In my tribute to love this week I knew I just had to give props to the long forgotten 'note in my locker'. Whether they were from a best friend or from the cute cellist that sat a few seats over, they were wonderful. Now that cell phones and email are so prevalent I got to wondering if the note in my locker had gone the way of the dinosaur. As my friends know I am a lover of the personal note and I was thrilled to find out that junior high crushes are still blossoming through locker notes. I have included some of the links that I found most amusing.
So lets all take time to remember the act of slipping a note through the vents of that special person's locker, first kisses in a band hall practice room, little notes passed in class, praying/hoping to be asked to the dance, and our first forays in love.
With January already behind us, I thought I would review one of the coolest things I have done this year.
Jay (my husband) and I decided on a whim to go to Vancouver BC for the New Years. While we were driving around on New Year’s Day looking for a place to eat, we drove by a beach and saw a sign for their 90th annual Polar Bear Swim and thought… “what the heck”. Actually Jay thought I would weenie out after a very long walk in the rain without an umbrella to get the info about the swim but he was wrong. Since he is always willing to humor my insane request he said that he was going to swim with me and I am sure he knew that I would totally rub this accomplishment in his face if he didn’t do it. We ran back to the hotel to grab our swimsuits then went to a restaurant near the beach to wait the hour until the plunge. The place we ate at was a zoo with half dressed drunk people, singing with funny accents and having a great time. We went to the water about 10 minutes before the swim and we had made all the proper arrangements. All our goods were packed in a garbage bag as was explained to us by the 20 year Polar Bear veteran we met at the bar. When we got down to the water we lost one of our two umbrellas to a very intoxicated swimmer. At this point I just gave in and stripped off my robe and we sat in the 34 degree rain for the next 8 minutes freezing our butts off. I do want to go on record and mention that Jay kept his umbrella over him and did not strip his robe off until the last possible second. Within about a minute of the rope dropping, which signals the start of the swim, the crowd of approximately 2,000 people became very compact and very loud. These Canucks were going crazy! When the rope dropped Jay and I ran and threw our trash bag under the registration table and then took about 5 big steps into the nearly frozen water and dove in. It was definitely the coldest water that I have ever been in but the thrill and effect that it had on me was pretty cool. It was like a whole new beginning and an incredible way to start the New Year. The trip and the swim gave me a nice break and allowed Jay and I to clear our heads and get on track for an incredible 2010.
All of the ladies that work in the office do so much behind the scenes to make everyone's life so much simpler and it was our turn to give back. All of us at the "annex" (the building separate from main office) got together to take the office ladies out for a day of relaxation. Pedicures on us! I thought I'd share the fun with everyone. Happy Holidays!
There just happens to be a WONDERFUL place called Spa Pedicures just around the corner, so we rounded the ladies up and walked on over.
Our official group photo.
Which color should I choose?
A hard day at the office. I pretty much love the look on Celissa's face (the one in green). She looks...happy! Hooray foot rubs!
It truly was a grueling day at work. Some just couldn't keep up with the exhausting pace. Hey, we work hard around here.
Of course, it just wouldn't be complete without a manicure! Whew, I'm beat! Taking care of yourself is such hard work!
We all got together last week and took a team photo. It actually has been FOREVER since we have taken a team photo, so it was long overdue. We thought it would be a good opportunity to make Christmas cards as well. Say hello to the Real Estate by Design Group...and the tree in the Keller Williams Denton foyer.
Happy Holidays! I hope everyone has a wonderful time celebrating whatever it is you celebrate.
I’ve been searching for a good topic for my first “me” blog and it came to me in an unexpected way. A few weeks ago, I was discussing the handshake when I realized that I’m not a hand shaker; I’m just not a fan of the hand shake for some reason. Now, this doesn’t make me a freak, a weirdo, or unprofessional in any way. I’ll do it if the situation calls for it, but what I’ve come to realize is that I’m a hugger. I’m a “real estate hugger” and I much prefer a hug to a handshake any day. So, it may be a little unconventional, but I think it’s the PERFECT topic for my first “me” blog, a blog about me, instead of about real estate or communities or whatnot. Being the thorough researcher that I am, I spent a bit of time investigating “the real estate hug.” First, I googled “real estate hug” and was bummed to see that the only things that came up were a handful of people with the last name, “Hug.” Pretty cool and all, but not exactly what I was going for. Next, I found my way to a few different websites on hugs in general. Again, there was nothing about any real estate related hugging. So here I am, blazing yet another new trail in the field of real estate! I am going to talk about the top three real estate hugs I use in my everyday real estate transactions, be they traditional, relocation, or REO. I’ll also tell you how I integrate them into my day and hopefully, if you’re a lover of the hug like me, you can add to my work! Here they are:
1. The Friendly Hug – This is also sometimes referred to as the “introduction hug.” It starts by you putting your arms lightly around the hugee’s (the one on the receiving end of your hug) shoulders and giving a gentle squeeze. The most important part of this hug is the timing; you should hug from 1-2 seconds. Any shorter is just awkward and any longer is reserved for those you know a little better. This is my introductory hug, the entry level hug, the “hi, nice to meet you, how are you doing” hug. This is the hug I use in place of the introductory handshake. If you are a little uncomfortable about skipping the handshake and going straight to the hug, try doing the handshake first and then using that firm grip to pull them in for a quick hug. I use this when I meet a client for the first time at REO mixers or, heck, whenever I can squeeze one in.
2. The Back Tapping Hug – This hug is reserved for inspiration. It’s a friendly hug, but with a little more oomph. It is a little tighter than the friendly hug mentioned above and should involve at least 1-3 pats on the back, whilst in mid hug. I’ve determined that the number of pats is in indirect relation to masculinity; women give many more pats than men do. This is one of my favorite hugs to be on the receiving end of because they really can make your day. It can mean a plethora of things including: I’m thinking about you, you are fantastic, I hope you feel better, or you just look like you need a hug to make it through the day. This hug holds some power, so use it often to lift the spirits of others.
3. The Overjoyed, Jumping Up and Down Hug – This is a hug that involves jumping, squealing, patting, screaming, laughing, giggling, and all other sorts of general bouts of happiness. There is absolutely no time limit to this hug and actually, you feel sucked back into it for at least one more fit, because it’s just that good. Here are a few examples of when to use this hug: a friend just helped you get a huge REO client, you’re at the title company and just closed a 3.5 million dollar apartment complex that you have worked on for the last 6 months, you just hit your cap and your team leader or MCA walks by. This is the Elaine Benes from Seinfeld “GET OUT” in hug form. This is my all time favorite hug and I consider it the signature move of the real estate/facebook diva that I am. Every time I try and put this hug into words, I always fall short, because there is just so much emotion that goes along with it. It is my goal in life to do a lot more of this kind of hugging, because that means good things are happening and basking is sure to follow.
These are by no means all of the hugs you can incorporate into your everyday real estate dealings, but hopefully it is a good start. Below are some funny links that I’ve come across in all of my hug research. WOW!! I feel spent! It’s 11:41pm and there is no one around to give a back tapping completion hug to.
I hope you enjoy your day and let the Real Estate Hugging begin!
This is actually a re-blog. I am new to active rain so not sure if that will be spelled out but wanted to give credit to the actual writer. As everyone knows I am a social media junkie and this has some pretty cool features. In between soccer games, airport pick ups, and bday parties I will try to locate an invitation to google wave so I don't have google wave envy for the next few months. Have a happy weekend!!!
I was just reading through some random blogs and discovered that Google has just taken email to yet another entirely new level and they call it "The Wave".
I found a video that pretty much breaks it down to look at and give a fairly clear overview of the new system. It actually is like a social media on steroids - maybe this is what web 3.0 will be like?
What I also found out is that Google only sent out 100,000 invitations to use the new service with no announcement of when it will be rolled out on a larger scale,,,my guess is not too long, certainly I would think it would be fairly common by the end of the year...but who knows with Google...
If you want to be one of the earlier innovators toe get your own WAVE Account, my understanding is they are currently selling for about $90 an account, on eBay, with some of the first going for as much as $300 on eBay. Google has always made it's tools available for free - like Gmail, it is only those who feel like they "need it now" will pay for it.
So check out the video and tell me if you'd pay $90 for this and have your own wave, right now...
I was out driving on the north side of Denton, Texas and I've always loved the neighborhood around Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. It features homes with large lots and tons of mature trees. It is a family oriented neighborhood with multiple parks, playgrounds, tennis courts, creeks, bike/jogging paths, soccer fields, basketball courts, and more. My favorite thing about this area is there is a home to fit any family's budget; homes on the outskirts of the neighborhood are a bit more affordable and as you get closer to the parks, the prices go up. Another great thing about this area is that all of the homes are established and stable, you don't have new construction going up around you. Most of the residents have lived in the neighborhood for a long time; this is a part of town that people just fall in love with the area and don't want to leave. It is very conveniently located close to Texas Woman's University and the historic downtown square.
Here are some pictures that I took as I was going around the neighborhood:
As you can see, it really is a great neighboorhood. Now a little more about the top rated school, Woodrow Wilson Elementary. Here is a list of their achievments:
Denton’s only five time Exemplary Campus, Recognized Campus 2003-04 and TEA Gold Awards in Math, Writing, and Science. Recognized Campus 2004-05 and TEA Gold Awards in Attendance, Writing, and Science, Recognized Campus 2005-06, Just for the Kids 2004 Honor Roll, Rated as one of the Top 100 Public Schools by Dallas Magazine-2004, 2003-04 TMEA Elementary Honor Choir (second time)
Pretty impressive, huh? Feel free to visit the school's website for more information.

It is a great time to buy a house, but with all of the homes for sale here in Denton, Texas, which part of town, which neighborhood is the best fit for you and your family? With this article, my hope is to give you some highlights of the different areas of town to help you make your decision.
I went back and forth as to how to put this blog together and figured the best way was to just give you the bare bones of each neighborhood. I'll be writing further blogs with much more specific information about each area and I'll link them back to this blog once I've written them for your further research. If you'd like more information before I get the next few blogs done, please contact me and I'll be happy to help you. Here are some wonderful neighborhoods with houses for sale right here in Denton, Texas, along with some gems not many folks know about:
Established neighborhoods: These are neighborhoods here in Denton, Texas with older homes for sale. The area has established trees and a well-known name around town to go with them.
Southridge - As the name suggests, Southridge is on the south side of town. Started in the 1960's, this is a custom-built community with houses varying in size and architecture. The lots average 1/3 acre and have tons of mature trees. This is a very friendly neighborhood conveniently located near I-35. Homes in this neighborhood range from the $160's to the $330's.
Forrestridge - This neighborhood is on the other side of Teasley Lane from Southridge. This neighborhood is very similar to Southridge, but the homes in Forrestridge are newer and there is some very interesting architecture and intriguing floor plans in this neighborhood. Homes in this neighborhood range from the $200's to the $470's.
Montecito - Montecito is located on the other side of South Lakes Park from Southridge. This neighborhood was established in the early 1970's with big houses usually set on an acre or more. Of course, there have been newer additions with smaller lots, but this neighborhood remains one of the most beautiful in Denton with its numerous trees and grand houses. Homes in Montecito average in the high $390's plus.
Downtown Historic District - These are homes that line Hickory and Oak from Carroll to Welch. Most of them were built in the early 1900's and have been beautifully restored and proudly bare their historical markers. These are all HUGE houses that offer the charm of the Victorian age with the conveniences and amenities of today. They are priced around $500,000 in restored condition.
New Neighborhoods: This section will feature newer neighborhoods here in Denton, Texas, all which have homes for sale:
Wind River - This is a newer addition on the south side of Denton. It is located near Teasley Lane and Lillian Miller Parkway. Houses in Wind River average from $130s to $220s. The community features pool, lakes and walking paths.
Sundown Ranch - Sundown Ranch is a very sought after neighborhood in Denton. It is located near Wind River and offers newer homes with a price point of $140s to $ 230s. This very family-friendly community offers pool, large clubhouse, several tennis and basketball courts and a small lake with walking path.
Ellison Park - This is a small gated community located off of Teasley Lane right across from Sam Houston Elementary School. Started in the late 1990's, this community features homes around $200,000.
Lakeview Ranch - Located off of Highway 380 on the east side of town, Lakeview Ranch is a community offering big houses with a country-like atmosphere. All of the homes in this neighborhood sit on at least an acre and range in price from the $200's to the $500's.
Tuscan Hills - These are all homes that overlook Unicorn Lake and are built with top notch energy efficient design on garden lots. Renowned builder Kent Key custom builds all of these homes. I have heard many people refer to it as an "Italian Oasis." Homes in this wonderful neighborhood range from the 490's to the 630's.
Near the University of North Texas: Denton is well known for its two universities, the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University. There are a couple "gem" neighborhoods that are close to UNT and perfect for professors and other professionals that work at the University of North Texas, who might be looking for homes for sale in that part of Denton, Texas.
Tremont - Tremont is a very small, custom community located across the highway from the university off of North Texas Boulevard. It features large homes on smaller lots in the $220's plus.
Highland Park Circle - This is a small, quiet, mostly forgotten road near Tremont that offers some absolutely charming houses. You can almost see the university from here, but for some reason, people over look its splendor. Homes here are averaging $160s to $180's.
Hopefully this guide will help you in your search for homes here in beautiful and charming Denton. Being raised here, I consider myself an expert in the area and take pride in the community and all that it has to offer. From the small town feel of the Old Town Square to the fast paced lifestyle of the universities, Denton has something for everyone! Please remember me and my team if you are searching for homes for sale in Denton, Texas and feel free to visit my website for more information.
My hope is to provide a small bit of helpful information about the community of Highland Village, Texas as well as highlight the wonderful lakefront homes it has to offer.
Highland Village, Texas was formally made into a city in the early 1960's, so it hasn't been around too entirely long. Interestingly enough, it started as a small community of people that were drawn there to build their homes right on the lakefront, being that the city is located halfway between Denton and Dallas on the south side of Lake Lewisville. According to Wikipedia, in the last 20 years, people have begun to flock to the area and the city has had to react. Being that it is primarily a residential area, again, founded by people eager to build lakefront homes (and the desire of residents to keep the city a quiet refuge from the nearby big cities haven't changed much in the last 40 or so years), the city's first response was to beef up the school system. Children from homes in Highland Village attend schools within Lewisville ISD and this once small lakefront community takes a great deal of pride in the fact that they send their kids to blue ribbon (exemplary) schools. The city also hosts many wonderful and family friendly events to bring the community together including: the Highland Village Balloon Festival, Highland Village Days, Hogwarts Festival at Kids Kastle, and Fall Festival. For more information please visit the official city website.
The city has also constructed a City Trail for bicyclists, joggers, and walkers to access all parts of Highland village, be they schools, retail centers, parks or city offices. It really is a feature that too many cities lack and the good folks of Highland Village have made it easy for their residents to visit the lakefront. Here is a map of the City Trail:
Lastly, I'd just like to share a beautiful shot of a remote part of Lake Lewisville that is within Highland Village and let you fantasize living in such a beautiful place:
If you'd like more information about life in Highland Village, Texas or the stunning lakefront homes it has to offer, please call me or visit my website; I'd love to help you find your dream home!
