larry thornberry: One Step Closer to Florida (Presidential primary election) - 01/11/12 10:29 AM
The New Hampshire primary is in the history books for 2012.  Mitt Romney is number 1, Dr Paul is number 2.  The only news is that former Governor of Utah, Jon Huntsman, is number 3 with 17% of the New Hampshire vote.
The pundits have made one accurate observation.  We expected to have to defend capitalism against the President's continuing attacks –  but it appears that Romney is suffering from attacks on capitalism from Republicans.  This will weaken the Republican party and our eventual nominee in 2012 more than anything I have seen in the race so far, in my view.

larry thornberry: More to the Story of Mario Rubio - 09/07/10 10:51 PM

I want to return to the subject of Marco Rubio and his family because the story carries such an important message for all of us at this time in our history.
My regular readers will recognize the name of author Larry Thornberry of Tampa.  I have had the pleasure of knowing Larry for more years than either of us will admit.  Among other literary pursuits, Larry is a regular contributor to The American Spectator magazine.  He provides me with his articles with kind permission for me to publish them in my blogs.  I enjoy his knowledge, his opinions and his writing … (4 comments)

larry thornberry: Mass Senate Race - 01/19/10 03:22 AM
Quote from Tampa writer and friend Larry Thornberry…
“I’ve resisted making a prediction in the Massachusetts senate race. But my New England sources are telling me that a formation of pigs has been spotted over Ipswich.”

larry thornberry: Florida can have a Conservative Senator in 2010 - 07/27/09 04:30 PM
One of the unusual features of Florida politics is that the powerful positions of Speaker of the Florida House and Florida Senate President do not translate well into elections to state-wide offices.  The legislative bodies select their leadership on merit – which, as we know, has nothing to do with elections. So the most powerful forces in the Florida legislature are only elected representatives of their local districts with little name recognition with the state wide voters.  The news coverage of their deft management of legislation (we hope) and superb management and negotiation skills (well, sometimes) is not widely absorbed by the voter … (1 comments)

larry thornberry: Just Who is the Republican Party in Florida - We are going to Find Out. - 05/14/09 07:19 PM
Some of us, dissatisfied with the last election, are already talking about the next election.  It is a little like the ads that remind you of the number of shopping days left before Christmas (starting in July).  In Florida, we have the guaranteed big spending contest - an open seat in the US Senate.  Senator Mel Martinez has announced his retirement when his term expires (2010) and several Republicans have their eye on the prize (Democrats too).
I present comments from Larry Thornberry, writer, contributor to The American Spectator and all around Man about Town in the Tampa Bay area of Florida.

larry thornberry: Senator McCain visits Florida - 09/17/08 08:20 AM
I am offering a second dose of Larry Thornberry this week because of the campaign visit to Florida by Senator John McCain and Larry's coverage of the Tampa event as a journalist.
Senator McCain was traveling without his secret weapon this week as Governor Palin returned to Alaska to supervise and commemorate the deployment of units of the Alaska National Guard including her son on an assignment that will lead to a tour of duty in Iraq.
I am concerned with the political posturing by many officials. including Senator McCain, about the current economic problems.  Government regulation is not the only … (1 comments)

larry thornberry: Weather update on Hurricane Sarah - 09/17/08 07:43 AM
I have included the views of Larry Thornberry, a writer friend of mine living in Tampa, in these pages before.  I usually agree with him and I always enjoy his writing style.
In a recent article for the American Spectator Larry talks about the remarkable enthusiasm generated by the selection of Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska as the Vice-Presidential running mate for Republican Senator John McCain.
It is easy to come under the spell of Governor Palin.  She connects with voters and audience members of every stripe.  Her values and political policies seem to flow naturally from her every day life.  … (0 comments)

larry thornberry: The Lessons of 1996 - 08/01/08 10:10 AM
Nominate a war hero, senior senator known for effectiveness and consensus building across the aisles and send him forth to do election battle against a younger, eminently slicker candidate who can really wind em up with his stump speeches that don't say anything but make ‘em smile all the way to the voting booth.  And then wonder why we end up with a Democrat President.  And I am not talking about Senator McCain - I am talking about Senator Bob Dole, the nominee that the Republicans fed to Mr Clinton 12 years ago.
Now, more than a decade later - do … (11 comments)

larry thornberry: It's going to be a Bumpy Ride (again) - 06/04/08 06:52 AM
Those who choose to subject themselves to my opinions on a regular basis in these pages know that I am nearly apoplectic on the subject of global warming - real or imagined. I note in passing that Senator Obama stated in his victory ( ? ) speech last night that this was the moment that the sea level rise in the oceans would stop.  I am sure that we are so relieved that as we put our life jackets back in the closet, we will support an effort to name a book in the Bible after him... but I digress.

larry thornberry: The Search for Vice begins - 03/06/08 12:19 AM
Florida Governor Charlie Crist attached himself to Senator McCain’s star before the Florida primary in January.  Crist’s last minute strong endorsement for Senator McCain may have changed the outcome of the Florida vote and created the momentum that carried Senator McCain through Super Tuesday and to the nomination of the Republican Party which he has clinched this week.  And all the Governor wants, is has been said, is the number 2 spot on the ticket.
Well Senator McCain is on his way to his appointment with destiny – and the question of who he may pick for his running mate … (8 comments)
