Erica was born in Anchorage, Alaska and had been visiting Sequim since her grandparents first moved there in 1975. While growing up Erica had moved many times, living in Alaska, California, and Texas. The trend continued into adulthood, and she lived in Massachusetts, Oregon, and again in Texas. When she was 17 she joined the United States Navy and proudly served as a Hospital Corpsman.

She finally moved to Sequim in 1993 and met her husband, whose family had been in the Port Angeles/Sequim area since 1912. Erica and Ron were married at Carrie Blake Park and bought their first home in Sequim shortly thereafter.

After living in so many different places, she and her family feel very blessed to live in such a majestic location. The Olympic Peninsula has something for everyone. It can be peaceful, yet exciting, safe and comfortable, yet adventurous and entertaining. We have the perfect balance of city and country.

Erica has always had a special interest in real estate. She has been known to sit for hours scrolling through listings on the internet, simply because she finds it fascinating. Sequim, WA - 2008 Irrigation Festival

In 1895, bringing water from the Dungeness River to the parched plains of the Dungeness Valley and Sequim, Washington was the dream of 4 pioneer settlers. They all agreed that "Water was Wealth" and worked together to convince the other farmers and settlers of the area that irrigation ditches were needed. After a year of convincing and hard work digging and building a flume, the headgate was opened.

For the past 113 years, Sequim has been celebrating the spirit of those 4 pioneers and their vision of irrigation to the Dungeness Valley. "Water is Wealth" has been the mantra all these years and irrigation waters are still in use through various irrigation districts. "The Sequim Irrigation Festival celebrates the initiation, development and support of the irrigation ditches which brought water to the once dry prairies of Sequim."

You can Discover the Treasure of Sequim at the 2008 Irrigation Festival. Make plans to visit the week of May 3 through 11. Many events are held prior to and during festival week.

Our festival royalty was crowned on March 1, 2008. Queen Jennifer and her court will preside over the festival and will be seen in many other parades and events throughout the summer. The girls have already won a 1^st place Float award at the Daffodil Days Parade in Tacoma.

Festival week starts off with the Arts and Crafts Fair on May 3 - 4. This street fair is fun for all and is held on Cedar Street. Live entertainment all day each day helps keep the mood festive. Local classic car owners have a car show and the Happy Tymers clowns will be around to put smiles on your face.

Also on May 3 is the Kids Parade. This parade is for children 12 years and younger. Prizes are awarded and everyone has fun. After the parade, head over to the Boys and Girls Club for face painting, games, and model making and crafts.

For the fitness fans, the Marunde Invitational Strongman Competition will be held. This event was started by Jesse Marunde, Sequim resident and International strongman who placed 2^nd in the 2005 Worlds Strongest Man competition. This year the competition will continue in his memory as he was suddenly taken from us last year by a heart attack. Jesse was 27. Logging competitions, Goldwing motorcycle display, Treasure car Show ‘n Shine, and a Tractor pull. Also a carnival is held on the school campus grounds.

And topping it all off, the Grand Parade. The parade will be on May 10. Groups from all over the Pacific Northwest come to Sequim to join in and watch the parade.

At 113 years young, The Sequim Irrigation Festival is the longest continuously running festival in the state of Washington.

A Consumers View on Things

I've been watching as the housing and mortgage industry has been in "crisis" It has brought a few questions to mind that I'd like to ask.

I feel as if Andy Rooney is my muse.

If there are "Prime" loans and "Sub-Prime" loans, why would anyone loan to a person or persons that are at risk of default? Wait, I think John MacArthur answered that one in his blog The History of the Sub-prime Implosion.

I was once told by my mortgage broker that I was "Golden". Is there a Mortgage Broker/Consumer Translation Dictionary? I can see it now, my broker sitting at his desk with phone in one ear (me on the other end of the line) and his Mortgage Broker to Consumer dictionary open on his desk flipping pages looking for just the right translation to say I have a good credit score. It's probably a chart with numbers in one column and adjectives in the other. I'd like to see this dictionary.

While going through the process of choosing a mortgage broker, I was given a Good Faith Estimate by each that I interviewed. What's with this form? I was told that it is a universal form. It looks the same from each broker, but it's not. One broker completes one line and the other completes a different line. They both say, "This is my fee." Then all the other fees that are supposedly the same, are listed differently. One has the whole amount listed. The other has broken down numbers that the.......well suffice to say, it is one confusing mess. I guess the form is universal but how it is completed is based on each broker's ingenuity. Let me tell you, next time, I'm making my own form. Let the broker call me with questions. Where's that dictionary?

And now the government wants to get their hand in on the game. Help out those folks who got into those sub prime loans and are now at risk of loosing their homes. Ummm, that sounds like the blind leading the blind. Our great government can't even balance its own check book and now they want to help individuals near forclosure. Here's a thought; let the market do its thing. It will correct itself without any help. It may take awhile, but it can do it.

Communication Haiku

He has been writing haiku's for the Mortgage/Creative Writing Challenge. I would say that his creative genius rivals his financial and communication genius. You can find his work at Active Mike's Minute. There are 17 in all and he has been posting at least 2 each day.

I've been inspired to write a haiku of my own. I thought I would share as it focuses on a small aspect of our job of communicating with our clients. I will preface this by saying that I have probably broke a couple rules of haiku, but I do stick to the 5-7-5 format.

Sequim, WA Relocation Public Transportation

In today's economy of rising oil prices, (the per barrel price hit $109 yesterday), people are looking for ways to save money at the gas pump.

Some folks are ecologically minded and have purchased hybrid cars. Not only are they saving in gas purchases, they are not harming the enviroment through use of the electric engines.

Some people have dusted off their trusty old bicycles and ride them to and from work. There is one man I know in Sequim who still rides his 1965 Schwinn around town.

As for me, I've begun riding the bus. I figured that by buying a $36 monthly pass, I'm saving about $100 per month in fuel costs. That was before this latest hike in gas prices took affect.

Before you ask, "But Kathy, how do you show properties to your clients???" I'm not an actively licensed agent. I get paid weekly by my boss, the broker, to keep the office open and available to anyone who might need us. Active Rain is my attempt at bringing clients in the door via the internet or AR referrals.

Clallam Transit is the company that gets me to and from work. They have 12 Routes that span the whole county. Most routes focus on Port Angeles and shuttles people to Peninsula College, the Lower Elwah Reservation and other areas in town. The busses connect Diamond Point to Sequim on the east side and on the west, Forks and Clallam Bay to Port Angeles. I travel on Route 30, the Port Angeles/Sequim Commuter.

Clallam Transit is also partnered with other bus companies on the Olympic Peninsula. If you wanted to go shopping in Port Townsend, you can pick up a connecting Jefferson Transit bus in Sequim. You could even travel around the whole of the Olympic Peninsula on a day pass through the partnership of the Jefferson, Clallam, and Grays Harbor Transit companies.

Clallam Transit is a great way to get around the county for all reasons.

Sequim, Washington - Carrie Blake Park

Every town in the US has a city park of some sort. A place for all their citizens to gather together, celebrate, relax, or play. Carrie Blake Park serves that purpose for Sequim.

This wonderful city park sits on approximately 35 acres on the east side of town along Blake Ave.

It is a wonderful park that has may activities for the young, old, wildlife, and pets. Carrie Blake Park has been and continues to be a favorite gathering spot for Sequim residents and visitors for years.

Carrie Blake Park is home to Sequim's convention center, The Guy Cole Convention Center. Outside the center are picnic areas and a gazebo. This is a popular place for wedding receptions in the summer.

There are swings and jungle gyms for the little tikes and a skate park for the older and more adventures kids.

The Olympic Discovery Trail travels through the park and makes for a great walking or biking trail.

On the Water Reuse Park side, enthusiasts sail their RC sailboats each weekend at the small pond there. In the summertime, you can go to the outdoor theater for music and a movie. The music is provided by the Sequim City Band. The movies are family friendly and enjoyable for all.

Bring your four-legged friends to the off leash park to romp and play with his friends.

As you enter Carrie Blake Park you are greeted by the beautiful Friendship Garden that was dedicated to Sequim's sister city, Shiso City, Japan. It is a beautiful garden and well taken care of by Master Gardeners.

Other events held at Carrie Blake Park is the annual Hurricane Ridge Kennel Club Dog Show as well as Senior Softball at the two ball diamonds.

Sequim is proud of her Gold Medalist, Matt Dryke. In 1984, Matt won gold in the Skeet Shooting competition. He also holds the world record for the 200x200 shoot. A plaque and bust of Matt is proudly displayed at Carrie Blake Park.

Ski Hurricane Ridge

Hurricane Ridge is one of the Pacific Northwest's premier tourist spots. Located in the Olympic National Park, Hurricane Ridge is 5,240 feet above sea level and boasts some of the most beautiful views in the nation.

Olympic National Park is a natural playground for locals and visitors alike. Hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing, and skiing are just a few of the many things a person can do in the park.

Yes, I said skiing.

Hurricane Ridge Ski and Snowboard Area is one of 3 remaining ski lift operations in national parks. The courses are groomed and perfect for the beginner as well as the advanced skier. It is a small family oriented ski operation that won't hurt the pocketbook. Hurricane Ridge boasts 1 poma lift and 2 rope tows. Lift tickets may be purchased at the ski trailer at the ridge. Day passes cost $25 for all lifts.

Ski equipment rentals are available at the Hurricane Ridge visitors center on the lower level. This is skis only. If you are a snowboarder, rentals must be made elsewhere. In Port Angeles, the best place to rent snowboarding equipment is North by Northwest.

Hours of operation are Saturday and Sundays only from 10am to 4pm and some holidays during the winter season. This season lasts from mid-December to March. Hurricane Ridge receives up to 400 inches of powder each year. It's great skiing fun. I know families who plan their weekends around "skiing the Ridge."

When you arrive at the park, there is a $15 entrance fee. Or you can buy an annual pass for just $30. This is a great deal as you can plan many other weekend vacations to any part of Olympic National Park and enjoy its wonders throughout the year.

The Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Club also provides a 6 week ski & snowboard school for children from toddler age and up. Other offerings at Hurricane Ridge in the winter are snow shoe hikes, a place for sledding, and cross country skiing.

From Port Angeles to Victoria

One of the best ways to visit Canada from Washington State is by boat. The most well known ship that provides this service is the MV Coho. She is a vehicle/passenger ferry that plies the Strait of Juan de Fuca between Port Angeles, WA and Victoria, BC.

The Coho was built in 1959 and named for the beautiful silver salmon that can be found in the waters all around Washington. She is 341.6 feet long, 72 feet wide, and has a draft of 12.6 feet. She is operated by Black Ball Transport, Inc and can carry 1000 passengers and up to 110 vehicles. Her clearance is 14 feet which allows semis to travel between countries easily.

Traveling to Victoria from Port Angeles is a grand adventure. If you planning a day trip, the best way is to go is to walk. No, I don't mean walk across the water. Ride the Coho to Victoria and walk to all the different sites within town. The trip to Victoria is approximately 90 min. Victoria is a great place for tourists as many of its points of interest are right there within walking distance from the Coho. The Empress Hotel, Parliament House, Royal British Columbia Museum, and my son's favorite, the Chocolate Store are just a few.
