Fire safety for your home, tips and most frequent causes, education is power.

Do you know those times in life when it seems like everything around you is hinting at something?
You know those times when a theme, or song, or phrase or something just seems to keep popping up like life or someone is trying to tell you something.

I have had one of those moments for the last couple of weeks.  De-ja-vu, the eerie feeling like something bad will happen if I don't react.

House safety is a very important aspect of real estate and life in general.  One major problem that can arise in your home is Fire.

The pastor of my church lost his home to a fire about 9 months ago.  He has been brining up the loss of his home and his reactions in church lecture as a means of telling the congregation that even a pastor has dilemmas in life, obstacles thrown at us to see how strong we really are in our faith.

Today our association of  REALTORS for Pinal County, WPAR, sent out a message to all agents in our association.  The message reads as follows:

Good Morning:

There was a house fire out here in Arizona City on Saturday and the family that was living in the home has 7 children.  Their youngest was born on Friday!!  They are staying at the Holiday Inn right now but have to be out tomorrow.  This family needs a place to live but of course under the circumstances they are low on cash/household goods.  I know times are rough for everyone but just wondering if we can help somehow.

How tragic the news is and yet at the same time the fact that no one was seriously injured is a true miracle.

I have not ever lost everything I own to a fire, in fact I have never been in a house fire since I was 11 months old and cannot remember the events, but I do know what the cause was....faulty wiring.

Leading causes of house fires

Cooking: 40% of house fires start from cooking; leaving items unattended on the stove/or in the oven and leaving items such cooking utensils too close to the stove/oven are the most frequent offenders.

Smoking: Most fires started from smoking happen from a cigarette, cigar or pipe coming into contact with upholstered furniture. In most cases this occurs when a person falls asleep smoking. The biggest majority of deaths due to house-hold  fires comes from smoking incidents.

Heating:  Is the second highest cause of house-hold fires and also is the second leading cause of deaths due to house-hold fires.  The largest number of house fires caused by heaters are caused by space heaters and usually happen between December - February.

Electrical: Electrical fires are caused by lighting or electrical systems in the home.  Lighting fires are usually caused by either using a wattage of bulb that is above the recommended amount or from something being placed over or on a bulb such as cloth being placed over the top of a lampshade.

Ways to prevent house fires and safety notes

Use only licensed electricians if you should need to have electrical work performed

Have additional outlets installed if you find you are using extension cords for extended periods of time (extension cords are only meant for temporary use)

Always plug appliances directly into the outlet in the wall

Never remove the grounding plug from an appliance

Never leave the stove or oven on unattended

Make sure no objects are too close to the stove or oven when in use

Never smoke in bed and if possible smoke outside or away from furniture and linens

If using a space heater always follow all manufacturer guidelines and never place anything directly in front of a heater that is being used

Make an escape plan and practice the escape route and make a designated meeting place for your family in the event of a fire

Make sure your house is equipped with no less than one smoke detector per level and a smoke detector should be within 10 feet of every bedroom.  Batteries should be tested weekly and changed every 6 months.
