los lunas: BOSQUE FARMS FAIR NOT JUST FOR CHILDREN - 08/09/10 04:02 AM
The 2010 Bosque Farms Fair came off as usual this past first weekend in August. Families with young children are the first and main focus of this annual event, and this year was no different. Horse events like western pleasure riding, reining and barrel racing abounded, with several age classes including adults, but only a few of the latter participated. Inside and outside were the usual art displays, canned goods competition, and church and political party booths. Outside was the rodeo arena and the food, lots of it from barbecue to sno-cones.
For us grown-ups, besides the food, there's a great … (0 comments)

los lunas: RURAL RETAIL BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY - 07/28/10 05:56 AM
I've been told that when WalMart made plans to open its first store in Belen, New Mexico some years ago, they thought it was bound to be a small store. What these business people from Arkansas did not realize was that Belen is a vital small town known as the Hub City in New Mexico, the junction of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway and the I-25 and I-40 corridors. Belen is an easy commute to a population base of over 3/4 million consumers in and around Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. The original WalMart store was a smash success, and soon … (0 comments)

los lunas: Bosque Farms Basics - 07/26/10 07:04 AM
Bosque Farms is in the middle of the high desert of New Mexico. The long trump suit in our playing hand is the Rio Grande River, which forms our western border. Without irrigation water from the river and occasional help from above, our verdant lawns, gardens, pastures and fields of grass and alfalfa hay would dry up. Water is of paramount importance to our farming community. Bosque Farms' motto is “Preserving Rural America,” and at our house we’ve done our best since 1991.  We are Brian and Laura Warden of choicesrealestate.com in Albuquerque.

los lunas: The Wardens of Bosque Farms, New Mexico - 07/26/10 06:57 AM
Laura Warden and I grow some fine chemical-free vegetables and grapes here. Bosque Farms lies a few miles south of Albuquerque, New Mexico. We Wardens have no heavy equipment, so our soil is still soft enough to dig by hand with a round shovel. After a rain, even the riding arena soil often trampled by 5 horses is arable. We are able to support our own family on the produce from our half acre garden. What we don’t eat, we freeze, pickle or can. Last year we filled a medium-sized chest freezer and exceeded 200 quarts of canned goods. Jars of … (2 comments)

los lunas: A RAINY DAY IN BOSQUE FARMS - 07/26/10 06:47 AM
Bosque Farms. With a weed, the trick is to uproot it while the fertile sandy loam soil is wet and soft. You’re going to get muddy, but there is no choice if you want to save your veggies without prior service from your tiller! Uprooting by hand is impossible when it’s dry. The plants break off at the ground, leaving all those roots to produce several tops instead of just one. You’d be just making more work for yourself. After the rain is a good time to pull weeds. Most will ask, “Why get rid of one weed at a time … (1 comments)

los lunas: Valencia County Commissioners Vote Against Agricultural Preservation! - 02/03/09 04:03 AM
On January 21st, the Valencia County Commission voted 3-2 to approve a zoning change on 40 acres of irrigated Rio Grande Valley farm land from A-P (Agricultural Preservation) to RR2 (residential 2.5 acre minimum), despite a unanimous recommendation against the proposal by the Valencia County Planning and Zoning Board, and despite nearly unanimous opposition from neighboring property owners.
The zoning change request came from land owners John Whisenant, an Albuquerque real estate developer, and Elias Barela, a freshman State Representative. The deciding vote came from Valencia County Commissioner Georgia Otero Kirkham, Barela's first cousin. Kirkham refused to recuse herself on the … (0 comments)
