons visit it every day and many more than once a day. This establishment caters to a wide range of clientele. The patrons are well behaved, and their tip is usually the great show they put on . Most bring many friends with them. No menu's are given, they just eat what is put in front of them. So, what place it this? It is Bill's Country Diner!

mother nature: I had a new visitor last night. - 01/17/13 01:32 PM
About 10:30 or so last night I went outside to fire up my furnace with wood. A few feet away from the door we have bird feeder. I saw something on the ground take off running. Looked sorta like a mouse but much faster. Couriosity got the best of me and I went to check it out. I could see a bump on the tree about 8 feet up and it just sat there. I knew right away what it was and ran for my camera. Once the flash hit it is wan't so happy about just sitting there.

mother nature: Technology I do Embrace. - 10/25/12 05:57 PM
For those who have followed my blogs over the last 4-5 years...time fly's when you are having fun...know that I am a Nature Lover at heart. I enjoy the outdoors and that includes hunting in the fall. I don't always have time to check my locations out as much as I would like. So, I let Technology in and I use Trail Cameras. These outdoor cameras have motion detectors and flash or infrared flash for night shots. The wildlife even get curious with the subtle infrared lights at night and will stand and look for 10 and even 15 minutes.

mother nature: A sign that fall is winning... - 10/23/12 05:28 PM
Fall has a grip and isn't letting go. The leaves are brown and the grass is dormant. And here is a picture of a milkweed that has given up is fluff for another year. Although, hard to see, know that the seeds being spread around will be to the delight of the Monarch Butterfly caterpillars come mid summer. So, yes it is hard to watch as fall hangs on and slowly slips away, knowing what is coming is worth waiting for.

mother nature: Sometimes the wilderness is right at our finger tips. - 10/23/12 04:19 PM
I love Nature and getting off the beaten path. Still waters run deep, but so do small swift streams. This one I came across a few years ago always intrigued me. Never took the time to grab a photo, but this weekend I took time. The funny thing about this place is that it is less than 10 feet off the road and across the road from my Step-sons home. It is down a steep bank but once down there it is an entire different world. You don't need to be miles from civilization to find Nature in it's most primative

mother nature: Nature protects it's own! - 10/21/12 06:36 PM
This weekend WE spent with the Grand Daughters. Being close to Halloween and a very nice day we took a Nature walk. One of the local park/nature areas has a mile long trail. Stationed along the trail are cartoon characters and other Movie characters that kids like. Any thing from Snow White to Batman. AS we walked along this slightly elevated wetland trail I ran across this Woodcock not 5 feet off the trail. Hundreds of people had filed past this bird and never saw it. I took several photo's from just 5 feet away. I then stood up and

mother nature: Nothing like running water... - 10/14/12 06:42 PM
Nothing like running water to relax a person and when it is a Waterfall, so much the better. My wife and I took a short overnight trip and made a stop at Gooseberry Falls, just north of Two Harbors, Mn.It has been very very dry and we didn't know what we might find. Many of the small streams were all dried up as we traveled north. Once there, we were able to sit back and enjoy the rush of the water. The North Shore along Lake Superior is a great place for a trip. Allow 3-4 days to hit all the

mother nature: Maaaan, What you lookin at?! - 09/24/12 02:00 PM
Mother Nature is all around us. this Grasshopper is just sitting minding his own business when I came along. Although not looking scared, they hoppers are always ready in an instant to disappear. Fall has another entire round of bugs we have to deal with. Box alder bugs and mud wasps are two of the many nuisances in my yard.

mother nature: Not all fall colors are in the leaves. - 09/16/12 06:12 AM
As fall descends upon us, we start o see more color. But as most people concentrate on the big picture of leaves in various colors we by-pass the little things. Much of our fall color has to do with small things. These berries are from a type of Mountain ash tree. The orange color is awesome against a mostly green background. These miniture looking apples are from a type of flowering crab tree. Not only is there a deep red color the the array of birds they attract a bit later adds to the beauty. Fall offers a lot

mother nature: A deep RED Sunset. - 07/10/12 06:52 PM
During the last full moon, the sunset was brilliant. The dark red is one I can't remember seeing any time as of late. Try as I may, I could not capture the true Brilliant color of this sun. Sitting on the water in my boat with fishing gear all setting our of the way I watched as this sun slowly sunk out of sight. Even with a larger image, you still can't get the full scope of this beautiful sight. Not bad, but maybe next time!

mother nature: And it is another round of storms. - 06/17/12 06:32 PM
Just one more time....how many of you are ready for an emergency or worse yet...a disaster. Non-Potable waterFlash lights and batteriesGenerator started and runsGasoline for generator.ClothingMoneyValuables in the safe (I didn't say which one or where)Food, enough for over a weekmedicationscleaning supplies The list goes on and on. We have emergency supplies in several places just in case one area gets hit and the supplies can't be used. Most of our

mother nature: April showers in May and june! - 06/17/12 01:22 PM
We have had our share of rain this year. A mini drought last year and little snow, but we are catching up fast. The one thing that all the rain and early spring has done is given us a lot of extra flowers blooming early. I was asked what kind of flower this was...I replied..."A Purple one!" It has been a bumper year for the Roses. The Veggie garden is starting to grow now that we are getting a bit of warm weather. Everything does better with some rain!

mother nature: No Fish Pictures...and a bit disappointing! - 06/10/12 06:50 PM
Nope, none that I can say were worth a photo this weekend. Yes, I caught plenty of fish and kept enough for a meal. But, these two loons entertained me a lot. They were only 75 feet or so from the boat and in now hurry to get away from me. I have never been able to get a shot like this one where they raise up and stretch their wings. Or a shot like this one. But the best shot, I missed. My wife went fishing with me. I forgot the camera in the car. We pulled

mother nature: GOOD MORNING WORLD!!! - 06/03/12 05:53 AM
It is a beautiful morning. (at least in my back yard) The sun is out, the birds are singing and I have yet to hear a bad word. Granted, the day is early, but I am starting with a good attitude and hopefully good fortune will at least follow me if not catch up to me. I am going to take a minute to smell the flowers, listen top the birds and then maybe even kiss my wife before I delve into the day. Make it a great one on you end!
