The Grey Man of Pawleys Island

The Legend of the Gray Man has haunted the residents and visitors of Pawleys Island for decades. The Gray Man is most notably characterized as a grayish ghost like figure that appears before hurricanes and storms to warn beach goers of impending danger. Legend has it that the Grey Man has made an appearance prior to every hurricane for the last 100 years.

Little is known of the origins of the Gray Man but there are several theories of his identity that has made themselves legend. The most widely known theory is one of a young couple during colonial times that became separated. The woman lived with her family on the island. When the young man returned to see his heart’s desire he became so excited that he tried to cross the marsh instead of using one of the causeways. This turned to be a fatal decision. During his trek across the marsh the man became stuck in mud and drown. Days later after the funeral the young woman took a lonely stroll on the Pawleys Island beach. During her walk she saw a strange grayish figure appear that look remarkably like her long lost love. He told her to leave the island at once. She immediately ran home and told her family of what she witnessed. They left Pawleys Island the next day and stayed at a house on the mainland. That same day a horrible hurricane swept on Pawleys Island and destroyed many of the houses there except for the house of the girl and her family. Ghost of Pawleys Island.

Its October already here which means its time for Halloween and ghost stories! Pawleys Island is home to several of the most famous ghost stories in South Carolina. The stories of Alice Flagg and the mysterious Gray Man haunt the residents of Pawleys Island year round and have become local folklore among the residents.

There are several accounts to the story of Alice Flagg that have be able to captivate the residents of Pawleys and surrounding areas, but the basic premise is that of a love stricken young woman kept from seeing her true love. Alice Flagg lived with her brother and mother at the seashore home of the owners of Wachesaw Plantation in 1849. Today this home can be found in Murrells Inlet and is known as “The Hermitage”. Alice fell in love with a young man that her family did not approve of. Lacking social stature and wealth, the young man was advised to stay away from Alice, by her family. Despite this he proposed to Alice and gave her a ring. Knowing to well what her family would think of the engagement Alice kept the ring hidden on a string around her neck. Attempting to pry Alice from love’s grasp, her family sent her away to Charleston to attend school. While in Charleston Alice became very sick. When word of Alice’s condition reached Murrells Inlet Alice’s brother went to Charleston to retrieve his sister. However, due to the conditions and length of colonial travel Alice’s condition got worse on the way home. Soon after Alice reached Murrells Inlet she slipped into a comma and died. During the funeral preparations Alice’s engagement ring was found. Disgusted at the thought of Alice being engaged to “a commoner” her family threw the ring out and tried to hide the engagement. Legend has it that to this day Alice is still searching for her ring. Visitors to Pawleys Island can visit Alice’s grave site where many say that if you walk around the grave 13 times Alice will appear to study your ring.

Lets Go Crabbing!

The Atlantic Blue Crab is a native to the waters of Pawleys Island. They can be found in the creeks and inlets of Pawleys and Georgetown. Many of the locals and visitors to Pawleys enjoy spending their relaxing time “crabbing”. Crabbing is the act of catching crabs. There are many different methods to crabbing however three are among the most popular in Pawleys Island. The most tedious of the three techniques involves tying a piece of bait to a string or line and luring the crab close enough to the waters edge to scoop them with a net. Great patience and determination is required for this technique but the rewards are worth it! The second method of crabbing evolves using a drop net with bait secured inside. When a crab is believed to be in the net, the net is pulled up and the crab is taken out. The third method of crabbing tends to be the lease taxing and involves little continuing effort. This method requires the use of a “crab trap” or sometimes referred to as a “crabpot”. The design of a crab trap can vary widely, but nearly all varieties are made out of wire mesh The crab trap is usually cubical in shape. The crab trap contains two to four "entrances" that allow the crabs to enter, but not exit. Commercial crabbers use larger version of these crab traps. If you ever make it down to Pawleys Island, meet us in the creek and we will show you the best crabbing holes!

Locals and visitors of Pawleys Island can often be found enjoying this lowcountry favorite. Frogmore Stew is a local dish originating from the seaside community of Frogmore, South Carolina. It is known as a quaint dish that is sure to fill your appetite and savor in the relaxing lifestyle that is Pawleys Island. Here we present a version of this dish, but remember this stew is meant to resemble the carefree people making it, so feel free to customize it and make it all your own!

INGREDIENTS

3 quarts water
1 lemon, halved
1 medium onion, halved
coarse salt to taste
3/4 cup Old Bay Seasoning TM
1 1/2 pounds medium red potatoes, scrubbed
1 pound smoked sausage, cut into 1 inch pieces
4 ears fresh corn, shucked and broken in half
1 1/2 pounds unpeeled, large fresh shrimp
1/2 cup butter, melted

DIRECTIONS

1. Bring the water to a boil in a very large pot. Squeeze the lemon juice into the water, then throw in the halves. Add the onion, salt and Old Bay. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover, and cook for about 10 minutes.

2. Add the potatoes and sausage; cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the corn and cook for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the shrimp. Let sit covered for 5 minutes or until shrimp are pink.

3. Drain, all the ingredients and dump them out on a big sheet of news paper. Kick off your sandals and grab your favorite beverage. Huddle around the table with friends and family to enjoy this Pawleys Island favorite.
