A recruiter for the 2010 US Census stopped in my office today. He said they are looking for a few thousand workers on Cape Cod, nd over a million workers nation wide. The work is up to 40 hours per week worked, and will only be for a few weeks in April and into May. The hourly pay rate is $16 per hour for between 25 and 40 hours per week worked. Orleans is in the Lower-Cape area of Cape Cod. It is bounded by Harwich, Chatham, Eastham, Brewster, the Atlantic Ocean,and Cape Cod Bay. Less than half of the properties in Orleans are second homes (40%+-). Orleans' beaches are part of the National Seashore and are on The Atlantic Ocean. Even with its high second home percentage, Orleans had very few of its homes in pre-foreclosure as of May 6, 2008. Harwich, Massachusetts is one of the older Cape Cod towns. There are homes with lead paint and victorian looking exteriors. Harwich looks like other old New England towns, but on Cape Cod. Harwich has a lot of "old" money and old famlies. There are almost as many who summer here as live year round. Harwich likes to say it is midway between Woods Hole (Falmouth) and P-Town. On May 6, 2008, there were just over 1900 properties in the pre-foreclosure stages in Cape Cod towns. That is only 1.3% of the 140,000(+-) homes on the Cape. Less than half of the homes on Cape Cod are actually second homes, and commercial properties are not included in the 1900. Most Cape Cod homes are owner occupied, contrary to popular thinking. Some communities within the Cape do have more than 50% vacation home or investment status, but for the most part, the Cape has a year-round economy. Sandwich is on the north-western edge of Cape Cod.
