That is precisely what a 20-something neighbor – a young lady I'd never met before – said to me as we both lounged by the pool recently. She delivered the fabulous news in-between text messages she was exchanging with a girlfriend that was sitting right next to her. At first, I turned around to see who else she might be talking to – then graciously said "Thank You" as I buried my head back into the latest issue of AARP magazine.

A Healthy Dose of Reality Can Ruin Your Whole Day (If You Let It)

To say that my neighbor's comment 'hit me like a ton of bricks' is an understatement. Quite frankly, I didn't know whether to feel incredibly flattered – or incredibly depressed. Either way, her unsolicited declaration triggered a pensive, nostalgic journey down memory lane. Specifically, I began to think about major shifts in communication styles which have essentially transformed how we relate to each other on a professional level. Since the business world has always been – and will continue to be – survival of the fittest, we often find ourselves desperately riding the waves of technological evolution – or risk getting left behind. Meanwhile, although I absolutely, positively embrace technology, it is of this well-preserved, middle-aged woman's opinion that certain things never go out of style.

What Can I Say? I Like Vowels

When it comes to text messaging, I am unfamiliar with the ins-and-outs of 'text speak' – on purpose. Personally, I text like I talk using grammatically correct words and sentences – including punctuation. And, I'm pretty sure it drives some people crazy. It's just that I don't care much for misinterpretations and in my experience, texting abbreviations and partial expressions tends to leave too much room for error. Now, don't get me wrong. In many cases, I will text 'short and sweet' messages (albeit using sentence structure that would make my high school English teacher proud.) However, when it comes to business conversations, one should expect lengthy-War & Peace-quality-text-messages from me. Rather, how about a phone conversation instead? When it comes to the 'Misunderstandings Department,' a solid phone conversation has rarely let me down in the past. Of course, both parties must be willing to dial a phone. Oh, did I mention that I still use phrases like 'dial a phone' too?

Hey Carie! Nice To Meet You

As I continued to reminisce about the days of yore, I distinctly remembered 'face-to-face' as being the Gold Standard when it came to sales and relationship building. Back then, we essentially had to meet with people in order to recruit more business. In other words, there was 'virtually' no better way (pun intended.) Sales was (and still is) a numbers game. And, the odds for success were (and still are) highly dependent upon the quantity of viable contacts initiated or established on a daily basis. That said, little compares to the value derived through in-person conversations. Simply stated, whenever I attend networking events, conferences, and most other meet-and-greet-types-of-gatherings (and I attend my fair share of all of these,) I have the opportunity – in real time – to ask questions and practice the art of 'active listening'. Without a doubt, both are conducive to business relationship success – and to the success of any relationship for that matter.

So Back To This Middle-Aged Stuff

When exactly did middle-age become a part my life? I probably should have noticed something was lurking when clerks at the checkout counter started calling me "Ma'am." Alas, I did manage to get carded the other day, however, my excitement was curtailed when the clerk said he was required to card everyone. *Sigh* Perhaps I'll go listen to some music. I always feel better when I listen to music. Now, where did I put those Frank Sinatra albums. Oh, wait – they don't call them albums anymore.

How Do You Spell "Carie" In Chinese?

This weekend, the City of Addison in North Texas hosted its annual, 3-day Taste Addison festival. And quite honestly, festival season can never arrive soon enough for me. That's because I'm a ... well, um ... somewhat of a "Festival Junkie." Ask anyone who knows me, and he or she will vouch for my self-imposed label. Today, Lorrie Semler, my friend, ActiveRain comrade, and a Keller Williams' Addison specialist, graciously invited me to join her for some tasty food, refreshing drinks, and lively entertainment.

While walking around the festival on what can only be described as a glorious, blue-sky-picture-perfect-day, we encountered Jinki Yan – a delightful Chinese artist situated under a shady tree – eagerly painting Chinese calligraphy for festival patrons. After she asked me to write "Carie" on the page of a spiral notebook, Jinki created an exquisite work of art – personalized especially for me. I must admit, I never imagined how beautiful the name Carie could be – as it is translated and illustrated in Chinese below. Plus, if you look closely, you will see an arrow pointing to a red image on the lower right side of the picture. Using a stamp to make this red impression, Jinki explained that the resulting image is a symbol of good luck. Of course, I asked her to please make sure she had plenty of red ink on that stamp of hers. Because, like most everyone, I can certainly use all the luck I can get.

The Interesting People You Meet When You Step Away From Your Computer

Sometimes I feel as though my computer and I are joined at the hip. Practically inseparable, I am frequently on my laptop computer finishing projects, developing new professional relationships – or otherwise – faithfully staying connected with established contacts. Clearly, smartphones have enabled us to function and exist with increased mobility. Nonetheless, we all need a 'break' from our seemingly endless world of technology every now and then. Oddly enough, I've met some incredible – and some unlikely – people during those well-needed 'breaks.'

Many moons ago, as I was diligently working on my 'woodburning' desktop computer, I agreed to take a break and meet a friend for dinner. To my surprise, I fortuitously shared an elevator ride and brief conversation with Barry Manilow, who was on the way to his concert. Another time, after spending what felt like an eternity staring at a computer monitor, a friend coaxed me into meeting for lunch. While at the restaurant, serendipity led me to cross paths with Donald Trump – who graciously returned my greeting as I traipsed through the lobby on my way to the Ladies' Room. Then, last week, I took an overdue break to meet a friend at Wrigley Field for an afternoon Cubs game. While sitting in the Left Field Bleachers, I caught a glimpse of a familiar gentleman signing autographs and having his picture taken. Lo and behold, there stood the Cubs owner, Tom Ricketts, mingling amongst the Left Field Bleachers fans. After racing to the top of the stands as quickly as my feet could take me there, I managed to capture this photo with my smartphone. Or, as Tom Ricketts called it, a "Selfie."

Call Me Maybe?! If only I had the opportunity to say more to Tom Ricketts than "Can I get a picture with you?" Being a lifelong, diehard, Cubs Fan, I wish I could have exchanged a few thoughts and ideas with him. You know, the kind of thoughts and ideas that only a lifelong fan and the-relatively-new-owner-of-a-baseball-franchise-that-hasn't-won-a-World-Series-in-104-years could share with each other. Meanwhile, the Cubs might certainly benefit from some positive PR – especially these days. Hey, how about this? I'm a good writer. I'm a proactive, networking extraordinaire. I'm super creative. I love sports, I love baseball, and I love the Chicago Cubs. Not to mention, I own 2 laptop computers and have tons of cool friends. Mr. Ricketts: Perhaps the Cubs Organization could use my help?

Why Home Ownership? Because Laundry Is Not Worth Losing Your Life Over

Many years ago, I frequently had visions of purchasing my own home. Why? One word: Laundry. Specifically, I looked forward to the day when I could live the American Dream while simultaneously ditching the dreaded, obligatory, rental-community laundry rooms. This morning, after tackling my fifth load of laundry, I suddenly found myself immersed in a vivid flashback – recalling the times when I regularly resided in apartments sans in-unit washers and dryers. Even today, Chicago still has its fair share of older buildings – commonly equipped with coin-operated, laundry rooms. That said, if you’ve never had the pleasure of doing your laundry in a community laundry room – consider yourself lucky.

Begging For Quarters

Nothing compares to the type of panic that sets in after you've added clothes AND soap to a commercial washer – only to discover you’re 25 cents short. Hallelujah! Gone are the days of frantically knocking on apartment doors, asking politely pleading with neighbors to make change for a dollar bill. No longer must I wait in line at the bank, grocery, or convenient store just to purchase a roll of quarters. No more searching for coins under, and in-between, sofa cushions. Back then, quarters were considered a cherished commodity – always in demand and never taken for granted. Alas, I've developed a healthier relationship with every quarter in my wallet ever since.

Alcohol & Laundry Rooms Don't Mix

When it comes to community laundry rooms – timing is everything. Once you’ve managed to procure an available washer or dryer, you'd best be present at the precise nanosecond that your clothes cycle ends. In other words, try to NEVER leave your clothes unattended. Because if you do, you won't know that someone who's been drinking adult beverages for hours is impatiently pacing back and forth – waiting to use your dryer. Case in point: Several years ago, as I was removing my clothes from a laundry room dryer – one piece at a time – an inebriated tenant informed me that I had 'exactly 30 seconds to empty the dryer completely. Or else.' Come to think of it, this was not the only time I've experienced Laundry Room Rage. Actually, I've witnessed a few heated 'expletive exchanges' and one particularly nasty fight – all resulting from laundry room shenanigans. Nope. I don't miss those days in the least.

It's 1:00 A.M. - Do You Know Where Your Laundry Is?

Clearly, more and more rental abodes are featuring in-unit washers and dryers these days. Yet, many dwellings remain washer/dryer free. In my opinion, owning a property and possessing your very own, glistening white, full-size, side-by-side, matching washer and dryer is – well, um, – total bliss. I mean, you can start your laundry and not return home for days. You can wash a load of clothes at any hour. Day or night. With or without makeup. Plus, dress code is always optional. No more worries about quarters, setting timers, or having to call 911. Yep. Good riddance to you, laundry rooms of my past! I've escaped from your clutches and I'm never going back. Never.

Ponderings From The Hospital Waiting Room

It’s 7:32 a.m., and after a quick hug and kiss, I wink to my mother as she's taken into the operating room. Thankfully, my mom’s condition is not life threatening, and although her surgery has potential risks involved, I’m confident she will come through with 'flying colors.' My mom is a tough cookie – she takes after her daughter. That said, my mother is at a point in her life where the onset of age-related health problems has become all-too-commonplace. This morning's procedure is just the latest in a series of health issues we've had to deal with over the past few years. Yet, I can’t help but wonder – when did I become old enough to have an aging, elderly parent with increasing daily needs and progressive health problems? I remember being 16-years-old like it was yesterday.

If life has taught me one important lesson, it’s this: Things can always be worse. After walking briskly down the hall to check-in with the waiting room staff, I notice that I have plenty of company. Friends and family joined together – complete strangers waiting patiently in one giant room. While seated in the waiting room, I meet a woman whose daughter was taken into surgery at approximately the same time as my mom. The daughter and two friends were visiting downtown Chicago, when the car in which they were driving was hit by a speeding taxi running a red light. The daughter’s neck was broken. Sadly, what was supposed to be a fun trip to the Big City turned into a frightening event leading to delicate neurosurgery. Talk about life changing events – the type of life changing events which literally happen in the blink of an eye. My new waiting room friend and I exchange words and prayers to comfort each other. Meanwhile, we keep each other company throughout the stressful hours ahead.

After what seems like an eternity, I see my mother's surgeon emerge from the operating room area. She notices me immediately – then proceeds to walk towards me. I take a deep breath. At first, I start to feel a bit uneasy and increasingly anxious. Then, I quickly recall what my mother is constantly telling me – especially during my most difficult moments. Think positive. Always think positive. And with that, I suddenly know in my heart that everything is going to be okay.

You Look Just Like Your Profile Photo

"Aren't you supposed to look like your profile photo?" was my response while chatting with a colleague recently. While sipping our coffees, we confessed that we both had a penchant for photo editing software, and then proceeded to share examples of our mutual photo tweaking expertise. Yet, even though we possess 'high-tech' capabilities which enable us to skillfully remove a few wrinkles here and there, we complimented each other for maintaining a profile photo which closely resembles our respective in-person likeness.

How important is a current profile photo anyway? I realize there are those who display a company logo, a family pet, a view from a window, or take-your-pick-from-among-a-wide-selection-of-other-options. Without a doubt, profiles are personal - and I certainly support whatever works best for everyone. Frankly, I prefer a 'real time,' Carie Shapiro, profile photo. A recent photo feels most comfortable to me and in fact, updating my profile photo from time to time is actually a positive thing. Because, it seems as though the little changes in life tend to exhilarate and invigorate me when I need to be exhilarated and invigorated the most. Generally speaking, embracing change - even in the form of baby steps - jumpstarts my momentum and often becomes the impetus for something greater. Plus, having a recent profile photo means your online colleagues will never walk past you at Starbucks when you finally meet face-to-face.

So, this week, I'm headed to the beauty shop for a little hairdo makeover. Nothing drastic. Probably a teensy-weensy color modification and some subtle highlights. Of course, I'll need a new shade of lipstick to go with my new hairdo. Honestly, there's nothing quite as rejuvenating as a new hairdo - and a new shade of lipstick. At some point, I will have another snapshot taken and eventually replace my current profile photo with a new profile photo. Again. For the second or third time. Afterwards, I will look exactly like my profile photo. Just the way I prefer it. And, that's just me.

Another Day. Another Scam Targeted At Real Estate Agents.

As a licensed, Illinois Real Estate Instructor, I am also a member of AIREE - Association of Illinois Real Estate Educators. Today, I received an email describing a potential scam in the making and consequently, I felt compelled to share the information with all of you.

Apparently, the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation was notified by a licensee who received a phone call from an individual claiming to represent a law firm. The caller told the licensee that her license was 'inactive,' and in order to prevent an 'alleged' lawsuit, she would need to send $3,000 to reinstate her license.

Now, I'm assuming we all know whether we're active or inactive licensees, right? Honestly, I can't envision any of us falling for a scam such as this one. That said, the IDFPR asserts they do not retain anyone to call individuals with expired or inactive licenses. Plus, I must add the obvious: When in doubt, a quick check with our local, state licensing authorities is all that's really necessary.

Sheesh! Don't these scammers have anything better to do?!

ActiveRain Will Change Your Life: The Things You Blurt Out At Meetups!

The Dallas ActiveRain Spring Meetup was held this afternoon. Lorrie Semler, our gracious hostess, planned the Meetup in conjunction with a monthly, Dallas Real Estate Networking Luncheon, organized by Bob McCranie. Besides Lorrie & Bob, other ActiveRainers in attendance included Sharon Parisi, Tom Branch, and myself. The remaining 15+ people were various real estate-related folks from around the Dallas area. Some I knew - some I didn't. Nonetheless, it sure didn't stop me from singing the praises of ActiveRain.

Bob asked everyone to stand up and make a personal introduction. When it was my turn to speak, I explained that I was an Independent Real Estate Broker and Business Trainer - then quickly jumped on the ActiveRain Express. With exuberance and enthusiasm, I shared the following sentiments:

Whoa! Did I just say that?! Yes, I believe I did. Isn't it interesting how the truth always seems to find its way out into the Universe - even when you're not trying. I mean, I hadn't planned on making that particular statement - it just burst from my lips effortlessly! Anyway, after my little schpiel, the deer-in-headlights/glazed-over-eyes peering back at me from the other sides of the table were comfortably familiar. I'm quite sure I had that exact look in my eyes when I first learned about ActiveRain. No worries. Perhaps some of the non-AR colleagues in attendance this afternoon will consider what I said. And, perhaps they won't. Either way, I know what ActiveRain means to me and that's what really matters. Oh, and one more thing: ActiveRain really has changed my life - plus the Meetups are awesome!

OMG?! Are We Really Getting That Distracted?

When I was a little girl, I used to get separated from my mom all the time while she shopped in the department store. Bored, curious, and looking for adventure, I would regularly wander off in an effort to explore areas more appealing to a child my age. Eventually, a store employee would notice me – then invariably escort me to Customer Service. Soon afterwards, I was asked for my name and age, and then a version of the following announcement was recited over the PA system. I can remember the words like it was yesterday:

Attention Please: Would the mother of Carie, 6 years old, blond hair, wearing a pink dress and patent leather shoes, please meet your daughter at Customer Service on the 3rd Floor. Thank you.

Usually, the store employees would feed me candy while I waited for my mother to arrive. Quite possibly, another attractive reason for asserting my independence. Yet, didn't everything seem so much simpler back then? Getting lost in a department store meant nothing more than a pleasant, employee-accompanied trip to Customer Service, a quick, storewide PA announcement – and candy. In other words, no real danger and a happy ending.

Could our high octane, ever-advancing, nonstop, must-be-in-touch, super-sized, sometimes mindnumbing, world of technology be partially to blame? Specifically, as most of us would agree, people seem to be continually engaged in multiple conversations and social media connections every single moment these days. We already know the dangers of driving while talking and texting. That said, are we becoming so dangerously distracted that retailers feel the need to post reminders such as this on their entrance doors? All I know is: It's a different world now. Times have certainly changed since I was a young girl – in more ways than one.

Why "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" Sometimes Requires Taking Out A Loan

I've always said that watching a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field should be on everyone's "Bucket List." Aside from Fenway Park in Boston, Wrigley Field -- nearing its 100th birthday -- is the only other "true" remaining ballpark used in the Major Leagues. Being a native Chicagoan, I've attended my fair share of Cubs games at Wrigley Field, so I can honestly tell you -- there's nothing quite like it! And especially when you're a kid, the thrill and excitement of experiencing live baseball is the kind of stuff from which great childhood memories are made. That being said, why does it have to cost a small fortune to go to a game now?

Even when I was 20 years old (approximately 9 years ago,) I could walk up to the box office on the day of the game and buy a single Bleacher ticket for under 5 bucks. Today, depending on the opponent and the day of the week, face value for Bleacher tickets can cost up to $87 each. For a Bleacher seat?! Currently, the Chicago Cubs FCI (Fan Cost Index) is in 3rd place behind the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. Translation: The average cost for a family of 4 to go to a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field is $298.20. Which begs the question: How can the average family of 4 afford to go to a baseball game these days?

It's going on 105 years since the Chicago Cubs last won a World Series (but who's counting.) As a Diehard Cubs Fan, I've often prayed to a higher power asking if the Cubs could please win a World Series in my lifetime. So far, the answer has been "No." Clearly, the Chicago Cubs have been breaking my heart for more seasons than I care to remember. However, I must say that skyrocketing ticket prices -- plus the subsequent struggle for many parents to share this memorable gameday outing with their kids -- breaks my heart too.

Here's A Branding Idea For You

Do you have a nickname? Over the years, we’ve all met people named “Skip” or “Bubba” or “Pinky” – individuals who inherit clever nicknames that seemingly follow them through life. Recently, I met one such person named "Pepper.” Answering to "Pepper" since childhood, this gentleman implied his nickname has actually become a recognizable, personal label and in fact, has served as an effective, professional branding characteristic.

Intriguing.

Afterwards, I wondered if perhaps I might need a branding nickname of my very own too. After all, branding is about developing a unique image that positively influences the mind of the consumer, right? Well, okay then – I say we give it a try.

Pepper: Good

Crash: Not So Much

The closest I’ve ever come to adopting a nickname happened during my early 20s – when I found myself involved in an unfortunate series of it-wasn’t-my-fault-type-of-fender benders. Fittingly, a few of my friends started calling me “Crash Shapiro.” At that time, an appropriate nickname for sure – yet not exactly the image I was looking for. So, what about “Boom Boom?” Definitely a nickname that denotes someone who's easygoing, upbeat, creative, animated, and a tad out-of-the-ordinary (in a good way, of course.) On the other hand, perhaps it makes me sound more like an exotic dancer than a real estate broker. Alas, a branding nickname doesn't appear to be in my immediate future – I think I'll resort to Plan B.

“Be So Good They Can’t Ignore You”

Steve Martin uttered these words during an interview when asked about his advice for up and coming performers. In my opinion, a compelling and profound sentiment representing a goal to which everyone of every profession can aspire. Besides, what is it that makes customers gravitate to, and want to do business with, certain people – and not others? Creating strong brand recognition is key for getting customers to identify with you. However, developing customer satisfaction through professionalism, expert knowledge, diligence, integrity, and an invincible attitude should ultimately contribute to ongoing success. Because the truth is: No matter how great our websites, brochures, and business cards look – our reputations are essentially the strongest and most powerful marketing tools we have on the planet. Frankly, my professional reputation is precisely what I want people to remember about me. Over and over again. I still get a kick out of the name "Boom Boom," though.

Another Bad Hair Day - Another Reason To Feel Grateful

Whatever Happened To All Of The Don't-You-Realize-How-Lucky-You-Are Adages From Our Youth?

As children, many of us were told catchy phrases or stories meant to put our childhood "predicaments" into better perspective. For example, does this sound familiar? When fussing with our food, we may have heard: "Eat! Don't you know there are starving children in location of your choice?" Or, in the midst of complaining about having to walk to school, some of us heard: "Let me tell you something: I used to walk 5 miles to school, each way, everyday, sometimes during a huge snowstorm – with no shoes on my feet!" (Okay, I never truly believed that last part.) As children, we often knew how lucky we were, because we had parents and grandparents who frequently reminded us. As adults, who reminds us now?

I've Read That People Who Enjoy Long-Term Success Have One Unique Quality In Common: Gratitude.

Most people would describe me as an upbeat, energetic, determined, sometimes animated, most times positively-charged-type-of-individual. Even so, how easy is it for any of us to get knocked down by life? And, we've all been there, right? Discouragement. Disappointment. Wading through the minutiae – trying to reach our goals as we juggle busy and stressful lives. Not to mention, perhaps a depleting 'motivational fuel tank' with the needle slowly creeping towards "Empty." We might find ourselves asking: "Could things be any worse?"

You Gotta Love Bad Hair Days.

At any given moment of any given day, we hear tales about the lives of others – profoundly impacted by unimaginable struggles, tragedy, devastation, or illness. Today, I am having a bad hair day and I couldn't be happier. Why? Because, having a bad hair day reminds me that I have a life for which I am truly grateful. If having a bad hair day is the worst thing that happens to me today, I should consider myself the luckiest girl on the planet! Don't believe me? Just stop and look around you. Sellers: I Feel Your Pain

Lately, there has been some discussion about the probable causes which may hinder the sale of a property. Specifically, the reasons why some properties seem to languish on the market in perpetuity – while others do not. On a personal level, one of these presumably, often-occurring reasons has resonated with me: Accessibility. So, with that in mind, permit me to escort you on a stroll down memory lane.

Why Can’t Someone Buy It Sight Unseen?

Several years ago, my condo was on the market. The listing was given to a seasoned and well-respected colleague – a local expert from the area in which my condo was located. Being a real estate professional myself, I already “knew the drill” about getting my place ready to show. Then suddenly, my world was nothing short of eager anticipation mixed with agonizing trepidation. Why? Because I knew strangers would soon be traipsing through my home. I knew that due to occasional erratic scheduling, I might conceivably get very little notice before certain showings. Consequently, I knew that I would likely be inconvenienced – perhaps more than once. I also knew that realistically, I needed to keep my home in a "semi-constant state of tidy” – just in case. Trust me, I was far from happy. In retrospect, however, I also knew that I had to remain mindful of the ultimate goal: Sell the property.

Besides, How Else Might A Potential Buyer Confirm That My Kitchen Appliances Were Practically Unused

Interested buyers can't see the unique and special characteristics of your home – if they can't see the unique and special characteristics of your home. In my case, it certainly didn’t hurt that I was a cooking-impaired career girl. Imagine if you will: A refrigerator filled with nothing but the obligatory 4 bottles of nail polish, a package of AA batteries, and a jar of mayonnaise – past its expiration date. Not to mention, a practically-fresh-from-the-showroom oven with the owner’s manual still attached to the inside rack. Of course, in order to successfully promote and sell a property, there are other variables involved like pricing, condition, financing – and timing. Yet, one fundamental reality typically remains: A seller is looking for a buyer and a buyer is looking for a seller. Plus, here's the biggie: the quicker a property sells – the less showings you have to endure. And, THAT my seller friends – is the icing on the cake.

Don’t Tell Me Anything You Don’t Want Me To Remember

I have a great memory. I can remember phone numbers of friends and relatives from when I was a young girl. I know my driver’s license and credit card numbers by heart. I can recite dialogue from an episode of a favorite television show that I haven’t seen in years. More importantly, however, I rarely forget what someone tells me.

Perhaps It’s A Gender Thing

Guys, you know what I’m talking about. In fact, I’m fairly certain that most men who’ve ever been in a committed relationship with a woman can relate to the not-so-little-secret I am about to share. Ready? Here it is: We women have the uncanny ability to remember every single detail a man has ever uttered to us during the course of any conversation. A conversation that could have taken place anywhere. Any time. In any decade. Follow me – I’ll illustrate:

Him: Nope.

Carie: C’mon – yes you do! Don’t you remember? We were standing in the lobby during intermission at that play we went to about 2 ½ years ago. You said blah, blah, blah about this? Then you said blah, blah, blah about that? Surely you remember, don’t you?

Him: Nope.

All Kidding Aside

No matter how good my memory may be, when it comes to anything business related – I document everything. Including conversations. Personally, I am not a huge fan of unnecessary drama, dissension or complications. As we all know, misunderstandings can potentially lead to mutual heartbreak. Rather, I would prefer to do my best to maintain a comprehensive communications trail for future reference. Keeping lists has also become one of my tried-and-true hallmarks. In my opinion, good documentation not only keeps me organized – it has the ability to quickly and effortlessly refresh the memories of everyone involved.

And, just for the record – I do remember what you said.

Need To Do More Networking? There's A Volunteer Opportunity For That!

My name is Carie and I am a serial volunteer. The truth is, I’ve always had a penchant for volunteer work. Organizing events for Teens Against Dystrophy as a young girl. Spending hours every Sunday reading to, and visiting with, residents at a nearby nursing home during high school. Assisting on a weekly basis in the ICU Waiting Room at a local hospital as a 20-something adult. Not to mention the countless fundraising and charity events along the way. Honestly, it would be nearly impossible to recall each and every activity for which I have volunteered throughout my lifetime. Yet, oddly enough, never did I realize my affinity for volunteer work might one day translate into a strategic and integral portion of my professional life. That is – until now.

Whether you find yourself overflowing with business, going through a transition, or somewhere in-between – volunteering is nothing short of "Win/Win." As I travel the winding roads of reinvention myself, I recognize that volunteering for business-related entities is an effective way to expand and enhance my professional horizons. For example, I currently serve on a special events committee for a local association chapter, maintain the website for a local nonprofit organization, and regularly assist with social media workshops sponsored by a local, not-for-profit, employment resource center. Not surprisingly, there are seemingly endless associations and organizations from which to choose. But, here's the best part: When people see you on a regular basis – connections are created based on familiarity and trust. And, in my opinion, the most meaningful connections – personal or professional – are primarily based on familiarity and trust.

Will I still serve holiday meals to homeless veterans, sort donated groceries at the food bank, or otherwise raise my hand in times of need? Absolutely. Volunteering is certainly a selfless and compassionate way to assist those who are less fortunate. However, volunteer endeavors need not be approached solely from this perspective. Rather, volunteering is an exceptional way to build significant professional relationships. And these relationships are, as we all know, crucial to our professional well-being. The late, great, incomparable Zig Ziglar famously quoted: "You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want." Sounds good to me. Meanwhile, one of my good friends thinks I volunteer too much. Fair enough. Even so, I'll continue to sign up for stuff – because that's just who I am.

You Don't Look Like A Real Estate Broker?!

Recently, while engaged in conversation with a taxi driver, I was asked the obligatory question, “What do you do?” “I’m a real estate broker,” I answered. “Wow, you don’t look like a real estate broker,” he replied. "Hmmm, what exactly does a real estate broker look like?” I asked. “I don’t know – I just wouldn’t have guessed that you were a real estate broker,” the driver said. Finally, feeling neither flattered nor insulted by the driver’s viewpoint, we continued our discussion until we reached my destination. And yet, although I'm quite confident the taxi driver's comments were harmless in nature, I couldn't help but wonder about the power of misconception.

Personally, I can remember a few occasions when I was judged solely based on incidental traits or personal attributes. In retrospect, I believe I was inaccurately assessed by individuals who knew absolutely nothing about me. The truth is, we are all judged at one time or another – encountering those individuals who've developed preconceived opinions based upon our age, our religion, our height and weight, our hair color, our profession – whatever. In fact, being a far-from-perfect-person myself, I too have been guilty of “judging a book by its cover.” Not surprisingly, though, I typically have discovered that my judgments were unsubstantiated and flawed. Which begs the question: Is judging people an inevitable and unavoidable common case of human nature?

We all have a story – and I’m pretty sure most people would be shocked to hear mine. Suffice it to say, I have endured and survived my fair share of trauma and adversity during the course of my lifetime. I don’t talk about it much. I don’t blog about it at all. Besides, I am frequently reminded that I have plenty of company. Yet, there is one significant point of which I am positively certain: Labels and external characteristics do not define who I am. So, other than forming the opinion that I look fabulous for my age (a sentiment I will gladly accept all day long,) here is my plea: Get to know me first. Within a professional context, allow me to prove what I know and what I can do. Let me show you why you should invest your time in me. Permit me to demonstrate how my experience, talent, and expertise will benefit you – and how knowing me will undoubtedly change your life for the better. Simply stated, please give me chance. Then you can judge me.

Some people are so easy to deal with. You know the ones. Those blissfully, laid-back clients who make life worth living – or at the very least – make it a pleasure to get out of bed in the morning. They're straightforward, goal-oriented, realistic, and they tackle their mission with thoughtfulness, no major drama – and a healthy dose of humor. Remind you of anyone? Take a moment – I’ll wait.

Many of us spend a fair amount of time chatting about the trials and tribulations of entrepreneurship. Without a doubt, there will always be pitfalls – not to mention the obligatory scars we earn while attempting to develop and maintain a lucrative, professional business. Will we sometimes feel frustrated over less-than-stellar clients with unreasonable expectations? Yes. Will we sometimes endure excruciatingly painful situations over which we seem to have very little control? Yes. However, despite those isolated instances, I would venture to guess – we probably have our share of tremendous relationships too.

Who was your dreamiest client? Surely, we all have a few laudable clients who we remember with affection and fondness. The client who unknowingly kept us sane. The client who patently, yet seemingly effortlessly, kept us smiling. The client who, at times, gave us the strength to make it through another day. In my opinion, acknowledgement and appreciation of the positives – make the negatives that much more bearable. Don't you think?

REAL ESTATE HAS A CASTING COUCH?!

The year was 1987. I had just completed my Real Estate Salesperson’s Exam – a pre-computerized, licensing exam involving a sheet of paper, a No. 2 pencil, and a 6-8 week waiting period. At that time, I knew very few people working in the real estate business. So, after receiving my passing notification in the mail, I picked up the phone book (link provided for those under the age of 25) and I started making telephone calls. My interest and primary focus was in the male-dominated, commercial and industrial real estate niche. Consequently, I sought to connect with a broker willing to give a young, inexperienced, female rookie some much needed guidance.

I Don't Think So.

After a brief search, I found a male broker who agreed to get together and talk further about joining his company. Arriving for our meeting early and eager, I was nervous – yet I felt enthusiastically confident that I would leave with a new job. I was wrong. Instead, after attempting to make a great impression by carefully and thoughtfully articulating my qualifications and capabilities, I heard the following response: “Such big words from such a little girl. Why don’t we continue this conversation over a drink?” Realizing I wasn't being taken seriously, but wanting to prove I was tougher than I looked, I managed to keep my composure during the remaining awkward moments – until I politely thanked him for his time and said 'goodbye.' Afterwards, feeling somewhat discouraged, I returned home with no job prospects, a bruised ego, and the vision of my phonebook – on a desk across the room – once again calling my name.

We’ve Come A Long Way, Baby!

Of course, the dynamics of our business world have changed tremendously since 1987. In this day and age, many industries which were formerly considered ‘male-dominated’ are now overflowing with bright, independent, vibrant, accomplished, and empowered women. So, what happened after my initial encounter with that creepy guy masquerading as an upstanding, business professional – albeit equipped with a dysfunctional, moral compass? Luckily, he was the exception and not the rule. After a second painstaking search, I eventually connected with another male broker who subsequently became my first real estate mentor. A kind and decent older gentleman who respected me – and who acknowledged and honored my intelligence and sincere desire to excel in a lucrative, real estate field. Not only did he generously provide me with a desk and a phone – he was characteristically committed to bolstering the confidence and performance of each and every agent in his office. In short, he was a true gem.

You Never Forget Your First Business Mentor

Last week, I discovered that unbeknownst to me, my first real estate mentor had passed away a few years ago. As I reflect back upon our relationship, I feel humbly grateful and appreciative for his willingness to give me a chance when I really needed one. He unselfishly shared his time, his invaluable knowledge, and his boundless encouragement and support. The truth is, I believe a good mentor is an indispensible component to fostering success. Oddly enough, it seems even more ironic that I should hear this news now – when my current quest for a new business mentor is stronger than ever before.

It's Not Like I'm Getting A Tattoo

Perhaps you embarked upon 2012 – primed with soaring aspirations, lofty goals, and growing momentum. Super-sized, high-octane adrenalin kept you on track and moving forward throughout the year. Yet, despite all the hard work, long hours, and persistent triumphs over life’s inevitable hurdles and obstacles – you feel as though some of your efforts have been vanquished. As I establish and cultivate strategies to be implemented in 2013, I recognize and embrace my past successes – and honor my failures valuable learning experiences. Also, my self-reflective process always brings to mind one philosophy I adopted many years ago. This philosophy applies equally to both personal and professional development, and at the risk of sounding too oversimplified, here it is: Whenever I enter unchartered territory or attempt something new, I tell myself the following: It’s not like I’m getting a tattoo. If my choices don’t produce desired results or I change my mind – I can stop. In fact, I can typically reverse my decisions painlessly, and then proceed to select different tactics or approaches. After all, trying something new is an essential component for any significant growth process – a process which will invariably generate unexpected lessons anyway. Alas, I am confident that trying will, at the very least, lead to a path of success more often than not trying at all. And, of that – I have all the proof I need.

Wouldn’t we all love to own a crystal ball – something to tell us precisely what to do and when to do it? Something which emphatically assures us that which will show the greatest returns on our investments? Of course, we may ask our colleagues and friends for encouragement and sound advice regarding the best marketing, advertising, networking, blogging, or lead generation techniques. Nevertheless, over the years I have been repeatedly awakened to the following realization: The only person who can truly evaluate what works best for me – is me. What works for one may not necessarily work for another. So, if I accept the attitude that few choices are irreversible or become permanent barriers to potential opportunities, I may find myself a little discouraged at times. But, I never feel defeated.

I Thought You Said You Had A Website

For the second time in a month, someone has handed me a business card displaying a non-existent website. Or, so it seems. Okay, I’m not talking about a website that is experiencing temporary server issues. Nor, do I mean a website with isolated, internal pages still under construction. I am referring to a website, where once you've entered the web address into the address box – you are directed to a domain name registrar page asking if you would like to ‘own’ that particular domain name. Huh?!?

Did You Forget To Pay Your Bill?

What’s happening here? After meeting you in person, you and your business have piqued my curiosity. You handed me your business card and I promptly looked you up the next day.  So, what's going on? Did you change your mind about having a website? Did you ever have a website in the first place? I never know what to think when something like this happens. Clearly, I'm not having positive thoughts and instead – I am thinking about heading over to the website address listed on the subsequent business card in my stack.

Links To Nowhere

Since we're on the subject, I must admit that the same frustration goes for broken links. You see, I love to click on links. In fact, you might even call me a 'Clicker.' Surely, you've placed links on your website for a reason.  And, I’m also assuming you want me to click on them, right? Yet, when I click on your links – nothing good happens. In other words, I've clicked on links that take me either to error pages, or to 'this page no longer exists' pages. Essentially, it is another online situation that will probably lead me to someone else's website – lickety split.

Pardon Me While I Check My Own Stuff

These recent business card experiences have reminded me that from time to time – I probably need to check my own stuff too! Do you ever go back and check on your website address and/or website links? Honestly, I don't think about doing it often enough – and it makes perfect sense. I certainly don’t want anyone to leave my website due to non-working stuff. After all, I've taken great strides to get people to notice me – and to invite people to do business with me.  Why would I want to easily drive them away?

When Kerrie announced it was ActiveRain Winter MeetUp time again – I was psyched. Over the past year, I’ve been to a few Texas ActiveRain MeetUps, however, I was scheduled to be in the Chicago area this time around. Bummed out that I would not be able to attend a Texas ActiveRain MeetUp, I thought to myself, "What the heck, I’ll just host one in Chicago." And that's how the "Big D/Windy City" ActiveRain MeetUp was born.

MeetUp location was L. Woods Tap & Pine Lodge in Lincolnwood – A Lettuce Entertain You Restaurant which has been an exceedingly popular, local mainstay for years. L. Woods always offers good food in a fun, comfortable atmosphere – and this time was no different!

By the way, since I was traveling from Dallas to Chicago, I certainly didn't want to forget to bring a bit of Texas to share with the rest of the group. So, ladies and gentlemen, presenting 'The Honorary Cowboys and Cowgirls of ActiveRain' ....

Blogging Can Be Intimidating

Especially for blogging novices. Each week, I meet lots of ‘blogger wannabes’ who are intrigued by, yet fearful of, venturing off into unchartered, blogging territory. Since I can talk about the ‘Joys of Blogging’ all day long, I am always eager to enlighten others in their quest to learn more. So, whenever I am asked for blogging advice – I always make a referral to ActiveRain.

“How Much of My Private Life Will I Have to Share?”

Recently, I received an email message from a colleague expressing some concern over blog content. After spending a fair amount of time perusing various ActiveRain blog posts, my colleague asked whether the inclusion of personal details is a necessary blogging component. The short answer is: No. Of course, ActiveRain has an awesome variety of blog posts. And sure, some blog posts are deeply personal – others are not. The truth is: Blogging styles are unique and individualistic – and everyone has a different comfort level.

Clearly, I’m No Shrinking Violet

Although I would describe my writing as self-deprecating at times, I don't have a propensity for extremely personal narratives. That doesn't mean that I don't write from my heart and with the utmost sincerity. I do. Hopefully, my personality and persona are reflected in the words I choose. What has truly helped me the most is the following advice I adopted long ago:

Blogs are like snowflakes – each one distinct in its own way. And, that’s the beauty of blogging. Blogging looks and feels differently to everyone. Blogging allows others to get to know you – yet you can share as much about yourself as you like. Naturally, people connect with others for all sorts of reasons. Find your own groove. Just remember – whatever feels right to you is okay. Really.

Can't I Just Email You A Handwritten Note?

Who doesn’t love receiving a handwritten note or card?

Whether it's for a birthday, or a 'thank you' for a gift or job well done, I try to send out handwritten notes and cards whenever I can. There's something about using a real pen, with real ink, and signing a card or note with a real signature. Besides, I guess I'm just an old-fashioned gal about certain things. So, why is the art of handwritten notes in danger of going out of style for good?

Recently, I read about the current debate over the possible widespread elimination of cursive handwriting classes.

Viewed as antiquated and past its prime, the fate of cursive handwriting classes is up for grabs. Although a few states have either preserved the classes as a requirement or designated them as optional, a majority of states are contemplating the removal of these classes from prospective 2014 national education curriculum guidelines.

Hooray! A job for Senior Citizens that doesn't require greeting customers at the door while wearing a bright orange vest.

Cursive Handwriting Interpreter. Hey, necessity is the mother of invention and this could conceivably become a viable job title of the future! Think about it. Years from now, someone goes up into the attic and finds a box of old letters written by family members from earlier generations? Or, someone visits a museum and glances through the protective glass at historically significant documents created by our forefathers with a quill pen and inkwell. Rent-A-Cursive-Handwriting-Interpreter-Franchise anyone?

The truth is: Block letters make my thank you notes look more like ransom notes.

Honestly, I don't feel comfortable writing personal notes in all block letters. Something seems inherently wrong and quite frankly, my personal notes appear to look more like something right out of a CSI episode. Don't get me wrong - I embrace technology just as much as the next girl. But, you certainly wouldn't send an email in all block letters either, would you?

Proponents for the abolishment of cursive handwriting classes suggest that the only practical reason to learn cursive handwriting is to create a unique signature.

Seriously? Wiping out cursive handwriting education except for the purpose of signature building? Everyone knows that an "X" is a perfectly legal signature in most cases anyway. Why bother?

What Does It Take To Accomplish Your Goals? Ask A Chinese Bamboo Plant

Are you frustrated – patiently waiting for all your hard work to finally pay off?

Day after day, many of us tirelessly pursue our personal and professional goals. We eagerly strive to gain some momentum and yet – often times, we begin to feel like we're not making any progress at all. Soon, we might fear we'll never reach our objectives and then sadly – we may even contemplate giving up. Well, the next time you think you're doing nothing more than spinning your wheels – think about this instead.

A Chinese Bamboo Plant: The Formative Years.

If there was ever a CliffsNotes version recapping the first 5 years of a Chinese Bamboo Plant's life – this could be it. Keep in mind, once the seeds have been planted, farmers consistently and faithfully water, fertilize, and nurture the tiny seedlings throughout.

Year Number 1: No Visible Results.

Year Number 2: No Visible Results.

Year Number 3: No Visible Results.

Year Number 4: No Visible Results.

Year Number 5: Typically, in about 6 weeks, the Chinese Bamboo Plant will soar approximately 10 stories high!

I know what you're thinking. Okay, Carie – If I ever get the Chinese Bamboo Plant question while playing Trivial Pursuit – I'm good to go! Otherwise, what does this have to do with me?

Naturally, you might believe there is nothing going on for the first 5 years, right? Au contraire. During that entire time, a strong and vast network of roots is developing beneath the earth's surface. Consequently, these solid and sturdy roots will serve as a foundation capable of supporting the Chinese Bamboo Plant – especially during it's boundless, breakthrough moment. Which serves to prove the point that just because we don't see immediate results – doesn't necessarily mean there is no growth happening.

So, what is the moral of the story?

Substantial goals and instant gratification rarely go hand-in-hand. Patience, persistence, and perseverance are often decisive elements for attaining success. Remember, if the farmer ever stops watering, fertilizing, and nurturing the tiny seedlings at any time – the Chinese Bamboo Plants cannot survive. The truth is, seeing the 'fruits of our labor' often takes the same amount of loyalty and commitment. Each step we take, each relationship we build, every new strategy we implement – all manage to intricately form the basis of our future achievements.

Did you know it takes an average of 2-3 years to grow a single pineapple?

Just sayin'.

Are there times when you would prefer an old-fashioned, telephone conversation over a steady stream of text messages?

Back when I first began text messaging, one of my girlfriends informed me that my text messaging skills left much to be desired. Simply stated, my friend is a prolific, text messaging whiz. Me – not so much. Luckily, my friend and I have been great buddies since we were young girls. And, when you’ve been good friends with someone for over 40 years, you tend to accept and love each other unconditionally – even if one friend uses up a majority of the other friend's monthly allotment of text messages.

Text Messages Gone Wild

The truth is, I've never mastered the art of text messaging jargon and quite frankly, I've never actually tried. Writing in "text-eze" simply feels awkward and unnatural to me. What can I say? Clearly, I embrace other methods of modern technology. Even so, creating abbreviated text messages, for some reason, has never been one of my strong suits. Of course, I don't mean quick, spur of the moment, hey-I'm-looking-for-a-parking-space-I'll-be-right-there-kind-of-messages. I mean conversations with lots and lots of details. And, many of my conversations fit into that category.

With voice recognition text messaging software on my smartphone, texting like I talk is now easier than ever before!

Best. Invention. Ever. With the ability to dictate text messages, I can text like I talk with the greatest of ease. Consequently, whenever I text like I talk about something complicated, I will typically receive a telephone call within the first 2 to 3 text messages. Certainly, in my case, a telephone conversation could be significantly less labor intensive than texting. Also, in my opinion, telephone conversations are less prone to misinterpretation. Besides, I don’t care to send – or receive – long, drawn-out text messages about convoluted business or personal matters anyway.

Not to mention the fact that I'm fairly confident I am responsible for at least one enrollment in an unlimited text messaging plan.

So, if you’d rather have a chat with someone on the telephone versus the back and forth, tedious, seemingly never ending, many times cryptic and frustrating text messages – try texting like you talk. Chances are you’ll get a call quicker than you can type “Thx.”
