valencia county: Valencia County Commissioners Vote Against Agricultural Preservation! - 02/03/09 12:03 PM
On January 21st, the Valencia County Commission voted 3-2 to approve a zoning change on 40 acres of irrigated Rio Grande Valley farm land from A-P (Agricultural Preservation) to RR2 (residential 2.5 acre minimum), despite a unanimous recommendation against the proposal by the Valencia County Planning and Zoning Board, and despite nearly unanimous opposition from neighboring property owners.
The zoning change request came from land owners John Whisenant, an Albuquerque real estate developer, and Elias Barela, a freshman State Representative. The deciding vote came from Valencia County Commissioner Georgia Otero Kirkham, Barela's first cousin. Kirkham refused to recuse herself on the … (1 comments)

valencia county: Keeping Bosque Farms Rural and Horse-Friendly - 05/08/07 11:54 AM
Bosque Farms has always been an agricultural and very horse-friendly community...but this once sleepy, rural little town has recently begun transforming into a primarily residential area that is mixed with agriculture, and this has been a concern for many long-time residents
You've probably seen this happen elsewhere; it's typical for folks to flee the crowded urban scene to pursue their vision of a bucolic lifestyle. But their vision often doesn't include roosters crowing at dawn, farmers baling hay in the wee small hours, or, especially, the smell of manure! So they go to work exercising the force of their incoming numbers to try … (6 comments)

valencia county: Bosque Farms: Visit Virtual Tour Today! - 05/07/07 12:17 PM
Bosque Farms is such a great place to live!I wanted everyone out there to have a chance to visit right away, at least virtually...
As I've explained before, my wife and I have really loved bringing up our daughters in Bosque Farms. It is one of the few places that still has that true "small town" community spirit, where folks know their neighbors, and, indeed, know most of the rest of the town! Our local community fair, active 4H clubs, great village facilities for Little League and soccer teams, horse shows and rodeos, playgrounds for the small fry and basketball, sand volleyball, and tennis … (3 comments)

valencia county: Los Lunas Rail Runner: Making a Good Thing Better! - 05/02/07 10:46 AM
Plans are being made to make the Rail Runner service an even bigger plus for Los Lunas and surrounding areas, according to a report in the Valencia County News Bulletin this morning.
During the Los Lunas Village Council meeting last Thursday, it was announced that an advisory board of Los Lunas residents was being appointed to consider ways the Rail Runner station in Los Lunas might help further the economic and transportation goals of t he village. It is reported that there is already great ridership in the Los Lunas area, and it is expected that this will only  get better as … (0 comments)

valencia county: What makes Bosque Farms a great place to live? - 03/24/07 04:12 PM
My wife, Laura, and I have lived in Bosque Farms, for many years, and have found it a great place to raise a family.
Where else in the Albuquerque area do local residents preserve an old-fahioned, annual Community Fair, complete with family-friendly activities like a greased-pole contest, rodeo, and talent show? This generations-old community tradition offers plenty of opportunities for local kids to show their rabbits, sheep, poultry, and other farm animals; to exhibit and win blue ribbons for their art work, baking, garden produce, or canned goods; to dig for coins in the money pit or enjoy Sno-cones or hot dogs while … (0 comments)
