A Special Gift from Nova Scotia!

If you ever visit Nova Scotia, there is at least one thing that you HAVE to do. You have to go to the lighthouse at Peggy's Cove. The granite rocks at Peggy's Cove are a wonder of nature. The water is deep and during a storm the waves are known to climb higher than the top of the lighthouse.

It can be a very dangerous place to visit. You don't turn your back on the waves and you don't walk on the wet rocks. People have been swept off the rocks and never seen again. If you respect the posted warning signs you will have a safe and enjoyable visit. Visitors to Nova Scotia often remark that Peggy's Cove was a highlight of their trip.

While at the lighthouse site many people visit the extensive gift shop, which features wonderful local products. The on site restaurant is a great place to stop and enjoy very tasty homestyle cooking.

In addition to the appeal provided by the lighthouse, Peggy's Cove is well known as a fishing village. You can stroll along the wharf, see the fishing boats and chat with local lobster fishermen.

It took my breath away, I had to stop and shoot it!

As I was driving to work one morning this week, I was astounded by the beauty around me. This is part of my regular route and it is always beautiful. That morning, it was dead calm with beautiful light. I had to stop and take these photos. The mirroring of the landscape in the water is amazing. The white in the lower right of the second photo is a reflection of a cloud in the sky. The third photo is also a shot of the sky, reflected in the water. These photos were taken in West LaHave along the LaHave River in Lunenburg County, on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.

You can't do that, you're a girl!

I often think of the things I am thankful for, ... daily, in fact. I am thankful for my family. In particular, I am thankful for my paternal grandfather. He taught me that my opportunities were limitless, that I could be, do, anything I wanted.

The first time I came up against "You can't do that because you're a girl.", I was 16. It was quite a shock. I thought, "Oh, no, I'm a girl - is there a cure? Why didn't someone tell me? Is it terminal?".

I already had unshakeable confidence, it's my grandfather's fault. I was not about to let a little thing like being a girl, hold me back from doing what I wanted.

I fell in love and married a man who reinforced what my grandfather taught me. With my late, ex-husband, I grew into "I am woman, hear me roar." Again, I am thankful.

Now, I am a grandmother. I hope that someday, my granddaughter looks back at her time with me, and is thankful that I am part of her family. I hope that she is thankful for something she learns from me or for some way that I support her.

Oh, by the way, I AM a girl and I CAN do that!

Natural Disasters and Power Outages - We, Canadians, help our American cousins and they help us.

I have been reading some of the posts about the recent power outages, in the US. I understand that many people are still without power. My associate just told me, this morning, that emergency crews have been formed by the Nova Scotia Power Corporation. Her son was given a few hours notice that he was part of a crew that was being sent to Georgia. They arrived there yesterday.

A few years ago there was a terrible ice storm in Quebec, power crews from neighbouring US states, mobilized to help. Local power companies do not have the resources to handle everything that mother nature throws at us. It's comforting to know that we are willing and able to help each other, at times like this.

I wish all those repair crews speedy success in restoring power.

Will your discount brokerage do THIS for you?

I have a list of professional services that I provide to my clients, on the south shore of Nova Scotia, in Lunenburg County. My list of services is probably similar to the lists of other full service providers. When I am interviewing a lead who is considering using a discount brokerage, I make them aware of the value I add, as a full service provider.

In addition to the services I list, there are services I provide because of an unforeseen circumstance.

There was the time I got a call from a buyer agent who wanted to see the property with an hour and a half notice (Nevermind that she knew several days in advance, that she would be showing that buyer homes. But that's another story.)

My seller client was having a garage sale that day and was not well prepared for a showing. But she sucked it up and agreed to the time. I immediately went over to her home, to see if I could help. I tidied the kitchen and checked the bedrooms. Her teenage daughter, who was helping with the garage sale, had not made her bed. I made the bed and hurried outside to help relocate the items from the yard sale. We were able to improve the curb appeal before the buyer arrived. My client was thrilled that I had shown up to help out. Would a discount broker do that?

Recently, I was on the phone with my client when he locked the keys in his car. He was flustered and didn't know what to do. He asked if there was anything I could do to help. I called a company that is qualified to deal with such situations and called him back to let him know help would be there in fifteen minutes. He was very appreciative. I am there for my clients in many ways, adding value to my service.

When clients work with full service providers, there's no telling what extras they may get. When they work with me on the south shore of Nova Scotia, in Lunenburg County, I go the extra mile.

Will I see you in Nashville?

I'm going to Nashville next week to attend the Exit Realty Convention. I've never been to Nashville before and it really wasn't on my list of places to visit. But, I'm sure I will enjoy it. We will be going to the Oprey while we are there. I don't know who we will see.

I'm wondering if any other Active Rainers are going. It would be great to meet a few people "live and in person".

The Housing market has already benefited from the 25 BILLION DOLLAR Announcement!

It has been reported that local residents are so excited about the coming economic boost, that they have already started buying houses!

A young shipyard worker, who was a little reluctant to become a home owner because of an uncertain future, took the plunge yesterday. He bought a home because the $25 Billion contract means a career for him. No doubt, this story will be one of many such stories as more people get confirmation of their positions, as part of this project.

It will be interesting to see the effects this project has on the housing market in Halifax and all across Nova Scotia.

This place is a-buzz! Good News is travelling at break neck speed!

Halifax has been awarded the contract to build 21 ships for the navy over the next 30 years, at a cost of 25 BILLION DOLLARS. Speculation, about the effects on the economy, is spinning.

Shelburne is expected to pick up business that will be referred from Halifax. Since the ferry service from Shelburne to the US was cancelled 2 years ago, Shelburne's economy has sustained heavy damage. This may be the boost that the Shelburne economy needs.

There are signs that Liverpool may also be getting some economic benefit. This will be a real boost to the local luxury housing market that has seen prices plummet since the Shelbune ferry service was discontinued.

I'm so excited. There is a beneficial wind blowing my way!

Wow! Can you believe it? 25 BILLION dollars will flow into the Nova Scotia economy over the next 30 years, from a government contract that was awarded yesterday. Irving Shipyards of Halifax won the military combat contract. They will build 21 new ships for the navy.

It will mean thousands of new jobs. That is good news for many industries including the Real Estate Industry. Housing demand in Halifax and the surrounding area will go up. So will prices.

Housing prices have been stable, with only small increases, for many years. Interest rates are low. This is a great time to buy property, now, before prices rise. Contact me, if you are interested in property on the South Shore in Lunenburg County, NS.

What's up Activerain? My draft post is a bit wonkey.

I have been working on a post in draft mode. Something is definitely wrong with the editing feature. I can see the draft post as it should be. When I click edit, the graphics and my signature information disappear. I am smart enough not to save the edit view - I'm afraid I really will loose the work I have done. It must still be there somewhere. Everything is where it should be in Post Mode.

What has happened to my post? Both the WYSIWYG and HTML views are missing the same data. I'm calling 911 on this one. Hellllllllllllp!

What are you most thankful for?

It is Thanksgiving weekend in Canada! I have given some thought to the things in my life that I am thankful for. I am thankful that I am Canadian. I am thankful that I live in beautiful Lunenburg County on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.

I am thankful that I have love in my life. I am thankful that my family is healthy. I am thankful for my wonderful friends, that includes my ActiveRain friends who live in my computer. I am thankful for the great weather we have had this weekend. So many things, the list goes on and on. But, what am I MOST thankful for? Hmmm.

After some careful consideration I realize that I am most thankful for my good health. As my parents have often said, "Without your health you have nothing". Because I am healthy, I can give love back to those who love me. I can give to my community. I can play in the "Rain". I can be a comfort and support to others. I can enjoy the beautiful day. I can set goals, plan my action, do my business. I can be fit and feel buoyant.

To celebrate my Thankfulness for ALL that I have, I will walk with my husband on the beach, in the sunshine and know I am healthy and be profoundly thankful.

Steve Jobs - What a Legacy!

Steve Jobs has had a profound effect on the world. He was certainly a visionary. There is no doubt about that. He changed our lives forever. He understood the importance of user friendly and brought the mysterious world of computers into our offices, our homes, our brief cases, our purses and our pockets, in an easy to use format.

I had just started working in the retail computer industry when the MAC 128K was released. I bought one and started loading my recipes into it. I thought it was wonderful. I remember how I marveled at MacPaint, and what fun I had with it. We have sure come a long way.

Steve Jobs was a visionary genius who came along at just the right time in history. He has left an unbelievable legacy. May he rest in peace.

The Three Best Things about Fog.

Here on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Lunenburg County, on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, we get fog from time to time. I understand the beauty of a clear sunny day, but I also see the beauty of fog.

These are my three favorite things about fog.

1) It redefines the landscape and waterscape around you.

2) I love the mournful sound of the fog horn.

3) It changes sound in the most amazing way. It is quiet and still, yet sound travels long distances. In the fog, I can hear people talking on their boats. Something that is inaudible on a sunny day.

Capture the moments in your neighborhood

I like to take frequent walks through the Kentlands and Lakelands communities in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The exercise is good for my body and watching for the changing colors of the seasons is good for my mind. When you focus your camera on a beautiful flower or a leaf than has fall coloring, it is easy to set aside the problems of the day. Life is better when you are willing to accept the gifts of nature.

An Activity Worthy of a Sunday Afternoon!

My friends Audrey and Wolf have a lovely cottage, on Caribou Lake, in Nova Scotia. They love to feed the hummingbirds. I sat under their birch tree watching the birds, there were at least eight of them. They are so tiny and move so fast, it's hard to keep track of where they are and where they are going. If you watch closely you can see a couple of them in this short video.

I don't know what I did wrong, The embedding didn't work. Any suggestions? OK now it's even stranger. I can see the video in the WYSIWYG view, but when I post the blog entry it isn't there.

You'll never believe what happened when I entered the Vbloggers Contest.

I said I would enter the contest, but getting the entry ready took a lot more time than I thought it would. It was a marathon! In addition to the activities that normally fill my day, I had to learn a lot of new things, to put this vblog together. There was the filming and editing which I had done before. But this time there was also searching for the "How to's", to put the video, music and narration together. Eventually, I had all the pieces I needed and felt I had a suitable entry.

The next step was upload it to Youtube. Well, for some reason Youtube threw up everytime I tried to upload it.(NOT a reaction to the content, I hope.) Apparently, Youtube was having a problem with my format. After many tries, I got it formatted to please Youtube, and it uploaded. Ahhh the fruits of my labor. :-) I was very pleased with myself.

There is a simple way to add "In Case of Emergency" contacts to your phone. It's not an app. It is simply using your existing contacts function and adding ICE (In Case of Emergency) numbers so they can be easitly found by others, if you are unable to talk. Read Craig's blog about it and immediately add these names to your contacts list, if you haven't already done so.

Safety Tip: Do you have ICE on your cell phone? You should...

This is not the same as having your phone on ice. ICE is an acronym for In Case of Emergency.

This idea has been around for a number of years, yet not everyone is adapting.

The reason for ICE on your phone is to help emergency first responders if you are unable to talk in a situation. Without this information first responders are unable to communicate with persons that may need to know about your status. Your phone is frozen like it's on ice.

In today's world, almost everyone has a cell phone with them at all times. If you are unable to communicate in an accident, a first responder can look in your phone, find the ICE contact and call that person to alert them to what is happening. It's to your advantage to have this contact information in your phone.

Think of it like car insurance. You always have it. You hope you never need it. But when the time comes to use it, you're glad you've got it.

Putting ICE on your cell phone is simple. Go to your contacts list. Create a new contact. Put the letters ICE as the first name with a hyphen and the name of the person to contact. Then add their phone number.

Maybe you want to have multiple contacts. Your spouse. Your Children. Your parents. You could have more than one and simply enter them as ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 and so on.Go ahead and take a minute. Add ICE to your cell phone today.

An ounce of prevention, is worth a pound of cure.

Thanksgiving Twice. The Best of Two Traditions. In Lunenburg County on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, Canada, many of our neighbours are Americans who live here for 3 to 6 months of the year. When it comes time for Thanksgiving, we celebrate both the American and the Canadian traditions. Both celebrations are similar. We share a love of turkey with all the fixins' and the company of friends and family to help celebrate.

This year October 10, is the Canadian celebration and November 24, is the American holiday. I have provided a count down clock, from zoodu.com, for both events. Even with two Thanksgivings we never run out of things to be thankful for.

Mona Gersky wrote a blog about including your name so that it prints in your comments below your photo. I also wrote a blog about it 6 or 7 weeks ago. We should all use our names in that space and not a company name.

My mother made an interesting observation from a non ActiveRain member's viewpoint.

She's been enjoying the commentary to the blogs almost as much as the blogs themselves. All the online conversations and discussions really flesh out the real estate profession for her and probably other public readers.

Her observation? You know the area beneath each person's photo that allows for whatever identifying information we choose to put there? Well, she finds it frustrating when there is only a company name. I admit, I agree with her.

One of the most interesting things to me (and Mom) and other readers is to associate someone's name and location with their photo or avatar. When I see familiar photos after one or two times I know that Karen Anne in Texas, Tammy in Georgia, Sheila in South Carolina, Clint in New Mexico, J. Phillip in New York, Kristine in New Jersey, janeAnne in Asheville, NC or Cyndi in Murphy, NC are back to visit. (There are actually dozens more I could name here, but I think my point is made).

Is this a conscious decision to identify photos with companies or do people not realize they have some control over that information? People do change companies, but they usually keep their names. What would you rather your name be associated with? The company you presently work for? or who you are and where you are from?

Mothers do make the best observations sometimes (then there's also the whole eyes in the back of their heads thing - but that's another blog) and it usually takes someone with a little distance from a situation to have the best viewpoint.

Weigh in on this, I'm really curious...and thanks Mom for the blog fodder!

Atlantic Salmon Jump Here!

Atlantic Salmon Jump Here! I recently visited Grand Falls Newfoundland, home of the Exploits River. The Exploits is a salmon river and as you drive along the river you can see anglers patiently trying to hook one. Every summer thousands of salmon make the trip back to spawn in the interior of Newfoundland.

I took these photos from the observation deck at the Salmon Ladder coffe shop.

You can walk down the hill to the salmon observation building and watch the salmon as they wait for their opportunity to take the next leg of their journey.

We had a fresh salmon for dinner that my brother caught the previous day, delicious!

The Ten Best Things About LaHave, Nova Scotia. I have been living in LaHave Nova Scotia for over thirteen years. It is a beautiful little village that follows the LaHave River and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a fabulous place to live in Lunenburg County on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.

#1 - It is the home of the LaHave Ferry, which connects the communities of both sides of the LaHave River, in Lunenburg County on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.

#2 - It is five minutes from the LaHave River Yacht Club. The Yacht Club is very active with sailing lessons for the kids, racing nights for sailors and events for power boaters. Friday Night Happy Hour provides snacks and entertainment. All of this in a fantastic riverside setting. You won't find a better yacht club in Lunenburg County on the South Shore of Nova Scotia

#3 - It is home to the world famous LaHave Bakery. People from all over the world come to LaHave just to experience the character of the old LaHave Outfitters building and sample the "natural ingredients only" selection of breads. My favorite is their Herb Cheese Bread, although the Raisin Orange Bread is great toasted for breakfast. It would be hard to find a better place for weekend brunch or lunch any day, in Lunenburg County on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.

#4 - Folks in LaHave have mail delivery to the Post Office. You never know who you will meet when you pick up your mail. The Post Mistress is a great source of local and regional knowledge in Lunenburg County on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.

#5 - The Fort Point Museum showcases four hundred years of local history. It is surrounded by natural beauty and is a great community gathering place. It is operated by the Lunenburg County Historical Society and run by a diverse group of fantastic, fun volunteers in Lunenburg County on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.

#6 - On the museum grounds you will find a Symbolic Mi'kmaq Village. The third week of August is the Mi'kmaq Acadian Festival. Many families from Louisana have traced their heritage back to the Mi'kmaq and Acadians of Nova Scotia. Every year some of them make a pilgramage back to Lunenburg County on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. The Festival features the culture, food and music of the Mi'kmaq and Acadian people.

#7 - The best meal of the season is the Annual Fort Point Museum Lobster Supper. The Lobster is fresh from local fisherman, the accompaniments are made by the fantastic, fun volunteers of the Historical Society. You have to book early, it sells out in Lunenburg County on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.

#8 - One of the most active church groups in Lunenburg County on the South Shore of Nova Scotia belongs to the West Side United Church in Pentz, just a few minutes from LaHave. Dinner Theatre, Fall & Spring Lunches, Bazaars and Summer Flings are just some of the events they host.

#9 - The area is very proud of it's community school. Pentz Elementary School is a small rural school with great teachers, great heart and a fun playground in Lunenburg County on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.

#10 - LaHave has it's own community beach, tucked around the back side of the Fort Point Museum grounds. There are many other beaches just a short drive away in Lunenburg County on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.

LaHave's population doubles in the summer as property owners return from Germany, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arizona, Florida, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia to enjoy a little paradise in Lunenburg County on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.
